Independence Temple

The Independence Visitors' Center (dedicated on May 31, 1971) is a visitors' center owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in Independence, Missouri. The center is situated on the Greater Temple Lot dedicated and purchased by Joseph Smith and his associates in 1831, only a few yards from the Church of Christ (Temple Lot)'s headquarters and the Community of Christ temple.

The Temple Lot, located in Independence, Missouri, is the first site to be dedicated for the construction of a temple in the Latter Day Saint movement. The area was dedicated on August 3, 1831, by the movement's founder, Joseph Smith. It was purchased on December 19, 1831, by Edward Partridge to be the center of the New Jerusalem or "City of Zion" after Smith said he received a revelation stating that it would be the gathering spot of the Latter Day Saints during the last days.The most prominent 2.5-acre (1.0 ha) section of the Temple Lot is currently an open, grass-covered field occupied in its northeast corner by a few trees and the headquarters of the Church of Christ (Temple Lot), which is not considered a temple by adherents of that sect. No other structures (with the exception of monuments, markers and signposts) exist on the 2.5-acre (1.0 ha) section, although numerous important structures exist on the 63.5-acre (25.7 ha) section, such as the United Nations Peace Plaza, the Community of Christ Auditorium, the Truman Railroad Depot, the LDS Visitors Center, the Community of Christ Temple, a stake center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), and the Six Nations Tree of Peace.

The Community of Christ Stone Church (known from 1888 to 2000 as the RLDS Stone Church) is a historic place of worship at 1012 West Lexington Avenue in Independence, Missouri, United States. The limestone building is north across the street from the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) headquarters and diagonally opposite the Community of Christ Temple. The Church began construction on the site in 1884, and the completed building was dedicated on April 6, 1888. From the early 1900s until the dedication of the Community of Christ Auditorium in 1958, the Stone Church was the headquarters building of the RLDS Church. Administrative offices and General Conference meetings were transferred in 1958 to the Auditorium, and in 1994 to the Temple after 1994. The structure is still in use today as a regular congregational meeting location and community outreach programs.

The Auditorium (formerly the RLDS Auditorium) is a house of worship and office building located on the greater Temple Lot in Independence, Missouri. The Auditorium is part of the headquarters complex of Community of Christ which also includes the Independence Temple.

The United Nations Peace Plaza in Independence, Missouri, was unveiled on October 27, 1997, formally dedicated by U.N. General Secretary Kofi Annan on April 25, 2003, and is described by its creators as "the only memorial in the world to those persons serving in the Peacekeeping Forces of the United Nations". The 12.5-foot statue is named "Girl with Dove" by its sculptor, Tom Corbin, and in 2003, a four-foot miniature was gifted to the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.On December 11, 2006, after his final speech as Secretary-General, delivered at the Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri, Annan visited the Peace Plaza for a wreath-laying ceremony.

The Remnant Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, usually referred to as the Remnant Church, is a denomination in the Latter Day Saint movement. The prophet / president of the church is Terry W. Patience.

The Harry S. Truman National Historic Site (officially styled without the period after the S) preserves the longtime home of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd president of the United States, as well as other properties associated with him in the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area. The site is operated by the National Park Service, with its centerpieces being the Truman Home in Independence and the Truman Farm Home in Grandview. It also includes the Noland home of Truman's cousins, and the George and Frank Wallace homes of Bess Truman's brothers. The site was designated a National Historic Site on May 23, 1983.

Truman Road, Truman, or 15th Street is a major east/west road in Jackson County, Missouri. It serves Kansas City, Missouri, Independence, and eastern unincorporated Jackson County. Its western terminus is at Broadway Boulevard and I-670 in downtown Kansas City, and its eastern terminus is at the Jackson/Lafayette County line when concurrent with Route FF, north of Oak Grove. It is named after Harry S. Truman, the 33rd U.S. President, and runs through his hometown of Independence. Leaving Kansas City to the east, Truman Road follows Route 12 from Interstate 435, which was originally called Blue Avenue, after the Blue River and Blue Summit unincorporated community which it passed, then to an intersection with Spring Street on the Independence Square, .. Along this stretch is Van Horn High School, the Maywood Business District, and The Truman home. Truman Road east of Route 291 in Independence was originally called Spring Branch Road, after the nearby creek. Out here is an intersection with Route 78/Lake City-Buckner Road, as well as a bridge crossing over the Little Blue River. With the proposed extensions of Jackson Drive and the Little Blue Parkway north of 39th Street as well as future development, this stretch of Truman Road is due for upgrades, such as converting from two lanes to four. 15th Street, Blue Avenue, and Spring Branch Road were later renamed "Van Horn Road" for Robert T. Van Horn, in his honor, who purchased the newspaper The Enterprise in 1856 and renamed it The Kansas City Journal, was a member of the board of aldermen in 1857; postmaster of Kansas City 1857–1861; elected Kansas City mayor for three terms in 1861, 1863, and 1864. The Truman Road corridor is served by two principal tax exempt entities and is serviced by the City of Kansas City, MO, with other sub-organizational entities in sections along the corridor. The Truman Road Community Improvement District (CID) is a 501(c)(4) non-profit dedicated to investing in community infrastructure and improvements along the corridor as a sub-governmental entity largely tasked with common areas in and/or surrounding East Truman Road. The East Truman Road corridor as a whole is a major thoroughfare on the Eastern side of Downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

Independence station, also known as Missouri Pacific Depot, is an Amtrak train station in Independence, Missouri, United States. The station was originally built in 1913 by the Missouri Pacific Railroad, and is also known as the "Truman Depot", because it was the final stop in Harry S. Truman's 1948 Whistlestop Campaign where 8,500 admirers welcomed Truman in January 1953 when he returned home after leaving office. Today, the depot is an Amtrak stop and is said to be home to the Jackson County Genealogical Society Research Library. The station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Center Place Restoration School is a private K-12 in Independence, Missouri, in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Opened in 1991, the school is associated with the Restoration Branches movement formed in the 1980s by members of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS, now the Community of Christ).

The Harry S. Truman Historic District is a National Historic Landmark District encompassing sites closely associated with US President Harry S. Truman in Independence, Missouri. It includes the Truman Home at 219 North Delaware, Truman's home for much of his adult life and now a centerpiece of the Harry S. Truman National Historic Site, and the Truman Presidential Library. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1974. When first listed, the district included only the two buildings and a corridor joining them. It was substantially enlarged in 2011 to include more sites and the environment in which Truman operated while living in Independence.

The Church of Jesus Christ (Cutlerite) is a denomination of the Latter Day Saint movement headquartered in Independence, Missouri, United States. The church derives its epithet from its founder, Alpheus Cutler, a member of the Nauvoo High Council and of Joseph Smith's Council of Fifty. Cutler justified his establishment of an independent church organization by asserting that God had "rejected" Smith's organization—but not his priesthood—following Smith's death, but that Smith had named Cutler to a singular "Quorum of Seven" in anticipation of this event, with a unique prerogative to reorganize the church that no one beyond this group possessed. Hence, Cutler's organization claims to be the only legitimate Latter Day Saint church in the world today. Currently, it has only one branch, located in Independence. The Cutlerite church retains an endowment ceremony believed to date to the Nauvoo period, practices the United Order of Enoch, and accepts baptism for the dead, but not eternal marriage or polygamy.
