Dewsbury

Dewsbury railway station serves the town of Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, England. Situated 9.25 miles (15 km) south west of Leeds on the main line to Huddersfield and Manchester, the station was opened by the London and North Western Railway in 1848. The station is now managed by TransPennine Express, who provide trains to Leeds, Huddersfield, Manchester, York, Hull and Redcar Central. Northern Trains also serve the station with trains on the Calder Valley line.

Dewsbury bus station serves the town of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. The bus station is managed and owned by Metro (West Yorkshire PTE). The bus station is situated in Dewsbury town centre next to Aldams Road (A638 road) and can be accessed there and from South Street. The bus station was rebuilt in 1994 with a main passenger concourse and 19 bus stands.

Dewsbury Minster, the Minster Church of All Saints is the parish church in Dewsbury, Kirklees, West Yorkshire, England. It dates from the 13th century and was rebuilt in 1895. It is situated on Vicarage Road and Church Street in the centre of the town. In 1949 it gained Grade II* listed status. Dewsbury Parish Church was rededicated as a minster church in 1994. It is one of three churches in West Yorkshire to be given the honorific title "minster". The others are Halifax Minster and Leeds Minster.

Dewsbury Town Hall is a Victorian town hall that stands in front of the old marketplace in the centre of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade II listed building.

Dewsbury Central was the Great Northern station serving eastern Dewsbury in Yorkshire. It opened in 1874 and closed on 7 September 1964, although goods traffic continued along its route until 15 February 1965, after which the line serving the station was closed entirely. It is located to the east of Dewsbury railway station, which has remained open since. The station had a single large island platform with a glass roof accessed from below through an entrance on Crackenedge Lane. This entrance survives as part of the embankment, which after the closure of the railway had the A638 Dewsbury Ring Road built over it. As well as this, some sections of the nearby trackbed have been preserved and turned into a footpath.

The Dewsbury and Savile Ground was a cricket ground located in Savile Town, Dewsbury, England. It hosted 53 first class matches between 1867 and 1933. The first fixture saw Yorkshire play Cambridgeshire while Essex were the visitors in the final game held there. Yorkshire twice played the touring Australians at the ground and, in its earliest days, several first class 'All England' fixtures were held. Yorkshire twice passed 500, scoring 562 against Leicestershire in 1903 and 507 for 8 declared against Warwickshire in 1925. Yorkshire bowled Somerset out for 48 at the ground in 1900 and dismissed Sussex for 51 in 1894. Three double centuries were recorded, two by Herbert Sutcliffe (213 v Somerset in 1924 and 206 v Warwickshire the following year) while Crowther Charlesworth scored 206 for Warwickshire in 1914. Billy Williams took 9 for 29 for Yorkshire against Hampshire in 1919 and Tom Emmett 9 for 34 against Nottinghamshire in 1868. Bertram Harold Smithson, the father of Yorkshire and England cricketer Gerald Smithson, was cricket professional and head groundsman for Dewsbury & Savile CC in the early 1930s. The ground was abandoned in the 1990s after the incumbent club, Dewsbury & Savile CC, could not afford to renovate the classic pre-war pavilion to modern standards. The local council refused financial aid without a guarantee that the club, ground and adjoining football field could be used for the wider community. As a private club, Dewsbury refused. The ground reverted to the council. Dewsbury merged with Whitley Lower CC to become Hopton Mills CC. The ground ceased to be a cricket ground and became a general recreation ground. The pavilion was demolished.

Batley Carr was a Great Northern Railway station serving Batley Carr, Yorkshire. It had two side platforms, with the facilities on the northbound platform. It was accessed via Wood Lane, which was built with a kink to get around the facilities. This kink survives to this day.The station opened on 12 April 1880 and closed to passengers in March 1950.

The Markazi Masjid ("Central Mosque"), also known as the Dewsbury Markaz or Dar ul Ulum ("House of Knowledge"), is a mosque in the Savile Town area of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. With a maximum capacity of 4,000, it is one of the largest mosques in Europe. It is the European headquarters of the Tablighi Jamaat movement, and also houses one of the two main Islamic seminaries in the UK. The mosque serves as a centre for Tablighi Jamaat's missionary activity throughout Europe.It was also the location of the Institute of Islamic Education (Arabic: جامعات تعليم الإسلام, romanized: ‘Jāmi’at Ta’līm al-Islām), a private day and boarding faith school for boys aged 13–25 However the school formally closed in January 2023.Construction of the mosque commenced in 1978 and was completed in 1982; the seminary was founded in 1980. The founder of Dewsbury Markaz was Hafiz Patel, who remained its leading figurehead until his death in 2016.

Dewsbury and Batley is a constituency of the House of Commons in the UK Parliament, represented since 2024 by Iqbal Mohamed, an Independent. Further to the completion of the 2023 Periodic Review of Westminster constituencies, it was first contested in the 2024 general election. The constituency is located in the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire.

St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy (formerly St John Fisher Catholic High School) is a Roman Catholic Mixed Comprehensive in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. St John Fisher was opened in 1958 under the trusteeship of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Leeds to serve Catholics living in Dewsbury, Batley and the surrounding areas. It was reorganised in 1974 and the Sixth Form was added in 1979. The school, an 11–19 mixed Roman Catholic secondary school, has about 1200 pupils on roll, including 200 in the sixth form. It has also been a specialist Sports College since 2005. As of 2019 the school's headteacher is Richard Williams until August 2020 when Sarah Wilkinson will become head but now as of 2022 Jackie Rose is the temporary Head Teacher .

Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, England is a district partly in Dewsbury and partly in Batley, on the way to Dewsbury, along the A652, Bradford Road. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the population is about 3,740. Crime is around the national average.Batley Carr housed the workers from the mills of Dewsbury, Batley and Batley Carr. As the settlement expanded, with the growth of textiles, there was a necessity for its own railway station (Staincliffe and Batley Carr railway station). The red brick station master's house still stands but is now a private residence. However, Batley Carr has since dwindled in size and now only has a post office, a few shops (mainly takeaways) and some remaining factories including the British Beds haulage depot. It is near the nightclub 'The Frontier'. Public houses and working men's clubs are still popular. Shannon Matthews, who disappeared from Dewsbury Moor on 19 February 2008, was found alive on 14 March 2008 in Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr.
