Along with First Brother Island, closer to the Belmont shore, it is sometimes referred to as Second Brother Island.

Newport lies along the Ohio River several miles above the county seat of Marietta. Today its main street is designated as State Route 7. The population of the CPD was 895 at the 2020 census. Newport is the location of the Carpenter Bridge, which carries State Route 807 over the Ohio River. It is the first bridge over the Ohio River above Marietta.

The Willow Island disaster was the collapse of a cooling tower under construction at the Pleasants Power Station at Willow Island, West Virginia, on April 27, 1978. 51 construction workers were killed. It is thought to be the deadliest construction accident in U.S. history.
