Key West, Iowa

Mount Olivet Cemetery is a Catholic cemetery located at 10378 Military Road in Key West, Iowa approximately 4 mi (6.4 km) south of Dubuque. It is one of the two large Catholic cemeteries located in the Dubuque area. The cemetery is located near Saint Joseph's Catholic Church in Key West, but is operated independently. The cemetery offers in-ground burial, as well as columbarium and mausoleum entombment.

Mount Saint Bernard Seminary and Barn are historic buildings located south of Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Bishop Mathias Loras, the first Bishop of Dubuque, founded the a Catholic institution of higher education in his residence in 1839. St. Raphael's Seminary, primarily for the education of priests, was probably the first college established in what would become the State of Iowa. The Brothers of Christian Instruction, a French teaching order recruited to the diocese of Loras, contributed their services to the seminary. The school was expanded in 1850 when he began the construction of three new buildings on Table Mound that he named Mount St. Bernard College and Seminary. The Rev. Andrew Trevis, who was later influential in the development of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, was the rector at the time the building was constructed. The three-story limestone combination Federal and Greek Revival structure was designed by local architect Hugh V. Gildea. It was built for $10,000, which was a lot of money for the diocese at that time. It is unknown when the frame, gable-roofed barn with a stone foundation was built. A number of factors conspired to close Mount Saint Bernard, including economic conditions and a lack of clergy. Another factor was the Provincial Council of St. Louis decided in 1856 that one seminary in the St. Louis Province, of which the Diocese of Dubuque was a part, was enough. Loras, who spent a good deal of time here even working in the fields, decided to close the school. The students were sent to other seminaries while the clergy who taught here were placed in parishes. The archdiocese continued to maintain the buildings until 1900. In 1937 a 75-foot (23 m) cross of galvanized steel was erected on the property in 1937 in honor the centennial of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. Beginning in 1963 it was illuminated with a turquoise colored light funded by the local Knights of Columbus. The old seminary building has been converted into a residence. It and the barn were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Rockdale, Iowa was a small unincorporated village formerly located just south of Dubuque, Iowa between Dubuque and Key West, Iowa. The village was situated on the Catfish Creek in Dubuque County, Iowa, and was the site of one of the first mills in the state of Iowa. In 1834 or 1835 David Hutton and his son built a mill built of logs. Initially the mill was known as "The Catfish Mills." In 1839 the mill was sold. James Pratt and Walter Manson purchased the mill in 1840, and they renamed the mill "Rockford Mill." They replaced the original log building with a frame building four stories high. This mill could produce 90,000 bushels of wheat annually, and the flour produced was equal in quality to the flour produced in St. Louis, Missouri. As a result, the mill enjoyed a monopoly in the upper Midwest until the establishment of other mills. Pratt and Manson would operate this mill for the next 25 years. During this time Rockdale was a crossroads for farmers in the area. Operations at the Rockdale Mill were temporarily halted due to the Rockdale Flood. The mill would eventually start producing flour once again. In 1878 the mill burned to the ground. Thomas Watters Jr. rebuilt the mill as a stone structure. He changed the name to the South Dubuque Mill. J.F. Gondolfo would purchase the mill in 1885. He made repairs, and the mill continued to produce flour for a number of years. In 1901 the mill would be leased out to a company that ran the mill for the next 14 years. In 1915 the mill was finally shut down. For a time it was used as a dairy barn until it was destroyed by fire in 1927. The village would eventually grow to include a saloon, hotel, stores, blacksmith shop, several homes, and a post office. The villagers built a Methodist church built out of logs in the 1830s. In 1874 the present structure was built at 1500 Old Mill Road with red brick. The Rockdale Methodist Church still stands and, along with its Cemetery at the side and back, is still in use today.Rockdale's population was 132 in 1902, and was 85 in 1925.

The Mines of Spain State Recreation Area and E. B. Lyons Nature Center is a state park in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. It is near Dubuque, the eleventh-largest city in the state. The park features picnic areas, 15 miles (24 km) of walking/hiking trails, 4 miles (6.4 km) of ski trails, and the Betty Hauptli Bird and Butterfly Garden. It also includes archaeological sites of national importance as an early lead mining and smelting venture led by French explorer Julien Dubuque, as well as Dubuque's gravesite. These sites were collectively designated a National Historic Landmark District as Julien Dubuque's Mines.

The John and Marie (Palen) Schrup Farmstead Historic District is a nationally recognized historic district in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. At the time of its nomination it consisted of four resources, which included three contributing buildings and one non-contributing building. The three buildings include a stone house (c. 1854), barn (c. 1860), and well-house (c. 1860). The buildings are typical of those constructed by immigrant families from Luxembourg that settled in Dubuque and nearby Jackson counties. The front part of the house is the oldest structure here and was built when Martin Burkhart owned the property. He sold the farmstead to Casper Burkhart the following year, who then sold it to John and Marie Schrup in 1856. The Schrups were responsible for adding onto the back of the house about the time they bought it and the other two buildings. The dairy farm of 193 acres (78 ha) remained in the family until 1973. Because it was always a modest enterprise, the stone buildings were not torn down and replaced with modern structures as happened on many of the Luxembourgian farms built in the mid-19th century. A wooden shed was built in the early 20th century, and is the non-contributing building. A pole barn was also added to the farmstead and it fell down c. 1995.

The McMahon House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. This two-story stone structure was built by Ross McMahon, a master stonemason, in 1861. It is a good example of early vernacular architecture. There are no windows on the north and west elevations given that the house is built into the side of a hill. The original porch, and its replacement, have both been removed. McMahon did the stonework on several churches and road bridges in the area during the mid to late 19th century. He also had an interest in lead mining, and there are mine shafts on the neighboring property, which had been owned by his son. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

The Round Barn, Dubuque Township is a historic building located in Dubuque Township in Dubuque County, Iowa, United States. It was built in 1915 as a dairy barn. The building is a true round barn that measures 60 feet (18 m) in diameter. The structure is constructed in clay tile from the Johnston Brothers' Clay Works and it features a windowed cupola and dormers on the north and west sides.

The Johann Christian Frederick Rath House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. Rath settled in the Dubuque are from his native Hanover in 1851. He was a wood worker, farmer and lead miner. He acquired property along what is now Mt. Loretta Avenue and gave parcels to his children as they came of age. Rath completed this house in 1853. He died in 1881 and the house remained in the family until 1937. The house is a 1½-story brick structure with a walk-out basement. The side-gable roof has a large dormer on the back that was created from two smaller dormers in 1940. Also on the rear of the house is a full-length, two-story porch. The house's general form, window shapes, chimney placement and its five-bay, symmetrical plan suggests the Georgian Revival style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The Metropolitan Archdiocese of Dubuque (Latin: Archidiœcesis Metropolitae Dubuquensis) is a Latin Church ecclesiastical territory or archdiocese of the Catholic Church in the northeastern quarter of the state of Iowa in the United States. It includes all the Iowa counties north of Polk, Jasper, Poweshiek, Iowa, Johnson, Cedar, and Clinton counties, and east of Kossuth, Humboldt, Webster and Boone counties. The archdiocese has an area of about 17,400 square miles (45,000 km2). The Archdiocese of Dubuque is a metropolitan archdiocese. There are three suffragan dioceses in the ecclesiastical province under Dubuque's metropolitan archbishop: the Dioceses of Davenport, Des Moines, and Sioux City.

Wartburg Theological Seminary is a seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in Dubuque, Iowa. It offers three graduate-level degrees (MA, MA Diaconal Ministry, and M.Div.), a Theological Education for Emerging Ministries certificate, and a diploma in Anglican Studies, all of which are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada and the Higher Learning Commission. Students can also choose to add two concentrations: Youth, Culture, and Mission; and Hispanic Ministry. All three of Wartburg Theological Seminary's master's degrees offer the option for Distributed Learning Programs, which combine online learning, intensive courses on-campus, and residential formation. Wartburg also offers a Fully Distributed Master of Arts option without a semester-long residency requirement. Three academic and missional centers are found at Wartburg Theological Seminary, built on their historic strengths: the Center for Global Theologies, the Center for Theology & Land (rural ministry), and the Center for Youth Ministries. The Lutheran Seminary Program in the Southwest is a program of Wartburg Theological Seminary and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. The program educates women and men for ordained ministry through the Theological Education for Emerging Ministry. Wartburg Theological Seminary also has long-term ties with global partners, including: Haiti, Tanzania, Guyana, Namibia, Papua New Guinea (with the PNG Museum located on campus), and others.

St. Pius X Seminary is associated with Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and run under the auspices of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. The seminary prepares Minor (College) Seminarians for the priesthood, specifically preparing candidates for entrance into Major Seminary & Theological studies. Through Loras, the seminary provides full training in Philosophical studies, while giving students the necessary religious studies courses required for entrance into Major Seminary. Founded in 1839 by Bishop Mathias Loras as St. Raphael Seminary, the seminary has operated under various names and conditions at Loras College until adopting its present name in 1954. St. Pius X has prepared countless Seminarians across Iowa & surrounding states for the priesthood, counting over 30 Bishops as alumni. Currently, the seminary is housed at the Vianney House and serves Seminarians of the Archdiocese of Dubuque and the Diocese of Des Moines. The current rector of St. Pius X Seminary is Fr. David Schatz and the spiritual director is Fr. Tom McDermott.

The Kelley House is a historic building located in Dubuque, Iowa, United States. John and Mary Kelley bought this property from James Fanning in 1855. Kelley built this two-story structure, which is a rare example of Mississippi Valley French Colonial architecture in Iowa. While Kelley was not of French ancestry, the Dubuque area was initially settled by French Canadians. However, this house, completed by 1858, was completed well after the French influence in the area. It is also an example of the French style from the Southern United States and the Caribbean. Typical of this style is the full-length galerie, or porch, with an exterior staircase, and the main living quarters located above a full-height ground floor level. Both of these elements are found in the Kelley house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
