Syracuse ( SIRR-ə-kewz, SERR-, -⁠kewss) is a city and the county seat of Onondaga County, New York, United States. With a population of 148,620 and a metropolitan area of 662,057, it is the fifth-most populated city and 13th-most populated municipality in the state of New York.Formally established in 1820, Syracuse was named after the classical Greek city Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian), a city on the eastern coast of the Italian island of Sicily, for its similar natural features. It has historically functioned as a major crossroads, first between the Erie Canal and its branch canals, then of the railway network. Today, the city is at the intersection of Interstates 81 and 90, and its airport is the largest in Central New York, a five-county region of over one million inhabitants. Syracuse is the economic and educational hub of Central New York. It hosts a number of convention sites, including a large downtown convention complex, and is home to prominent institutions such as Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY ESF, and Le Moyne College.

The Patrick J. Corbett Justice Center, otherwise known as the Onondaga County Justice Center is a maximum-security facility located in Syracuse, New York. Designed with state of the art technology, the Justice Center has been operating as a direct supervision jail since 1995. housing a variety of incarcerated individuals based in Onondaga County prior to transfer to state correctional facilities. The Justice Center currently holds a maximum capacity of 605 inmates, classifying it as a medium-sized correctional facility.

The Central New York Telephone and Telegraph Building, also known as the Onondaga Historical Association Building, designed by Henry W. Wilkinson, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and is part of the Montgomery Street-Columbus Circle Historic District, listed in 1979. It was the first building in Syracuse designed specifically to house the telephone company, and did so from 1899 to 1905, when the company moved to bigger facilities. In 1905, the Onondaga Historical Association purchased the building.

The Carnegie Building in Syracuse, New York, previously known as the Syracuse Public Library, is a historic Carnegie library on Montgomery Street at Jefferson Circle in downtown Syracuse. It was built by the City of Syracuse in 1905-06, and came into County of Onondaga ownership in 1976. The building served as a library for 83 years and was the main library of the Syracuse Public Library system, which merged with Onondaga County's library system in 1976 to become the Onondaga County Public Library System. As "Carnegie Library", it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing building in the Montgomery Street–Columbus Circle Historic District in 1980. Following acquisition and renovation by the Carnegie Redevelopment Corp., a local development corporation, the building was leased by the Syracuse city school district for 15 years, from 1996 - 2012 when the school district chose not to renew its lease option. In 2019, after it had sat vacant for eight years, a proposal was floated to renovate it for $4.1 million to hold city and county planning and economic development offices and save on the city's rental costs. The plan was approved in 2021 and work began in 2022, but its current status is unknown as of July 2024.

Columbus Circle is a neighborhood and plaza in the downtown section of Syracuse, New York, United States. At the center of the circle is a large fountain and the Columbus Monument, designed by the Syracuse-born architect Dwight James Baum and dedicated in 1934. Columbus Circle is home to Syracuse's two cathedrals, the Episcopalian St. Paul's Cathedral and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, as well as the Onondaga County Courthouse and the John H. Mulroy Civic Center. The circle, originally known as Library Circle and later as St. Mary's Circle, began as a chiefly residential district. Beginning in the early 20th century it slowly developed as government and commercial buildings were constructed. From 1913 to 1933 the circle played host to the cities annual tree lighting. After the Columbus Monument's dedication in 1934, it was the site of annual memorial services on Columbus Day as well as protests advocating for its removal. In October 2020 the city of Syracuse announced plans to remove the statue of Christopher Columbus and redevelop the circle into "Heritage Park." The removal was halted by a court decision in 2022, which the city successfully appealed.

People's African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal Zion church located in Downtown Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. It was designed by architect Charles Erastus Colton and Wallace Rayfield and built in 1911. It is a small Gothic Revival style stuccoed brick building. It sits on a cut limestone foundation and measures approximately 25 feet wide and 50 feet deep. It has a two-story projecting front gable and features a three-story bell tower topped by a pyramidal roof. The congregation was incorporated in 1837 and remained at this location until 1976.: 5, 9, 33 It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

The Syracuse City Hall is the city hall of Syracuse, New York. Unusually for civic buildings in the United States, it was constructed from 1889 to 1893 in the Romanesque Revival architectural style. The bid accepted for the construction was for $238,750.00 from Hughes Brothers of Syracuse.

The Erie Canal Museum is a historical museum about the Erie Canal located in Syracuse, New York. The museum was founded in 1962 and is a private, non-profit corporation. It is housed in the Syracuse Weighlock Building dating from 1850. The Syracuse Weighlock Building was in operation as a weighlock from 1850 to 1883. In 1883 the canal decided to stop charging tolls. The weighlock building was essentially used as a big, elaborate scale to weigh the boats traveling on the Erie Canal and determine how much each boat would pay for a toll. Today the museum includes not only artifacts from the Erie Canal, but also a gallery of present canal life. It is the mission of the museum to help people to learn the rich history of the Erie Canal and that it is not just a thing of the past, but still very much exists today in different forms. The museum's Weighlock Building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

Forman Park, in Syracuse, New York, was first established on June 16, 1839 and was known as Forman Square. The main attraction is a bronze memorial of early civic leaders, Joshua Forman and Lewis H. Redfield. The park was established by the Forman Park Trustees of the village of Syracuse.

St. Paul's Cathedral in Syracuse, New York was designed by Henry Dudley, who worked with Frank Wills until Wills' early death in 1857.The church is located at 310 Montgomery Street in downtown Syracuse.
