Montirat, Aude

Fontiès-d'Aude (French pronunciation: [fɔ̃tjɛs dod] (listen); Occitan: Fontièrs d'Aude) is a commune in the Aude department in southern France.

Lac de la Cavayère is an artificial lake in the Occitanie région of France, close to the mediaeval town of Carcassonne. The lake, also known as Carcassonne Plage (in English, Carcassonne Beach), was created by the building of a 23 metre high dam in 1988 after severe forest fires affected the area in 1985. The surface area of the lake, which is fed by the creeks of Montirat, Bazalac and Mitgé, is 180,000 m² and it is 1.5 million cubic metres in volume. It is a short distance from the town of Carcassonne and has been made into a popular recreation area. Ducks and wildfowl are common and the 400,000 m² surrounding area is notable for a diversity of habitats, flora and fauna. The beaches slope gently and there are supervised bathing areas. Boats are available for rent and there are picnic areas and a crazy golf course as well as a nearby chateau. During 2005 the lake was closed to bathing due to strong algal blooms.

The Orbiel Aqueduct (French: Pont-canal de l'Orbiel) is one of several aqueducts on the Canal du Midi. Until its building, the canal crossed the River Orbiel on the level. A dam on the Orbiel was demolished and replaced with the Aqueduct. It was built in 1686-87 by Antoine Niquet and designed by Marshal Sebastien Vauban, It is found in the city of Trèbes.

Palaja (French pronunciation: [palaʒa] (listen); Occitan: Palajan) is a small French town, located in the department of Aude in Occitanie region. It is part of the urban area of Carcassonne. At the last census in 2015, Palaja had 2,277 inhabitants - called the Palajanese. Because of its proximity to the medieval city of Carcassonne and its privileged environment, the municipality of Palaja is renowned for its living environment, hiking trails and the many possible activities within a radius of five kilometres (golf, beach, acrobatic park, water sports centre, Australian park...). It represents the wealthy suburbs of Carcassonne.
