The Atchison Storage Facility, commonly known as the Atchison Caves is a 2.7 million square foot underground storage facility in a former pillar limestone mine 50 to 150 feet (15 to 46 m) below the ground in the Missouri River bluffs at Atchison, Kansas. The bunker complex was a secure U.S. government storage facility from World War II until 2013. As of April 2015, Smart Warehousing, based in Kansas, owns the Atchison Caves.The facility, which is adjacent to Jackson Park in Atchison, has 125 acres of above ground land and 60 acres of underground storage space and has been called the "World's Largest One-Level Storage Facility".

Cantonment Martin was intended to be a temporary Army camp to provide support for an engineering expedition led by Stephen H. Long. Possibly the first troops marched from St. Louis, Missouri, to what is now the western border of Missouri. The troops, commanded by Capt. Wyly Martin, established a post that was probably on the northwest section of Cow Island, because of abundant cottonwood timber there.Cow Island was named Isle au Vache by the French, which literally meant Island of the Cow. A lone cow was discovered on the island, in the Missouri River. It was speculated that Indians may have placed it there to prevent its escape or possibly it was a buffalo that strayed from its herd. Eventually the island's name was shortened to Cow Island. This island no longer exists. It is today on the Kansas side of the shore of the Missouri River between Atchison, Kansas, and Fort Leavenworth.Long's expedition set out by boat from St. Louis from St. Louis in June 1819. He started with four boat, but lost one in a river snag along the way. The most useful was the Western Engineer, which was a stern wheeler steamboat. Long was charged with running a peace powwow between two Indian groups and the Indians agreed to stop committing depredations against the Army.Long's men were at the post for the winter and they set out up the river. After they returned in October the post was abandoned. It was temporarily occupied in 1826 and it was called Camp Croghan.

It is located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas and sponsored by the St. Benedict's Abbey (monastery) and Mount St. Scholastica (convent) in Atchison, KS. It became Maur Hill–Mount Academy with the merger of the two long established schools: Maur Hill Prep School (1919) was an all-boys school and Mount St. Scholastica Academy (1863), an all-girls school. The student population is around 190-220 students (about 80-90 boarding and 100-120 day students from the surrounding area. Boarding students attend from many states across the US and approximately 50 of the boarding students are international students.
