Warnow Tunnel

The Frieden (known in German as the Traditionsschiff Typ Frieden) is the former German motor vessel Dresden operated by the VEB Deutsche Seereederei Rostock. Since 1970 it has been used as a museum ship. The Dresden was built in 1956/57 at the Warnow Shipyard. It was the fifth Type IV ship in the first batch of 10,000 tonne piece-goods freighters that were built in East Germany's shipyards after the Second World War. Because the first ship of this series was christened Frieden (commissioned in June 1957), the other ships of this series of 15 new vessels were classed as Frieden type merchant ships. On 27 July 1958 the ship was handed over to the Deutsche Seereederei shipping line and it operated until 1969 on scheduled services to East Asia, Indonesia, Africa, India and Latin America. After some serious defects that were found in the engine room that would have resulted in excessive repair costs, the ship was decommissioned in 1969 and opened on 13 June 1970 as the "Rostock Shipbuilding Museum" (Schiffbaumuseum Rostock). Part of the ship also acted as a youth hostel for a time. Today it is part of the Rostock Shipbuilding and Shipping Museum (Rostocker Schiffbau- und Schifffahrtsmuseum) in the IGA Park and contains comprehensive exhibitions of shipbuilding history. Topics include Shipbuilding in East Germany, Shipyard Operations, the History of Maritime Radio Communications and Navigation. In addition, there is a collection of various types of ship engine. Many areas of the ship have been preserved in their original state (the engine room, bridge, radio station, ship's hospital and crew cabins) and give an impression of life on a merchant ship in the 1950/60s. The Rostock City Harbour Museum Ship action group (Traditionsschiff Stadthafen Rostock) is advocating moving the shipyard and shipping museum to a central and easily accessible site in the centre of Rostock. Low visitor numbers have been cited as the reason for this initiative.

Marienehe Charterhouse, also sometimes referred to as Rostock Charterhouse (German: Kartause Marienehe, Kartause Himmelszinnen or Kartause Rostock), was a Carthusian monastery, or charterhouse, in Marienehe, now a suburb of Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The estate of Marienehe was bought in 1393 by the Rostock merchant and statesman Winold Baggel or Baggele, who in 1396 (1396), when he was Bürgermeister of Rostock, together with his father-in-law, Matthias von Borken, founded the charterhouse here. The monastery was noted for the extent to which it favoured university education for its monks and the mystical writings the community produced, particularly under the priors Heinrich Eler, Vicco Dessin and Heinrich von Ribnitz. The community, under the leadership of Marquardt or Markwart (von) Behr, the last prior, vehemently resisted the imposition of Lutheranism during the Reformation and the monastery had to be dissolved forcibly by 300 armed men on 15 March 1552 (1552-03-15), after which it was demolished and used as a quarry. The stone was mostly put to use in the construction of Schloss Güstrow. There are no visible remains. The site was later used for the construction of the Heinkel works, and after the war for the Rostock Fischkombinat ("fishery centre"). A block of flats now stands here.

Unterwarnow is the estuary of the Warnow River in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, northern Germany. Connected with the Baltic Sea in Warnemünde. On the coasts of the estuary, the city of Rostock is located.

From August 22 to August 24, 1992 violent xenophobic riots took place in the Lichtenhagen district of Rostock, Germany; these were the worst mob attacks against migrants in postwar Germany. Stones and petrol bombs were thrown at an apartment block where asylum seekers lived. At the height of the riots, several hundred militant right-wing extremists were involved, and about 3,000 neighbourhood onlookers stood by, applauding them.The initial response of authorities and politicians was heavily criticised. For some days prior to the riots, veiled warnings of impending trouble had been posted in some newspapers. Police and politicians seemed reluctant to respond, and, when they did, their responses were considered inadequate. Outside the building where the refugees were housed, several hundred asylum seekers had been camping for days with little or no access to basic facilities. This was contributing to escalating tensions in the neighbourhood. Between 22 and 26 August 1992, there were 370 provisional arrests and 408 preliminary investigations related to the riots. Among the arrested were 110 people from the former West Germany; 217 from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, including 147 from Rostock; and another 37 from the former East Germany. During the riot, 204 police officers were injured. No one was killed.

Warnemünde (German pronunciation: [vaʁnəˈmʏndə] , literally Mouth of the Warnow) is a seaside resort and a district of the city of Rostock in Mecklenburg, Germany. It is located on the Baltic Sea and, as the name implies, at the estuary of the river Warnow. Warnemünde is one of the world's busiest cruise ports.

The Rostock Art Gallery (German: Kunsthalle Rostock) was opened on 15 May 1969 as a museum of contemporary art in Rostock in the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is in the grounds of the park around the Schwanenteich lake in the quarter of Reutershagen.

The Hanseatic University (HU) in Rostock-Warnemünde was a private university in Rostock, Germany. Founded in 2007, it was the second private institution of higher education in Germany to be granted university status by the government. In August 2008, when it had three students, it ceased activities, and it finally closed down March 2009.

Rostock Power Station is a bituminous coal-fired combined heat and power plant operated by Kraftwerks- und Netzgesellschaft mbH (KNG), located in Rostock, Germany. Construction on the plant began in June 1991, and test firing and grid connection were carried out from March to September, 1994. In October of that year it entered normal service. In addition to a generating capacity of 553 MWe, the station also feeds the Rostock district heating net. A notable feature of the Rostock Power Station is that the 160 metre tall cooling tower also serves as chimney.

The Breitling is a roughly 2,500 metre wide bodden-like opening in the lower Warnow just before its mouth on the Baltic Sea in Germany. Its north to south extent is about 1,500 metres. The Breitling is only linked to the Baltic itself through a narrow access channel in Warnemünde, the Seekanal . For these reasons the Breitling is a perfect natural harbour. On the Baltic side the Breitling is bordered by the Rostock quarter of Hohe Düne. On its southern shore is Rostock Harbour, on the northern shore the port of the German Navy. This is where their corvette squadron and the 7th Fast Patrol Boat squadron is based. In front of Hohe Düne, separated only by the Pinnengraben ditch, lies the uninhabited island of Pagenwerder which has been artificially enlarged by dredging. The island is a protected area and bird nesting site. On the eastern shore, the edge of the Rostock Heath is the historic tourist restaurant of Schnatermann with a small sports boat harbour. In the 1950/60s there were plans for the Breitling was to be linked via the Coast Canal with the Stettin Lagoon. This project was only partly realised, however, due to high costs. In autumn 2005 the first offshore wind generator in Germany was built in the Breitling. The wind turbine was erected by the firm of Nordex, based in Rostock, and went into operation in 2006. Include the rotor it measures 90 metres in diameter, is 125 metres high and has a nominal rating of 2.5 Megawatts.

Warnemünde station is located in the seaside resort of Warnemünde, a district of the Hanseatic city of Rostock in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The station opened on 30 September 1903 and is located on the Neustrelitz–Warnemünde railway. It is the terminus of all three Rostock S-Bahn lines. In addition, some long-distance trains serve the station. Until 1995, it was the starting point of ferries to Gedser in Denmark. The station building and some other facilities of the station have heritage protection.

Warnemünde Church is a neogothic building in Warnemünde, which is a part of the hanseatic city of Rostock. Construction of the current brick building began in 1866 and the church was consecrated in 1871. The church of Warnemünde stands for over one hundred years in the middle of the town and is the center of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation. For the community along with many guests it is a place of rest and prayer. But it has also even given protection from flooding. The maritime atmosphere is shown by the special votive ships inside.

The Botanischer Garten Universität Rostock (7.8 hectares), also known as the Botanischer Garten Rostock, is a botanical garden and arboretum maintained by the University of Rostock. It is adjacent to the university sports fields along Hans-Sachs Allee, Rostock, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, and open daily except Monday in the warmer months. The university has maintained a botanical garden continuously since 1885. Its original location was on Doberaner Straße, but as expansion proved impossible, today's site was developed from 1935 to 1939. In 2009 a new tropical house was opened, named in honor of botanist Loki Schmidt. Today the garden cultivates nearly 10,000 plants representing about 5,000 taxa. It is organized into the following major sections: alpine garden, arboretum, dune habitat, forest, healing and aromatic plants, pond, systematic garden (about 340 species in 48 beds, each 8 m2), vegetable and ornamental plants. Its greenhouses contain aquatic plants, crops, ferns, orchids, and succulents. The garden's herbarium contains nearly 80,000 specimens representing about 20,000 families. Its core holdings were accumulated by Prof. Johannes A.C. Roeper (1801-1885) between 1836-1882 and include collections from Heinrich Gustav Flörke (1764–1835), Adelbert von Chamisso (1781–1838), and Ferdinand von Mueller (1825-1896).
