Canidelo is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia. The population in 2011 was 27,769, in an area of 8.93 km². It is located along the mouth of Douro river and the Atlantic Ocean, across from Foz do Douro, Porto, some of the most important portuguese figures wore born here, such as Rui Manuel Gonçalves Moreira , Tono Dracúla e Tony Tachão. Some of the most important portuguese drug dealers wore also from Canidelo.

Valadares is a former civil parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Gulpilhares e Valadares. The population in 2011 was 10,678, in an area of 5.14 km2.Today the shoreside vicinity is very popular for its nightlife and the bars along its well-known beach. It is also possible to see some old sanatoriums used mostly in the 1940s and 1950s to treat people suffering from bone fractures and diseases like tuberculosis. The sanatoriums were established here because the region is extremely rich in iodine, valuable for its antiseptic uses in medicine. Valadares is also very famous for Cerâmica de Valadares that today it is considered the biggest and most varied National Manufacture provider of sanitary ware and ceramic fittings. There is a train station.

Gulpilhares e Valadares is a civil parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Gulpilhares and Valadares. The population in 2011 was 22,019, in an area of 10.61 km².

São Pedro da Afurada (or simply Afurada) is a former civil parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Santa Marinha e São Pedro da Afurada. The population in 2011 was 3,568, in an area of 1.00 km².It is an urban parish in the city of Gaia. Afurada is located near the mouth of the Douro river, where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is a traditional fishing village and was created as such. Its patron saint is Saint Peter, hence the name São Pedro, the equivalent in Portuguese. Afurada's people seem to be very devoted to St. Peter and every year there is a religious holiday in St. Peter's name (on 29 June), where people make processions, pray, and party throughout the night. It is customary for people to eat sardines in that week, baked with the typical Broa de Avintes, a type of corn bread made in the nearby village of Avintes. There is plenty of fireworks too. During religious processions people carry the images of saints, sometimes in real size, for other people to worship and make offerings to the saints. People usually dress in their traditional fishermen and fisherwomen clothes to pay respect for their patron saint, Peter. Other popular saints include Our Lady the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Fátima, Our Lady of Carmo, and St. Michael the Archangel, images of which are placed at the centre of the village. However, St. Peter's image is central at this place, the former location of a church in his name that was destroyed in a flood.

Vilar do Paraíso is a former civil parish in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. In 2013, the parish merged into the new parish Mafamude e Vilar do Paraíso. The population in 2011 was 13,878, in an area of 5.30 km².

The Douro (UK: , US: , Portuguese: [ˈdo(w)ɾu]; Spanish: Duero [ˈdweɾo]; Latin: Durius) is the highest-flow river of the Iberian Peninsula. It rises near Duruelo de la Sierra in Soria Province, central Spain, meanders south briefly then flows generally west through the north-west part of central Spain and into northern Portugal, to its mouth at Porto, the second largest city of Portugal. At its mouth it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The river is notable for the scenic Douro railway line, tourism more generally and – relatedly – the creation and production of port – a mildly fortified wine –, grapes, conventional wines and other agricultural produce. A small tributary of the river has the Côa Valley Paleolithic Art site which is considered important to the archaeological pre-historic patrimony, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within Spain, it flows through the middle of the autonomous community of Castile and León, with the basin spanning through the northern half of the Meseta Central. The latter includes wine producing areas such as the Ribera del Duero DOP.

It was formed in 2013 by the merger of the former parishes Santa Marinha and São Pedro da Afurada. The population in 2011 was 33,714, in an area of 6.91 km². It contains the city centre of Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Lighthouse of São Miguel-o-Anjo (Portuguese: Farol de São Miguel-o-Anjo) is a former hermitage and 16th century lighthouse, in the civil parish of Aldoar, Foz do Douro e Nevogilde, municipality of Porto, in the Portuguese Norte Region. The lighthouse of São Miguel-o-Anjo is Portugal's oldest existing lighthouse and one of the oldest in Europe. Designed by Italian architect Francesco da Cremona, the project was completed in 1538.

The Porto Tram Museum (Museu do Carro Eléctrico) is a museum operated by the Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto. It was inaugurated in 1992 and is installed in a former thermoelectric power station next to the River Douro in Massarelos, Porto, Portugal. It exhibits material related to the history of trams in Porto. The collection contains 16 electric cars, 5 trailers, and two maintenance vehicles as well as the former equipment of the power plant, which provided electricity for the tram lines.

The Centro de Astrofísica da Universidade do Porto (Centre for Astrophysics of the University of Porto - CAUP) is the largest astronomy research institute in Portugal, with more than 60 people. Since 2000 it has been evaluated as Excellent by international panels, organized under the auspices of the national science foundation (Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia - FCT), which was created in May 1989 by the Universidade do Porto.
