Broome, Shropshire

Broome railway station serves the villages of Broome and Aston on Clun in Shropshire, England. It is on the Heart of Wales Line 22+3⁄4 miles (36.6 km) south west of Shrewsbury. Trains that serve the station are operated by Transport for Wales.

Aston on Clun is a village in south Shropshire, England. It lies near to the River Clun, with the brook from Hopesay flowing through the village itself, and is on the B4368 road between the towns of Clun and Craven Arms. The village of Broome, which has a railway station, is also close by. It is in the civil parish of Hopesay.

Clungunford is a village and civil parish in south Shropshire, England, located near the border with Herefordshire.

Abcott is a hamlet in south Shropshire, England. It lies on the west side of the River Clun and its flood plain, just opposite from the village of Clungunford, which is the parish the hamlet is part of. The B4367 road crosses the Clun (at Clungunford Bridge) and passes the hamlet, on its way between Clungunford and Bucknell. A lane connects the B4367 at Abcott and Twitchen. The famous Rocke Cottage tea rooms is situated on the B road at Abcott (formerly the Bird on the Rock tea rooms, and historically the Rocke Arms public house). Abcott Manor is a Grade II* ("two star") Listed building.Abcott was a medieval township, despite its proximity to the parish's main village and parish church (St Cuthbert's) just on the other side of the Clun. The 740 bus service calls at Abcott, outside the tea rooms, with three buses a day to Ludlow and Knighton. Nearby is Hopton Heath, which has a railway station on the Heart of Wales Line, which passes by the hamlet.

Hopesay is a small village, and civil parish, in south Shropshire, England. The population of the parish at the 2011 census was 561.The name 'Hopesay' derives from "Hope de Say", the valley of Picot de Say, a Norman baron who held the manor of neighbouring Sibdon Carwood and whose power base was the nearby Clun Castle. Though most of the Norman influence has been lost, the church tower does date back to Norman times. The 13th-century church of St Mary, restored c.1880, is a Grade I listed building. The village has an active community though in recent decades has suffered from depopulation, leading to the closure of both the village shop and Post office, and the school (closed in 1989). Within the parish lies the larger village of Aston on Clun, and the village of Broome which has a railway station on the Heart of Wales Line. The hamlet of Basford, in the north of the parish, straddles the boundary with Edgton parish. The writer and adventurer Vivienne de Watteville (Vivienne Goschen) is buried at Hopesay.

St Mary's Church is in the village of Hopesay, Shropshire, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Clun Forest, the archdeaconry of Ludlow, and the diocese of Hereford. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Shelderton is a hamlet in south Shropshire, England. It is located just southeast of the village of Clungunford and is part of that village's civil parish.It was a medieval township and belonged to Munslow hundred.The border with Herefordshire is nearby to the south. The small hamlet of Little Common is near to Shelderton, on the B4367 road, and is connected with Shelderton by a footpath (grid reference SO398776). Also on the B4367, near to where the Leintwardine lane from Shelderton meets the B4367, is a Grade II Listed house called The Lynches (grid reference SO396769).The nearest market towns are Craven Arms and Ludlow. A Roman road runs through Shelderton, on its way between the Roman fort and settlement at Leintwardine and the city at Wroxeter. There is a Royal Mail post box in the hamlet.

Beckjay is a hamlet in the south of the English county of Shropshire. Its name, and that of the nearby hamlet of Jay (about 1+1⁄2 miles (2.4 km) south), is probably a reference to the family of Elias de Jay, who held the local manor of Bedston until 1349. A relative of this family, Brian de Jay, was the last recorded master of the English Knights Templar. Forming part of the civil parish of Clungunford, Beckjay is close to the border with Herefordshire on the west bank of the River Clun. It was a medieval township. Nearby are the hamlets of Hopton Heath, which has a railway station on the Heart of Wales Line, and Broadward with its 18th-century hall. There is a Royal Mail post box in the hamlet. The settlement also features a house with a thatched-roof. A duck pond exists just to the south of the settlement, downhill from it. The former Beckjay Mill (situated to the northeast of the hamlet, on the Clun) was the subject of several paintings by David Cox.

Burrow is a hill in Shropshire with an Iron Age hill fort at the summit known as Burrow Camp. The nearest villages are Hopesay and Aston-on-Clun. It includes a large number of hut platforms, and two natural springs.At 15:45 on 13 September 1943 a Vickers Wellington crashed on the hill. The flight was part of a cross-country and practice bombing exercise from RAF Chipping Warden, Northamptonshire. The crew encountered a severe thunderstorm above south Shropshire and was seen to be struck by lightning while flying over Lydbury North causing the plane to catch fire and lose height before disintegrating on the hilltop killing all eight crew members.
