The Cowee–West's Mill Historic District encompasses an area of Macon County, North Carolina, which has historic significance predating the arrival of European settlers, and extending into the 20th century. It is located about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Franklin, the county seat, along either side of Cowee Creek as it flows toward the Little Tennessee River. The district includes the archaeological site and platform mound of the Cherokee town of Cowee, a major settlement until the time of the American Revolutionary War. In the first half of the 19th century the area was developed as a mining community centered on a mill operated by the West family, and after the American Civil War it became one of a small number of rural African-American communities in western North Carolina. The core of the West's Mill area is centered on the junctions of SR 1350, SR 1341, SR 1340, and West's Mill Road, and North Carolina Route 28 is the major road passing through the district. Its northern and southern bounds are roughly where the valley floor gives way to hills on either side of Cowee Creek, ending in the west at Hall Mountain and in the east at the mouth of Caler Creek.

Owned by the Macon County Airport Authority, it is located three nautical miles (6 km) northwest of central business district of Franklin, North Carolina, in the Iotla Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains. This airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, which categorized it as a general aviation facility.

Lauada is an unincorporated community in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. Lauada is located at the junction of U.S. Route 19, U.S. Route 74, and North Carolina Highway 28 5.1 miles (8.2 km) southwest of Bryson City. The SCC Swain Center, a satellite location of Southwestern Community College, is located here.

The Franklin Terrace Hotel is a historic hotel at 67 Harrison Avenue in Franklin, North Carolina. The two story stuccoed-brick building was built in 1888, originally to serve as a girls boarding school. In 1902 it began serving as a local public school, and in 1915 it was converted into a tourist hotel. The building is T-shaped, with a three-bay central pavilion projecting from the main rectangular block. A two-story wooden porch (probably added during the hotel conversion) wraps around this central pavilion, with massive square posts and a solid weatherboard balustrade.The hotel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

First Presbyterian Church, formerly the Franklin Presbyterian Church, is a church in Franklin, North Carolina, United States. It was built in 1856 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. In 1993, it was rewired, fitted with HVAC and given new interior walls.

Saint Agnes Episcopal Church is a historic building located in Franklin, North Carolina, United States. It is a Chapel of All Saints Episcopal Church. From 1888 until 2014 St. Agnes was its own Episcopal Parish but in November of that year it officially merged with St. Cyprian's Episcopal Church to form an entirely new parish: All Saints Episcopal Church. All Saints is one congregation making use of two buildings: St. Agnes Chapel and St. Cyprian's Chapel. They use their website and Facebook to publish their worship schedule and keep parishioners and visitors up to date on where worship will be each Sunday.The Chapel is an historic redbrick Gothic Revival Episcopal church building located at 66 Church Street in Franklin, Macon County, North Carolina. Built in 1888, it was designed by architect William Gould Bulgin. The Rev. John A. Deal, the first Episcopal missioner in Macon County, was responsible for founding Saint Agnes as well as Incarnation in Highlands. On June 4, 1987, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Jesse R. Siler House is a historic house at 115 West Main Street in Franklin, North Carolina. It is prominently sited at the base of the hill on which most of the city is located. A two-story log structure was built on this site c. 1819, and expanded between 1820 and 1830 by Jesse Siler, a prominent early settler of the area. It was modified significantly over the 19th century, most notably receiving a prominent Greek Revival tetrastyle portico. It retains many interior features from Siler's period of modification, exhibiting transitional Georgian-Federal styling in its mantels.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Albert Swain Bryson House, known locally as Hall of the Pines, is a historic house in Franklin, North Carolina. The 2+1⁄2-story brick and frame house occupies a prominent site on Pine Lane overlooking Main Street. It was built in the 1870s for Albert Swain Bryson, a prominent local farmer and magistrate. The house is a regionally rare example of vernacular Gothic and Italianate style, with steeply-pitched gables decorated with paired brackets, and a two-level porch with delicate sawn balustrade.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The Nantahala River () is a river in western North Carolina in the United States, within the Nantahala National Forest, and near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Two-lane U.S. Highway 19/74 runs along the river, picnic areas dotting the route. In 1839, this was an unimproved large path, part of what became known as the Trail of Tears as the Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their homelands in this region to west of the Mississippi River and Indian Territory. The river rises near the border of Georgia and North Carolina, close to the Southern Nantahala Wilderness and the Appalachian Trail. It flows into the Little Tennessee River at Fontana Lake, a reservoir formed behind Fontana Dam. The word Nantahala is Cherokee and means "Land of the Noonday Sun". The river runs through a narrow and steep gorge where in some areas the sun reaches the ground only when it is directly overhead during the middle of the day. During the colonial era, Cherokee towns along the Nantahala, upper Hiwassee River, and Valley River in what is now North Carolina were known as the Valley Towns.

The Pendergrass Building is a historic commercial building at 6 West Main Street in Franklin, North Carolina. The two-story brick building was built in 1904, and is a virtually unaltered example of retail construction of the period. It was used as a retail store until 1975. The building is now home to the Macon County Historical Society and Museum.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Franklin is a town in and the county seat of Macon County, North Carolina, United States. It is situated within the Nantahala National Forest. The population was reported to be 4,175 in the 2020 census, an increase from the total of 3,845 tabulated in 2010. The town developed around a 1,000-year old platform mound, the center of the historic Cherokee town of Nikwasi. Franklin is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, specifically in relation to the Nantahala National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains, and the Appalachian Trail. The town and the surrounding area is rich in gems and minerals, and is known locally as the "Gem Capital of The World."

WNCC (104.1 FM) is a radio station broadcasting a country music format. Licensed to serve Franklin, North Carolina, United States, the station is owned by Sutton Radiocasting Corporation, and features programming from ABC News Radio and Westwood One. Its main radio tower is located on Cowee Mountain, along with W267AD 101.3 and W285FD 104.9, and construction permits for W265AZ 100.9 and W262CE on 92.9. W267AD and W285FD are listed as having WNCC as their primary station, and WNCC provided digital notification to the FCC, indicating that they are being used as a legal fiction for circumventing both local ownership caps and the rulemaking process of getting new stations on the air by simulcasting on WNCC's "HD Radio" digital subchannels. These supposed "broadcast translators" are instead intended to retransmit the main analog audio to areas blocked by the mountains, and are prohibited from carrying their own programming. W265AZ also shows WNCC as its primary station, but is still located atop Wayah Bald west of Franklin, and unlike the first two is not owned by Sutton. W262CE is owned by Sutton, but lists WFSC (1050 AM) in Franklin as its primary station, and is currently at 100.3 on Black Rock Mountain in a state park near Clayton, Georgia (where it is outside of WFSC's broadcast range, which is not permitted by the FCC). W267AD has Cherokee, North Carolina as its city of license, the others are all Franklin. W262CE has an effective power of 130 watts, while all of the others (including WNCC itself) are at or very close to 115 watts at the same height, indicating that they all share a single radio antenna through a diplexer.
