The Karl Schwarzschild Observatory (German: Karl-Schwarzschild-Observatorium) is a German astronomical observatory in Tautenburg near Jena, Thuringia. It was founded in 1960 as an affiliated institute of the former German Academy of Sciences at Berlin and named in honour of the astronomer and physicist Karl Schwarzschild (1873–1916). In 1992, the institute was re-established as Thuringian State Observatory (Thüringer Landessternwarte, TLS). The observatory has the largest telescope located in Germany, which is also the largest Schmidt camera in the world. Made by VEB Zeiss Jena (the branch of Carl Zeiss located in Jena in what was then East Germany), this instrument is known as (2m) Alfred Jensch Telescope: though its mirror is 2 metres in diameter, the telescope's aperture is 1.34 m.The observatory has observed several exoplanets and brown dwarfs, as around the stars HD 8673, 30 Arietis, 4 Ursae Majoris, and around HD 13189 on 5 April 2005. The observatory also hosts an International station for the interferometric radio telescope LOFAR.

The Jenzig is a distinctive Muschelkalk mountain in Jena, Germany. At 385.3 m above sea level, the Jenzig is one of the highest mountains in the Saale Valley area and is located northeast of the city center. Due to its distinctive shape ("Jenzignase", German for "Jenzig nose") it is considered to be one of the Seven Wonders of Jena. On the summit stands the Jenzighaus, a restaurant with excellent views over the city. The Jenzig forms the southwestern end of a semicircular ridge, the Hufeisen ("Horseshoe"). This wooded plateau runs from the Jenzig eastwards, forming an arc as it continues further north and then back westwards, where the Alte Gleisberg along with the Kunitzburg forms the other end. In the interior of this "horseshoe" is a small side valley of the Saale valley, containing the villages of Kunitz and Laasan.

Jena-Zwätzen station is a railway station in Jena, Thuringia, Germany. It is a small, unmanned station on the Großheringen - Saalfeld railway. The route and the stations were established in 1871. At the time, Zwätzen was an independent village with a monastery. Nowadays, it is part of Jena and has 3100 inhabitants. The two platforms of the station are wheelchair-accessible. There is no station building. The closest connection to long-distance trains starts in Jena Paradies, 5km south of Zwätzen. Travellers can use either local trains, or bus and tram connections stopping near the station.
