Chemnitz (German: [ˈkɛmnɪts] (listen); from 1953 to 1990: Karl-Marx-Stadt [kaʁlˈmaʁksˌʃtat] (listen), lit. 'Karl Marx City') is the third-largest city in the German state of Saxony after Leipzig and Dresden. It is the 28th largest city of Germany as well as the fourth largest city in the area of former East Germany after (East) Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. The city is part of the Central German Metropolitan Region, and lies in the middle of a string of cities sitting in the densely populated northern foreland of the Elster and Ore Mountains, stretching from Plauen in the southwest via Zwickau, Chemnitz and Freiberg to Dresden in the northeast. Located in the Ore Mountain Basin, the city is surrounded by the Ore Mountains to the south and the Central Saxon Hill Country to the north. The city stands on the Chemnitz River (progression: Zwickauer Mulde→ Mulde→ Elbe→ North Sea), which is formed through the confluence of the rivers Zwönitz and Würschnitz in the borough of Altchemnitz. The name of the city as well as the names of the rivers are of Slavic origin. Chemnitz is the third largest city in the Thuringian-Upper Saxon dialect area after Leipzig and Dresden. The city's economy is based on the service sector and manufacturing industry. Chemnitz University of Technology has around 10,000 students. Chemnitz will be the European Capital of Culture of 2025.

The Battle of Chemnitz (14 April 1639) took place near the town of Chemnitz, in what is now eastern Germany, during the Thirty Years' War. Swedish forces under Johan Banér inflicted a crushing defeat on Rodolfo Giovanni Marazzino who commanded the Saxons and an Imperial detachment.

The Chemnitz tramway network (German: Straßenbahnnetz Chemnitz) is a network of tramways forming the centrepiece of the public transport system in Chemnitz, a city in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. Opened in 1880 as a horsecar system, the network was converted to an electrically powered system between 1893 and 1898. The network's gauge, originally 914 mm (3 ft), was widened to 925 mm (3 ft 13⁄32 in) by the outbreak of World War I. From the 1950s, the gauge was widened further, to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8+1⁄2 in) standard gauge, although the gauge conversion work was not completed until as late as 1988. The infrastructure is currently operated by the Chemnitzer Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft (CVAG), and services are operated by them and City-Bahn Chemnitz. The system is integrated in the Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS). The city used Czechoslovak Tatra T3 trams (Tatra T3D and Tatra B3D) from 1969 until they were all decommissioned by 2019. Some were sold to Kazakhstan and Russia. In 1993, the city began using Stadler Variobahn, originally built by ABB (ASEA Brown Boveri, now made by Stadler). In 2019, new Škoda 35 T trams were delivered to the city.

The Chemnitz petrified forest is a petrified forest in Chemnitz, Germany. Most of the trunks are exhibited in the Museum of Natural History in Chemnitz inside of Kulturkaufhaus Tietz , including slices of trunks with polished edges. A small collection can be seen also on Zeißstraße (Hilbersdorf, 1911). From April 4, 2008, to Fall 2011, an excavation in Hilbersdorf was held to find and research more trunks. Their researchers discovered, amongst others, Arthropitys bistriata, a type of Calamites, giant horsetails that are ancestors of modern horsetails, found on this location with never seen multiple branches. Many more plants and animals from this excavation are still in an ongoing research. This exceptional find received the 2010 Fossil of the Year award of the German Paleontological Society. It was integrated into the permanent exhibition.

The Kulturkaufhaus Tietz is a cultural centre in Chemnitz, sometimes also called Cultural Department Store. In 1913 the house was built by Wilhelm Kreis. During World War II it was used as a department store by the Kaufhaus Tietz (Department Store of Tietz). In the 1990s the label Kaufhof had a shopping centre there. After a massive restoration of the building, in 2004 it was re-opened as "DAStietz". Since then it contains some shops (e.g. a bakery, a Fair Trade Shop, a bookshop and so on). Also the City Library of Chemnitz and the adult evening classes of the city, the Museum for Natural Education and the New Saxonian Gallery are located there. The store's courtyard contains specimens from the Chemnitz petrified forest (largest plant fossil in Europe). Since 2020 a Stefan-Heym-exhibition is presented ("Stefan-Heym-Forum"). Stefan Heym (1913-2001) born in Chemnitz, was a German writer.

The Karl Marx Monument (German: Karl-Marx-Monument) is a 7.10m (23.29ft)-tall stylized head of Karl Marx in Chemnitz, Germany. The heavy-duty sculpture, together with the base platform, stand over 13 meters (42 feet) tall and weighs approximately 40 tonnes. On a wall just behind the monument, the phrase "Workers of the world, unite!" (from the Communist Manifesto) is inscripted in four languages: German, English, French and Russian. It is the most famous monument in the inner city of Chemnitz, where it has gained the nickname "Nischel", which is derived from the Saxon term for head or skull.

Chemnitz Süd (south) station is a station in the city of Chemnitz in the German state of Saxony. The station used to have a greater significance in freight transport in particular. It is located at the Dresden–Werdau railway as a halt and at the Chemnitz–Adorf railway as a railway station where the Zwönitz–Chemnitz Süd railway branches off.

Kaßberg is the most densely populated neighbourhood within the German city of Chemnitz (the third largest city in the state of Saxony) and belongs to the largest Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau neighbourhoods in Germany. It is near the Chemnitz River and is to the west of the Chemnitz city centre. Its highest point is about 30 metres above the level of the city centre.

Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof is the main railway station in Chemnitz in Germany.

The Parkeisenbahn Chemnitz (PEC) is a narrow gauge children's railway in Chemnitz, Saxony, Germany. It is 2.3 kilometres long and has one station, two stops, one depot and one block post. Until 1990 it was operated as a Pioniereisenbahn. The Parkeisenbahn has six diesel locomotives, two steam locomotives, nine passenger wagons and some other vehicles. It has the route number 12248. With the exception of the engine driver and the station master, all jobs around the railway are done by children and teenagers.

Chemnitz University of Technology (German: Technische Universität Chemnitz) is a public university in Chemnitz, Germany. With over 9,000 students, it is the third largest university in Saxony. It was founded in 1836 as Königliche Gewerbschule (Royal Mercantile College) and was elevated to a Technische Hochschule, a university of technology, in 1963. With approximately 1,500 employees in science, engineering and management, Chemnitz University of Technology is among the most important employers in the region.

The Chemnitz Linux Days (German: Chemnitzer Linux-Tage), are an annual event focusing on Linux and free (libre) software in general. It takes place in the auditory and seminar building of Chemnitz University of Technology (German: Technische Universität Chemnitz / TU Chemnitz) in the federal state of Saxony, in the south-east of Germany. There are talks, project booths (both by community projects and by enterprises in the FOSS market), workshops, install parties, child care and playful educational lectures for the younger visitors, as well as technical help desks (Doctor Tux office). Both talks and workshops are held in German; some are also held in English, and they cover a broad variety of topics for professionals as well as entry-level visitors.
