St. Florian Monastery

Sankt Florian (also Florian or St. Florian) is a town in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It is 10 miles (16 km) from Linz. Sankt Florian is the home of St. Florian Monastery, a community of Canons Regular named after Saint Florian and one of the oldest operational monasteries in the world following the Rule of St. Augustine. Composer Anton Bruckner (1824–96), who was a choirboy and later organist in the town, is buried beneath the organ inside the monastic church, which was elevated to the rank of basilica minor in 1999.

The Florianerbahn is a museum tramway in Upper Austria that is not operational due to construction work. It was built as a railway - a licensed narrow gauge Lokalbahn or branch line - between the independent commununity of Ebelsberg (today a district within Linz) and Sankt Florian. It was owned by the Lokalbahn Ebelsberg–St. Florian AG, but operated by the firm of Stern & Hafferl from Gmunden. Because the line had the character of a tramway (Überlandstraßenbahn) it switched over to providing tramway services in the wake of the annexation of Austria in 1938 – along with Stern & Hafferl's sister companies Elektrische Lokalbahn Unterach–See and Elektrische Lokalbahn Gmunden. The rail gauge is the same as that of the Linz tramway, 900 mm (2 ft 11+7⁄16 in), the line is electrified, operating at 600 V C. It ran regular services from 2 September 1913 to the end of 1973. From 1929 it was connected directly to the Linz tramway network at Ebelsberg, so that trailer coaches could run through from Linz to St. Florian. The line was officially opened on 1 September 1913. The specially decorated first train, consisting of a railcar and two carriages, left Sankt Florian at 6:22 and arrived at Ebelsberg at 6:50. 42 of the 96 places available were taken. After the fall in passenger numbers and the cessation of services on 31 December 1973 the line was taken over by the Austrian Society for Railway History (ÖGEG), and later by the Club Florianerbahn society and a section of the line reactivated as a museum railway. As of 2008 there were no museum services because much of the route is not usable: between Pichling and Bruck the line runs under the Western motorway and had to be lifted whilst construction work is going on. The track has since been replaced, but the catenary is still missing. Between Pichling and Ebelsberg a large section of the overgrown tracks has been removed to build a ring road and has not been fully replaced. The museum's vehicle collection in St. Florian can be visited if notice is given.

The solarCity is an energy-saving living district in Linz-Pichling, Austria, which provides living space for about 4,000 people. The houses were built using a low-energy design. The idea and motivation for providing energy efficient living arrangements stems from the fact that fossil fuels contribute to global warming and that their use should therefore be avoided. Planning of the project began in 1992. Since 1999, 1,300 apartments were gradually built during a 6-year period. The total cost of the project amounted to 190 million euros. Nearly two-thirds of which was used for the residential building, and only a third of the total cost was due to infrastructure.

Weikerlsee is a pair of recreational lakes just south of the confluence of the Traun and the Danube in the urban district of Ebelsberg. It includes the bathing lake, a green belt, some parking spaces, toilets, a snack bar and a nudist area on the north bank of the smaller of the two lakes. A canal joins the smaller and the larger lakes. To the south of the Larger Weiklsee are the rainwater drainage basins for the Linz sewage network.

Traun (German: [ˈtʁaʊn] ) is a river in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. Its source is in the Totes Gebirge mountain range in Styria. It flows through the Salzkammergut area and the lakes Hallstätter See and Traunsee. The Traun is a right tributary of the Danube, which it meets near the city of Linz. Other towns along the river are Bad Aussee, Bad Ischl, Gmunden, Wels and Traun. The Traun is 155.9 km (96.9 mi) long, and has a basin area of 4,257 km2 (1,644 sq mi). Its average discharge at the mouth is 150 m3/s (5,300 cu ft/s).Until the late 19th century, it was only possible to reach Hallstatt (at the Hallstätter See) by boat or via narrow trails. However, this secluded and inhospitable landscape nevertheless counts as one of the first places of human settlement due to the rich sources of natural salt, which was mined for thousands of years, originally in the shape of hearts. Some of Hallstatt's oldest archaeological finds, such as a shoe-last celt – a long thin stone tool used to fell trees and to work wood – date back to around 5000 B.C. One of the first blacksmith's sites was excavated there. Active trade and thus wealth allowed for the development of a highly sophisticated society, hence the term Hallstatt culture. In 1846, a large prehistoric cemetery was discovered close by the current location of Hallstatt. There is little room for cemeteries so every ten years bones used to be exhumed and removed into an ossuary to make room for new burials. A collection of elaborately decorated skulls with the owners' names, professions, death dates inscribed on them is on display at the local chapel.

The Krems is an approximately 62-kilometre-long (39 mi) tributary of the Traun in Upper Austria. It originates at the foot of the mountain Kremsmauer in Micheldorf, runs northwards in the Traunviertel through the Upper Austrian Prealps, and flows into the Traun in Ebelsberg, a district of Linz. The largest towns in the valley of the Krems are Kirchdorf an der Krems, Schlierbach, Wartberg an der Krems, Kremsmünster, Rohr im Kremstal, Kematen an der Krems, Neuhofen an der Krems and Ansfelden.

Steyregg is a municipality in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung in the Austrian state of Upper Austria.

Hofkirchen Airfield (German: Flugplatz Hofkirchen, ICAO: LOLH) is a recreational aerodrome, 3 kilometres (2 mi) west of Hofkirchen im Traunkreis, Oberösterreich, Austria.

Voestalpine AG – stylized as voestalpine – is an Austrian steel-based technology and capital goods group based in Linz, Austria. The company is active in steel, automotive, railway systems, profilform and tool steel industries. As of 2017, it is one of the few profitable steel companies in Europe.45 percent of its workforce is based in Austria. The Linz hot strip mill is a "fully integrated steel works" operated by voestalpine Stahl GmbH, a part of the steel division of voestalpine AG. In addition to Linz the most important plants are in Leoben in Styria and in Krems in Lower Austria. It had a large plant at Liezen in Styria which closed in the 1990s. Voestalpine is responsible for 10% of all Austrian CO2 emissions, which makes it the biggest emitter in the country.The name of the company amalgamates its two principal components, the VÖEST (Vereinigte Österreichische Eisen und Stahlwerke) in Upper Austria, established through nationalization in July 1946, and the ÖAMG (Österreichische-Alpine Montangesellschaft) in Styria, established in 1881.

Luftenberg an der Donau is a municipality and small market town in the district of Perg in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. As of 2015, the town had 3,979 inhabitants.
