Whitingham, Vermont

The Whitingham Village Historic District encompasses much of the current village center of Whitingham, Vermont. It was developed mainly in the second half of the 19th century around industries powered by local water sources, and includes well-preserved architecture from that period. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006.

Jacksonville is a village in the town of Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 213 at the 2020 census.

Whitingham is the central village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Whitingham, Windham County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 91, compared to 1,344 in the entire town. Part of the village comprises the Whitingham Village Historic District. The CDP is in southwestern Windham County, west of the geographic center of the town of Whitingham. The community sits on a hill rising to the east above the south end of the Harriman Reservoir, an impoundment on the Deerfield River, which flows south and east to the Connecticut River in Massachusetts. Vermont Route 100 passes through the village, leading east 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to Jacksonville, the largest community in the town of Whitingham, and west 5 miles (8 km) to Readsboro.

The Windham-2 Representative District is a one-member state Representative district in the U.S. state of Vermont. It is one of the 108 one or two member districts into which the state was divided by the redistricting and reapportionment plan developed by the Vermont General Assembly following the 2000 U.S. Census. The plan applies to legislatures elected in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. A new plan will be developed in 2012 following the 2010 U.S. Census. The Windham-2 District includes all of the Windham County towns of Halifax, Whitingham, and Wilmington. As of the 2000 census, the state as a whole had a population of 608,827. As there are a total of 150 representatives, there were 4,059 residents per representative (or 8,118 residents per two representatives). The one member Windham-2 District had a population of 4,305 in that same census, 6.06% above the state average.

Harriman Dam is a hydroelectric dam in Windham County, Vermont in the town of Whitingham. The water from the dam flows through a penstock to a power generation plant in the adjacent town of Readsboro. The dam was built in 1923 by the New England Power Company. Some 215 feet (66 m) high and 1,250 feet (380 m) long as its crest, it is one of ten hydroelectric dams impounding the Deerfield River. It was purchased from the TransCanada Corporation in 2017 by Great River Hydro LLC, which currently operates the facility. It is an earthen dam with a relatively unusual concrete "glory hole" (freestanding conical drain) spillway, similar to another example at Monticello Dam in California. Harriman Reservoir has a water surface area of 2,039 acres (825 ha), a maximum depth of 180 feet (55 m), and a gross storage capacity of 117,300 acre-feet (144.7 million cubic metres).The dam and reservoir were named in recognition of utility executive Henry I. Harriman, a former president of the New England Power Company.

Molly Stark State Park is a 148-acre state park in Wilmington, Vermont. The park is named for Molly Stark, the famous wife of General John Stark of the American Revolutionary War, and is located along the Molly Stark Byway. Activities includes camping, hiking, picnicking, mountain biking, wildlife watching, and winter sports. There is a loop hiking trail up to the fire lookout tower on Mt. Olga. Facilities include a 23 tent/RV sites and 11 lean-to sites, flush toilets, hot showers, a play area and large pavilion with electricity, 3 charcoal grills, and 10 picnic tables.

Wilmington is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Wilmington, Windham County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 439, compared to 2,255 in the entire town. The center of the village is part of the Wilmington Village Historic District. The CDP is in southwestern Windham County, at the geographic center of the town of Wilmington, on the east side of the Green Mountains. It sits in the valley of the North Branch of the Deerfield River, which flows west to join the main stem of the Deerfield at the north end of Harriman Reservoir in western Wilmington. The area is part of the Connecticut River watershed. Vermont Route 9 (East and West Main Street) passes through the village, leading east 19 miles (31 km) to Brattleboro and west 20 miles (32 km) to Bennington. Vermont Route 100 (North Main Street) leads north from the center of Wilmington 8 miles (13 km) to Dover. Route 100 joins Route 9 going east out of Wilmington, then turns south and leads 5 miles (8 km) to Jacksonville.

The Wilmington Village Historic District encompasses a significant portion of the village center of Wilmington, Vermont. The village grew as a crossroads industrial center through the mid-19th century, and experienced relatively little growth afterward. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Readsboro is the primary village and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Readsboro, Bennington County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 297, out of 702 in the entire town of Readsboro. It is in southeastern Bennington County, in the southeast part of the town of Readsboro, mainly on the west side of the Deerfield River, a south-flowing tributary of the Connecticut River. Vermont Route 100 passes through the village, leading northwest 5 miles (8 km) to Vermont Route 8 at Heartwellville and east 8 miles (13 km) to Vermont Route 112 at Jacksonville. Bennington, the county seat, is 24 miles (39 km) to the northwest via Routes 100, 8, and 9.

Readsboro is a town in Bennington County, Vermont, United States. The town was named after John Reade, a landholder. The population was 702 at the 2020 census. The hamlet of Heartwellville is in the northern part of Readsboro, approximately 5 miles (8 km) north on Route 100 from the hamlet of Readsboro.The Readsboro census-designated place consists of the town center and had a population of 297 at the 2020 census.

The E.J. Bullock Block is a historic commercial building at 7012 Main Street in Readsboro, Vermont. Built in 1891, it is a prominent local example of Second Empire architecture, with a long history of commercial, social, and civic uses. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

Wilmington is a town in Windham County, Vermont, United States. The population was 2,255 at the 2020 census.
