It was created at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne. It consists of the following communes:

The Battle of La Brossinière or Battle of la Gravelle (French – la "besoigne" de la Brossinière) was a battle of the Hundred Years' War on 26 September 1423. It occurred at La Brossinière (commune of Bourgon, Mayenne), between the forces of England and France, shortly after hostilities had resumed, following the battle of Agincourt (1415). The English force commanded by Sir John De la Pole, brother of William de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk, which had returned to Normandy after a pillaging expedition to Anjou and Maine, suffered a crushing defeat. Chronique de la Pucelle reports that "there were great deeds of arms done" and that the English "were beaten in the field and there were fourteen to fifteen hundred killed"

Azé (French pronunciation: [aze]) is a former commune in the Mayenne department in northwestern France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne.

Ménil (French pronunciation: [menil]) is a commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France. Its population in the census of 1999 was 785 inhabitants. It is a member of the Community of Pays de Château-Gontier.

Chemazé (French pronunciation: [ʃəmaze]) is a commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France.

Coudray (French pronunciation: [kudʁɛ]) is a commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France.

La Roche-Neuville (French pronunciation: [la ʁɔʃ nøvil]) is a commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France. It was established on 1 January 2019 by merger of the former communes of Loigné-sur-Mayenne (the seat) and Saint-Sulpice.

Loigné-sur-Mayenne (French pronunciation: [lwaɲe syʁ majɛn], literally Loigné on Mayenne) is a former commune in the Mayenne department in north-western France. On 1 January 2019, it was merged into the new commune La Roche-Neuville.
