Echo Summit is a mountain pass over the Sierra Nevada in the western United States, located in eastern El Dorado County, California. At 7,377 ft (2,249 m) above sea level, it is the highest point on U.S. Route 50 in California, which traverses it at postmile 66.48 between Twin Bridges and Meyers, south of Lake Tahoe. The "Sierra Nevada Southern Route" (aka the "Pioneer Route") of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States, was routed over nearby Johnson Pass in 1913. The current alignment over Echo Summit was constructed between 1936 and 1939.The "Sierra Nevada Northern Route" of the Lincoln Highway went over Donner Pass. Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy is the first hockey preparatory boarding school in California. It is located in South Lake Tahoe, California on 16.2 acres in the Meyers community. It provides elite high altitude training, athletics and fully accredited NCAA college preparatory academics for student-athletes in the 9th thru 12th grade. Tahoe Prep Academy also offers an additional year for post-graduate students. The Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy was founded by Leo Fenn, Mike Sechrist & Michael Lewis in 2016. Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy had two teams, Prep & Varsity, in their inaugural season which played in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League and the Western Prep Hockey League for the 2016/17 season. They practice out of their home rink the Tahoe Ice Arena in South Lake Tahoe. The Tahoe Prep Academy has several NHL Players on their advisory board of directors including NHL All-Star and Hall of Fame player, Teemu Selänne, who works closely with his good friend, Leo Fenn, on several different business ventures. Fenn & Selanne founded the Selanne Foundation in 2010 to assist with youth hockey in the Southern California area. For 2017/18 season, Tahoe Prep Academy team has been approved to play in the North American Hockey League Future Prospects Tournaments in Blaine MN. For the 2018/19 season, Tahoe Prep Academy has joined the NAHL Prep Division which has been created for Prep teams throughout North America. NAHL is generally regarded as one of the top Junior leagues in North America and competition to the Tier I Elite league. The Tahoe Prep Academy hockey teams are coached under the direction of Mike Lewis from the in the Crease hockey documentary film in 2006 and Leo Fenn, who has coached in So Cal with the JSerra Catholic High School, LA Jr Kings and the Anaheim Jr Ducks programs.

Talking Mountain in El Dorado County, California is a peak in the Sierra Nevada located on the high ridge that extends eastward from the summit of Ralston Peak in the Eldorado National Forest. It is south of Lake Tahoe, south of Echo Lake and marks the border of the Desolation Wilderness. South of the summit, U.S. Route 50 follows the South Fork of the American River.

Meyers (also Yanks, Yank's Station, and Tahoe Paradise) is a small unincorporated community in El Dorado County, California, United States, along U.S. Route 50 in the northern Sierra Nevada. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of South Lake Tahoe in the Lake Tahoe area and lies at an elevation of 6,352 feet (1,936 metres). Established in 1851, Meyers started out as a stagecoach stop, trading post and Pony Express station. The town is now registered as California Historical Landmark #708. It serves as a popular stop on the way into and out of the Tahoe Basin for travelers on Highway 50 and Highway 89.

The Angora Fire was a 2007 wind-driven wildfire in El Dorado County, California. It started near North Upper Truckee Road subdivision near Angora Lakes, Fallen Leaf Lake, Echo Lake and South Lake Tahoe, California around 2:15 PM on Sunday, June 24, 2007, as a result of an illegal campfire. As of July 2, 2007, the fire was 100% contained, and 100% control (all interior fires extinguished) was achieved on July 10. The fire burned 3,100 acres (12.5 km2), destroyed 242 residences and 67 commercial structures, and damaged 35 other homes. At the peak of the fire, there were as many as 2,180 firefighters involved in battling the blaze. As of July 2, 2007, there were still 260 personnel fighting the remaining fires in the interior of the containment line. The fire cost $11.7 million to fight, and caused at least $141 million in property damage.

Phillips (formerly, Phillip's and Vade Post Office) is a small unincorporated community in El Dorado County, California. It is located on the South Fork of the American River, 2.5 miles (4 km) west of Echo Summit, at an elevation of 6,873 feet (2095 m). It is the site of the Sierra-at-Tahoe ski resort. The ZIP code is 95720. The community is inside area code 530. Joseph Wells Davis Phillips began cattle ranching here in 1859, and opened a hotel in 1863. The Vade post office operated at Phillips from 1912 to 1961. As of 2020, the Phillips family still owned the townsite, which has long been a site for manual surveys of Sierra Nevada snowpack.

The Angora Lakes are two small freshwater lakes in the Sierra Nevada and Lake Tahoe Watershed ~1,200 ft (370 m) in elevation above Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe. It is the location of the Angora Lakes Resort, a small summer outdoor recreation location. The lakes were named for a herd of Angora goats that used to graze in the area. To reach Angora Lakes from Hwy 89, take the Fallen Leaf Lake Rd. turnoff for approximately 2 miles (3.2 km). (Alternate route: Lake Tahoe Blvd. to Tahoe Mountain Rd.) Turn left and climb to the top of the one-lane road and look for the dirt road and a sign reading "1214". From there, an at times steep and at times paved road leads to fantastic vistas and ends in the Angora Lakes trailhead parking lot. There is a 1-mile (1.6 km) uphill hike to Angora Lake.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is a ski and snowboard resort in Twin Bridges, California south of Lake Tahoe. Sierra-at-Tahoe is approximately 16 miles (26 km) south of Stateline, Nevada and 12 miles south of South Lake Tahoe on U.S. Route 50 and is contained within the Eldorado National Forest. Sierra-at-Tahoe (often shortened to "Sierra") is a medium-sized ski area in the Lake Tahoe region, and is well known for being a more family oriented resort and also having a high annual snowfall. Sierra-at-Tahoe's terrain is 25 percent beginner, 50 percent Intermediate, and 25 percent advanced. The majority of the ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe region are on the northern end of the lake, near Truckee, California and Reno, Nevada. Sierra-at-Tahoe, Kirkwood and Heavenly are located south of the lake, approximately 75 miles (120 km) from Reno. It is common for visitors to ski amongst these three resorts when staying in southern Lake Tahoe area and not venture to the northern lake resorts such as Palisades Tahoe, Northstar at Tahoe, Sugar Bowl, which are approximately 50–70 miles away. This resort also serves many communities around the eastern Sacramento region as it is in close proximity being located before the road summit on U.S. Route 50. The high schools of El Dorado County all use the resort for training, and competitions for their snowboard and ski teams.
