Membury Castle

Membury is a village three miles north west of Axminster in East Devon district. The population at the 2011 Census was 501.The village has a 13th-century church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, with a tall slim tower. In the aisle there is a monument to Sir Shilston Calmady, who was killed in a skirmish near the village in February 1646, and was buried in the chancel. The founding editor of the medical journal, The Lancet, Thomas Wakley, was born at Membury in 1795. The village is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and lies just to the north east of Beckford Bridge over the River Yarty, which is the oldest packhorse bridge in East Devon. Near to the village there is former Quaker Meeting House that is now a hotel.

The parish was created in 1990 from part of the neighbouring parish of Chardstock.

The parish also contains the hamlets of Bewley Down, Birchill, Burridge, Holy City and Tytherleigh. The parish is a major part of the electoral ward of Yarty. The ward population at the above census was 2,361.The parish was in Dorset until 1896. Historically it formed part of Beaminster Forum and Redhone Hundred. The attractive village is surrounded by farmland and woodland and is within the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The River Kit runs through the village. The village church dates from the 19th Century. The village also has a post office and pub (currently closed). The collection of work by Artist Kenneth Butler Evans, cousin of poet William Butler Yeats, is based in the village at the home of his widow, sculptor Ann Ford.

St Mary's Church is a Church of England church in Axminster, Devon, England. The church has Norman origins, although much of the building dates from the 13th–15th centuries. St Mary's is Axminster's parish church and the oldest building in the town.St Mary's has been Grade II* Listed since 1950. The earliest surviving section of the church is a reset doorway from the Norman period, while the tower, rebuilt in the 13th century, was restored in 1896. The church suffered an arson attack in 2014, and underwent restoration and repair work before reopening in 2015.A World War I memorial is located in the churchyard. An obelisk with Perpendicular decorations, it has been Grade II Listed since 1983. It lists the names of 65 local men who lost their lives in the war, with a later addition of 19 names from World War II. An early 19th-century tomb chest, located by the churchyard's north east gate, is also Grade II Listed.

Axminster Museum is a town museum situated in the Old Police Station and Courthouse opposite St. Mary's Church in the centre of the town of Axminster, Devon, England. It was founded in 1982. The Old Court House was built in the 1860s on the site of the old workhouse. The two-storey stone building has five bays with three asymmetrical gables. The current main doorway was a carriage entrance. The building is a Grade II listed building.The collections include exhibits related to the town's carpet industry founded by Thomas Whitty in 1755. There are also agricultural tools, archaeological finds, Coins and Medals, Costumes and Textiles, old photographs, archives and occasional special exhibitions. It is also possible to see the old police cells and courtroom.In 2015 a grant of £69,700 was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the development of the museum and the nearby Thomas Whitty House as a heritage centre. The heritage centre opened in 2016 and many of the exhibits from the museum were moved into the new centre, based in the old carpet factory. It is hoped to obtain further funding for the renovation of the Drill Hall and Dye House.The building also houses the town's tourist information centre.
