Mount Pellegrino

The Sanctuary of Santa Rosalia is a church and pilgrimage site located on via Bonnaojust outside of the urban neighborhoods of Palermo, nestled against a stone cliff wall on Mount Pellegrino, which looms to the north of the Sicily city. On 15 July 1624, putative relics of this 12th century saint were discovered in a cave at the site, and since the plague ebbed after these bones were paraded through town, Saint Rosalia was adopted as the fourth female patron saint of Palermo, and this sanctuary was erected in her honor.

La Favorita Park (Italian: Parco della Favorita or Real Tenuta della Favorita) is a large city park in Palermo, Italy. Established in 1799 by Ferdinand III of Sicily, it has an overall area of 400 hectares (990 acres), and represent the biggest green area of Palermo. It is located at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, in the north-western part of the city.

Ippodromo della Favorita (English: La Favorita Hippodrome) is a horse racing venue in Palermo, Sicily, Italy built in 1953. It is located next to the Stadio Renzo Barbera in the southernmost part of Parco della Favorita, Palermo's largest urban park. Access to the venue is free of charge, it has a maximum audience capacity of 15,000, of which 2,500 places are seated. Adjacent to the hippodrome, various facilities can be found, such as 2 parking areas for visitors, a playground for children, as well as various restaurants. The hippodrome is divided in two areas: the actual racing track is 1,000 metres long and 25 metres wide, while the exercise track is located within the actual racing track and is 800 metres long. The stables sector has 400 placements for horses, as well as staff accommodation, a veterinary station, additional car parking and food stalls.

The 1999 IFAF World Championship was the inaugural IFAF World Championship, an international American football championship run by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). It was played in Palermo, Italy from 24 June to 4 July 1999. The tournament was contested by six nations and was won by Japan.

The Castello Utveggio is a monumental palace built between 1928 and 1933 on a promontory of Mount Pellegrino overlooking Palermo, Sicily. It was built in a Neogothic style resembling a castle with crenellated rooflines.

Villa Niscemi is a villa in Palermo. It is located in the north-western part of the city, near La Favorita Park.

Stadio Renzo Barbera (commonly known as La Favorita) is a football stadium in Palermo, Italy. It is currently the home stadium of Palermo F.C. team. The stadium was inaugurated during the fascist era on 24 January 1932, and was originally named Stadio Littorio after the Italian word for the fasces symbol. The opening match was Palermo vs Atalanta, with Palermo winning 5–1. A running track surrounded the pitch and there were no stands behind either goal. In 1936, the stadium was renamed Stadio Michele Marrone, in memory of a soldier killed during the Spanish Civil War. In 1945, the name was changed again at the end of World War II to Stadio La Favorita, taken from the name of the local ancient game preserve of Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor in the 13th century. In 1948, the running track was removed and stands behind each goal were built. The stadium then remained largely unchanged until 1984, when the second main redevelopment took place involving the addition of a second tier to the stadium, which increased total capacity to 50,000 spectators. This maximum capacity was, however, only reached twice: in a Serie C1 league match against Sicilian rivals Messina, and for a friendly match against Juventus. A third, and to date the most recent, modernisation of the stadium took place in 1990, due to city of Palermo having been chosen to host a number of the 1990 FIFA World Cup First Round matches. A tragic accident occurred during the course of these works, resulting in the deaths of five construction workers. Following this redevelopment, the total capacity of the stadium was lowered to its current 37,619 seats. On 18 September 2002 the stadium was officially renamed as Stadio Comunale Renzo Barbera, in honour of the chairman of Palermo during the club's last Serie A tenure, as well as the two Coppa Italia finals throughout the 1960s and the 1970s, who had died that same year on 19 May. In the Serie A 2004-05 campaign, which marked Palermo's first appearance in the top division for over 30 years, all seats in the stadium were already sold before the season began to season-ticket holders. However, this was not repeated in the next years.

Palermo Football Club (Italian pronunciation: [paˈlɛrmo] ) is an Italian professional football club based in Palermo, Sicily, that currently plays in Serie B. It is part of the City Football Group. Founded for the first time on 1 November 1900 as Anglo Palermitan Athletic and Football Club, Palermo is one of the oldest clubs in Italy. Among the club's accomplishments are a Coppa Italia Serie C, won in the 1992–93, and five Serie B league titles. It also appeared in three Coppa Italia finals: in 1973–74, in 1978–79 and in 2010–11; and played 29 seasons in Serie A. Internationally, the club has made five appearances in European competitions, all in the UEFA Cup/Europa League.

The Chinese Palace (Italian: Palazzina Cinese), also known as Real Casina alla Cinese, is a former royal residence of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies designed in the style of Chinoiserie. It is located in Palermo, inside the park of La Favorita. The Ethnographic Museum of Sicily, named after Giuseppe Pitrè, is located in one of the Palace's guesthouse.

The Sicilian Ethnographic Museum Giuseppe Pitrè (Italian: Museo Etnografico Siciliano Giuseppe Pitrè) is a museum in Palermo, Italy.The museum has two locations: the main part is located in one of the Palazzina Cinese's guesthouse, inside La Favorita Park, and another is in the Albergaria quarter, within the historic centre of Palermo. The museum was founded by the scholar Giuseppe Pitrè in 1909 and is named after him. It houses a rich library containing more than 30,000 volumes and provides many types of documentation about Sicilian culture, traditions and folklore.

The Addaura cave (Italian: Grotta dell'Addaura) is a complex of three natural grottoes located on the northeast side of Mount Pellegrino in Palermo, Sicily, Southern Italy. The importance of the complex is due to the presence of cave-wall engravings dated to the late Epigravettian (contemporaneous with the Magdalenian) and the Mesolithic. On the side of Mount Pellegrino, overlooking Palermo, to the southeast of Mondello beach at 70 metres (230 ft) above sea level, there are some open grottoes and cavities where bones and tools used for hunting have been found, attesting the presence of humans who lived in them beginning in the Paleolithic and into the Mesolithic. The finds are now conserved in Palermo's Regional Archaeological Museum. Their importance is mainly due to the presence of an extraordinary complex of rock engravings that decorate the walls, constituting a unique case in the panorama of prehistoric cave art. The name Addaura comes from Arabic: الدورة al-dawrah, 'the circuit'.

The via D'Amelio bombing (Italian: Strage di via D'Amelio) was a terrorist attack by the Sicilian Mafia, which took place in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, on 19 July 1992. It killed Paolo Borsellino, the anti-mafia Italian magistrate, and five members of his police escort: Agostino Catalano, Emanuela Loi (the first Italian female member of a police escort and the first to be killed on duty), Vincenzo Li Muli, Walter Eddie Cosina, and Claudio Traina.The so-called agenda rossa, the red notebook in which Borsellino used to write down details of his investigations and which he always carried with him, disappeared from the site in the moments after the explosion. A carabinieri officer who was present when the explosion occurred reported he had delivered the notebook to Giuseppe Ayala, the first Palermo magistrate to arrive at the scene. Ayala, who said he had refused to receive it, was later criticized for saying escorts to anti-mafia judges should be reduced, despite evidence of further failed attempts to kill them in subsequent years.
