Wemmel

Wemmel Castle is a former aristocratic estate in the centre of Wemmel in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant. It was formerly the property of the noble house of Taye.

Laerbeek Wood (French: Bois du Laerbeek) or Laarbeek Wood (Dutch: Laarbeekbos) is a public forest in the municipality of Jette in Brussels, Belgium. It covers an area of 34 hectares (84 acres), making it the largest forest area in the north of the Brussels-Capital Region. The forest is located on the border with the Flemish Region and is connected to an open space in the north, although the Brussels Ring forms a barrier there. To the south and south-east, Laerbeek Wood borders other green areas: the Poelbos, King Baudouin Park and the Jette-Ganshoren Marshes. To the east, the forest borders the Campus Jette with the UZ Brussel. The appearance of Laerbeek Wood, with its many old beeches, is somewhat reminiscent of the Sonian Forest. The past of Laerbeek Wood, like that of the neighbouring Dieleghem Wood and Poelbos, is linked to the history of the Premonstratensian Dieleghem Abbey, founded in the 11th century. Laerbeek Wood has an exceptional biodiversity and is part of the Natura 2000 Special Protection Area in the Brussels-Capital Region.

King Baudouin (French: Roi Baudouin, Dutch: Koning Boudewijn) is a Brussels metro station and the western terminus of line 6 (formerly 1A). It is located in Laeken, in the northwest of the City of Brussels (Belgium), and serves the King Baudouin Stadium. It opened on 25 August 1998.

The Dielegembos (Dutch) or Bois de Dieleghem (French) is a public forest in the municipality of Jette in Brussels, Belgium. It covers an area of 9 hectares (22 acres) and was acquired by the municipality in 1952. Along with the Poelbos and the Laarbeekbos, the Dielegembos is an integral part of the regional King Baudouin Park.The forest is located between the Avenue Jean Joseph Crocq/Jean Joseph Crocqlaan, the Rue Bonaventure/Bonaventurestraat, the Avenue du Heymbosch/Heymboschlaan, the Avenue Henri Liebrecht/Henri Liebrechtlaan, and the Avenue Jacques Swartenbrouck/Jacques Swartenbroucklaan.

Dieleghem Abbey is a former abbey in Jette, northwestern Brussels, Belgium.

Relegem is a town and deelgemeente in the municipality of Asse in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. Relegem was its own municipality until January 1, 1977 when it was merged with Asse as part of the fusion of the Belgian municipalities. Just before the merger, it had an area of 3.56 km2 (1.37 sq mi), and a total of 1116 inhabitants.

The King Baudouin Stadium (French: Stade Roi Baudouin [stad ʁwɑ bodwɛ̃]; Dutch: Koning Boudewijnstadion [ˌkoːnɪŋ ˈbʌudəʋɛinˌstaːdijɔn]) is a sports ground in north-west Brussels, Belgium. Located in the Heysel section of the Brussels municipality, it was built to embellish the Heysel plateau in view of the 1935 Brussels International Exposition. It was inaugurated on 23 August 1930, with Crown Prince Leopold attending the opening ceremony. The stadium hosted 70,000 at the time. A wooden track for cycling races was later added around the pitch. Its name honours Baudouin of Belgium, Leopold's son and successor as King of the Belgians, from 1951 to his death in 1993.

Bouchout Castle (Dutch: Kasteel van Bouchout) is a castle in the Flemish town of Meise, Belgium. In the 12th century, this territory of the young Duchy of Brabant was strategically positioned between the County of Flanders and the Berthout family, lords of Grimbergen. Most likely, the first fortification was built by Wouter van Craaynem at the end of the Grimbergen Wars (1150–1170). Bouchout Castle is situated at an altitude of 32 meters. At about 1300, the Donjon tower of Bouchout Castle was erected by Daniel van Bouchout, a knight who fought gloriously at the Battle of Worringen. In the 15th and 16th century, Bouchout Castle was owned by the Van der Marck and van Sevenbergen sayd Transylvanus families. The castle fell into disrepair due to lack of maintenance, while the Spanish dominance and the iconoclastic fury further worsened its condition. The first major renovation was performed by Christoffel d'Assonville at about 1600. The rectangular medieval Bouchout Castle was surrounded by a large pond and could only be reached by a long drawbridge. At the end of the 17th century, Peter-Ferdinand Roose transformed the castle into a Renaissance "Chateau de Bouchout", surrounded with French ornamental gardens. Unfortunately, the castle was partly destroyed during the French Revolution period (1800–1830). Again, the castle was restored in 1832 by count Amadeus de Beauffort, who gave Bouchout Castle its current Neo-Gothic appearance. From 1879 until 1927, Empress Carlota of Mexico, born Princess Charlotte of Belgium, lived at the Bouchout Domain. Her husband Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, head of the Second Mexican Empire, was executed by Mexican republicans in 1867. Thereafter Charlotte led a secluded life at Bouchout Castle. Since 1939, the Bouchout Domain has developed into the National Botanic Garden of Belgium. Since the last renovation of 1987–1989, the castle and its rooms are now being used for meetings, lectures and exhibitions.

The Heysel Stadium disaster (Italian: Strage dell'Heysel [ˈstraʤe ˈdel ˈhaɪzl̩]; German: Katastrophe von Heysel [ˈhaɪzl̩]; French: Drame du Heysel [ɛzɛl]; Dutch: Heizeldrama [ˈɦɛizəlˌdraːmaː]) was a crowd disaster that occurred on 29 May 1985 when mostly Juventus fans escaping from a breach by Liverpool fans were pressed against a collapsing wall in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Belgium, before the start of the 1985 European Cup Final between the Italian and English clubs. 39 people—mostly Italians and Juventus fans—were killed and 600 were injured in the confrontation.Approximately an hour before the Juventus–Liverpool final was due to kick off, Liverpool supporters charged at Juventus supporters and breached a fence that was separating them from a "neutral area". The cause of the rampage has been attributed by eyewitnesses to Liverpool fans who had been drinking heavily. Juventus fans ran back on the terraces and away from the threat into a concrete wall. Fans already standing near the wall were crushed; eventually the wall collapsed, allowing others to escape. Many people climbed over to safety, but many others died or were badly injured. The game was played despite the pre-match incidents by authorities and organizers' joint decision for public policy doctrine reasons after being declared a state of siege in the city, with Juventus winning 1–0.The tragedy resulted in all English football clubs being placed under an indefinite ban by Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) from all European competitions (lifted in 1990–91), with Liverpool being excluded for an additional two years, later reduced to one, and fourteen Liverpool fans found guilty of manslaughter and each sentenced to six years' imprisonment. The disaster was later described as "the darkest hour in the history of the UEFA competitions".

Ossel is a hamlet in Flemish Brabant, Belgium. It is part of the municipality of Merchtem. The hamlet is built around the church of St John the Baptist, which dates from the Middle Ages. The nave was built in 1632 and the extension of the aisles in 1779. In 2007, paintings dating from the late medieval period were uncovered under the limestone vaults of the choir.

The Heysel Plateau (French: Plateau du Heysel, Dutch: Heizelplateau) or Heysel Park (French: Parc du Heysel, Dutch: Heizelpark), usually shortened to Heysel (French: [ɛzɛl]) or Heizel (Dutch: [ˈɦɛizəl] (listen)), is a neighbourhood, park and exhibition space in Laeken, northern Brussels, Belgium, where the Brussels International Exposition of 1935 and the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58) took place. The Atomium, a symbolic 103-metre-tall (338 ft) modernist structure, originally built for Expo 58, is the most impressive monument on the Heysel Plateau and is now considered a landmark of Brussels. Opposite it, the Centenary Palace is one of the lasting remaining buildings of the 1935 World's Fair. It was also the venue for the 32nd Eurovision Song Contest in 1987. Currently, it is home to the Brussels Exhibition Centre (Brussels Expo), the city's most important event complex in Belgium and the largest exhibition space in the Benelux.The Heysel Plateau was also the location of the Heysel Stadium, Belgium's former national stadium, originally built in 1930. After the Heysel Stadium disaster of 1985, which claimed the lives of 39 spectators at the European Cup final, it was demolished and in its place was built the more modern and secure King Baudouin Stadium. The Bruparck entertainment park (with among others Mini-Europe miniature park and Kinepolis cinema) and the Planetarium of the Royal Observatory of Belgium are also located there, as is the Palais 12/Paleis 12, a large and modern multiuse indoor arena with a maximum capacity of 15,000 people. This site is served by Heysel/Heizel metro station on line 6 of the Brussels Metro.

Rivieren Castle (Dutch: Kasteel ter Rivieren; French: Chateau Rivieren) is a twelfth-century castle in Ganshoren, Brussels, Belgium. Rivieren Castle is situated at an elevation of 40 meters.Originally a defence tower, the present-day castle was built in different phases from the twelfth to the nineteenth century. Originally a possession of the Clutinck (Clutinc/Clutinckx) family, the castle later changed ownership several times until it finally was sold in 1973. Today, the castle is used for conferences, receptions, expositions and similar kinds of events. The Castle ter Rivieren is located in a park of 10 hectares.
