Polebrook

Ashton Wold is a 54.0-hectare (133-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) east of the market town Oundle in Northamptonshire.It is part of the Ashton Estate, which was purchased in 1860 by Lionel de Rothschild, a banker and politician. His grandson, Charles Rothschild, the founder of the Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves, now The Wildlife Trusts, managed the Ashton Wold estate to maximise its suitability for wildlife, especially butterflies. He built Ashton Wold House, which was designed by William Huckvale. The house and its garden are listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens by English Heritage for their historic interest, and part of the garden is woodland which is designated as Ashton Wold SSSI. Part of the estate is the subject of a Restrictive Covenant between Charles's daughter Miriam Rothschild and the National Trust in 1945. Following Charles death in 1923 his wife, Rozsika and their daughter Miriam Rothschild inherited the estate. Miriam pressed the UK Government to allow more German Jews as refugees from Nazi Germany and set up housing for 49 Jewish children. During World War II Ashton Wold estate served as a hospital for wounded military personnel, including Miriam's future husband, Captain George Lane. It also provided accommodation blocks in the Ashton Wold woods for the RAF and the American Eighth Air Force billeted at nearby Polebrook Airfield.The Ashton Estate comprises residential properties, holiday accommodations (The Lady Rothschild Holiday Houses), agricultural land and a working farm. The current host of The Lady Rothschild Holiday Houses is Dr Charles Daniel Lane. Dr Lane enjoyed an outstanding career as a molecular biologist who along with colleagues Gerard Marbaix and John Gurdon discovered the oocyte exogenous mRNA expression system.

Royal Air Force Polebrook or more simply RAF Polebrook is a former Royal Air Force station located 3.5 miles (5.6 km) east-south-east of Oundle, at Polebrook, Northamptonshire, England. The airfield was built on Rothschild estate land starting in August 1940. It was from Polebrook that the United States Army Air Forces' Eighth Air Force carried out its first heavy bomb group (Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress) combat mission on 17 August 1942, and from which Major Clark Gable flew combat missions in 1943.

Warmington is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England with a population of 874 (as of the 2001 census), increasing to 939 at the 2011 Census. The village's name means 'Farm/settlement which is connected with Wyrma'. It is 2+1⁄2 miles east of the town of Oundle near the Cambridgeshire border and is 10 miles south west of the city of Peterborough. It has a large 13th-century church, and fine watermill, manor house and dovecote. Most of the houses, however, were built in the 1960s and 1970s. A large estate of private homes has been added since the turn of the millennium increasing the size of the village by around 30%. Warmington is a working, functional village with some impressive old stone buildings which are considered very attractive. The Nene Way footpath runs through the village and is well signposted.

Tansor is a village and civil parish in the English county of Northamptonshire. Lying near the River Nene, three miles north-east of the town of Oundle and a mile from the village of Cotterstock, Tansor forms part of North Northamptonshire. At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 185 people, reducing to 172 at the 2011 Census. Attractions are limited; only a church, telephone box and a village hall containing a playgroup. The Church of St Mary the Virgin is Grade II* listed. The village's name origin is dubious. 'Tan's ridge' or maybe, 'Tan's river bank'. On the other hand, Old English 'tan' may be utilized in the moved feeling of the part of a stream with a 'river bank'. A notable son of Tansor was the naturalist and writer Horace William Wheelwright, born there in 1815.

Hemington is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England. The parish population (including the neighbouring small parishes of Luddington-in-the-Brook and Thurning) at the 2011 Census was 257.The village's name means 'estate associated with a man called Hemma or Hemmi'. Other sources suggest the specific may be Old English hemming, meaning a border or an enclosure.

Fotheringhay Castle, also known as Fotheringay Castle, was a High Middle Age Norman Motte-and-bailey castle in the village of Fotheringhay 3+1⁄2 miles (5.6 km) to the north of the market town of Oundle, Northamptonshire, England (grid reference TL061930). It was probably founded around 1100 by Simon de Senlis, Earl of Northampton. In 1113, possession passed to Prince David of Scotland when he married Simon's widow. The castle then descended with the Scottish princes until the early 13th century, when it was confiscated by King John of England. By 1220, Fotheringhay Castle was controlled by Ranulf de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester. In January the following year, it was briefly captured by William II de Forz, 3rd Earl of Albemarle, in his rebellion against King Henry III. Forz abandoned the castle, Henry III took it under his control, and Fotheringhay remained in royal hands until the reign of Edward II. It was a favoured residence of the Dukes of York, and King Richard III was born there in 1452. It was also the final place of imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was tried and executed in the castle in 1587. The castle was dismantled in the 1630s and most of the masonry was removed, leaving only the earthworks. The site is protected as a Scheduled Monument and is open to the public.

The Church of St Mary and All Saints, Fotheringhay is a parish church in the Church of England in Fotheringhay, Northamptonshire. It is noted for containing a mausoleum to leading members of the Yorkist dynasty of the Wars of the Roses.

Elton Hall is a baronial hall in Elton, Cambridgeshire. It has been the ancestral home of the Proby family (sometime known as the Earls of Carysfort) since 1660. The hall lies in an 3,800-acre (1,500 ha) estate through which the River Nene runs. The building incorporates 15th-, 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century parts and is a Grade I listed building.Elton Hall is 2 miles (3.2 km) from Fotheringhay Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was executed in 1587. The Victorian gardens have been skilfully restored in recent years and contain a knot garden, a new rose and herbaceous garden, fine hedges and a Gothic orangery built to celebrate the Millennium. The gardens are promoted by the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

Luddington-in-the-Brook or Luddington in the Brook is a village in North Northamptonshire, England. The name of its civil parish is Luddington. Owing to its small size, for census purposes the population of the parish is combined with the neighbouring parish of Hemington. The village's name means 'farm/settlement connected with Lulla'. St. Margaret's Church, a Gothic Revival building designed by Richard Carpenter, is Grade II listed.

Fotheringhay is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England. It is 4 miles (6.4 km) north-east of Oundle and around 13 miles (21 km) west of Peterborough. It is most noted for being the site of Fotheringhay (or Fotheringay) Castle which was razed in 1627. There is nothing left of the castle to be seen today other than the motte on which it was built that provides excellent views of the River Nene. The Nene Way long distance footpath runs through the village. As the home of the great Yorkist line, the village was, for a considerable part of the 15th and 16th centuries, of national standing. The death of Richard III at Bosworth Field altered its history irrevocably. As the historian John Nicholls stated, "Fotheringhay has been distinguished beyond any other place in Britain, except the Capital, by the aggravated misfortunes of Royalty." At the time of the 2001 census, the parish's population was 123 people, reducing to 119 at the 2011 census.

St Peter's Church, Lutton is a Grade I Listed medieval church, which stands on the highest point in the village of Lutton, Northamptonshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. It is an active Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Peterborough, the Archdeaconry of Oakham and the deanery of Oundle.

Elton is a small village within the historic boundaries of Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambridgeshire), England. It lies on the B671 road. Elton Hall and the hamlet of Over End are located on the same road a mile south of the village.
