RAF Goldsborough

Goldsborough is a small hamlet in the civil parish of Lythe, North Yorkshire, England within the North York Moors National Park. It is situated a few miles west of Whitby. It was the site of a Roman signal station.

Kettleness was a railway station on the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway from 1883 to 1958 serving the remote village of Kettleness. The main station building is still extant and serves as a scouting centre.

Kettleness, is a hamlet in the Scarborough District of North Yorkshire, England. The settlement only consists of half-a-dozen houses, but up until the early 19th century, it was a much larger village. However, most of that village, which was on the headland, slipped into the sea as a result of instability caused by quarrying for the alum industry. Kettleness became a smaller settlement, with houses rebuilt slightly further inland. Historically, the hamlet has had an alum works, a jet mining industry and ironstone workings. The hamlet used to have a railway station on the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway, that was open between 1883 and 1958. Kettleness is recorded within the parish of Lythe for census purposes.

Barnby is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 UK census, the parish had a population of 79. As the civil parish population remained less than 100 at the 2011 census, all details were included in the civil parish of Mickleby. The parish includes the hamlets of East Barnby and West Barnby.

Sandsend Tunnel is a tunnel on the former Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway that was opened in 1883 and closed in 1958. The rail line that ran through it was originally intended to travel along the top of the cliffs, however some of the cliff fell into the sea whilst construction was suspended so the NER constructed two tunnels, the Sandsend Tunnel and the Kettleness Tunnel. The Sandsend Tunnel is the longer of two tunnels being 1,652 yards (0.94 miles) in length. It is predominantly straight but the north-western 300 yards incorporate a curve to the north. There are a total of five air shafts, two of which have nearby service galleries leading off horizontally to the cliffs which were used to dump spoil while carving out the tunnels, the air shafts were capped in 1958. The southern half of the tunnel is considerably damp with the tunnel being flooded to about 6 inches on the southern 300 yards. The southern portal of the Sandsend Tunnel is bricked up and it can only be accessed via the northern portal of the Kettleness Tunnel by walking through the Kettleness Tunnel and the area between the tunnels which is overgrown with grass and trees. The northern portal of the Sandsend Tunnel partially collapsed in 2008 after years of pressure from the cliff above.

The Hob Holes are caves in the cliffs of Runswick Bay, Scarborough, England which resulted from mining for jet – fossilised wood which is valuable as a gemstone. A hobgoblin, a bogle, or a hob was rumored to live there. Local mothers would visit the site with their children during low tide, seeking a remedy for whooping cough by calling on the spirit with the words: Hob Hole hob, my child has the kin cough, Take it off, Take it off! One account mentions that, apart from aiding with childhood illnesses, the hob would roam the moors behind the bay with a lantern, luring travelers into the rocky pits. On stormy nights, he would offer shelter in his hole, only to abandon them to the rising tide.

Lythe is a small village and large civil parish, in North Yorkshire, England, situated near Whitby within the North York Moors National Park. The name of the village derives from Old Norse and means hill or slope. It was in the old North Riding and in the wapentake of Langbaurgh East until 1974. From 1974 to 2023 it was part of the Borough of Scarborough. According to the 2011 UK census, Lythe parish had a population of 377, a reduction on the 2001 UK census figure of 465.

Ewe Cote is a small hamlet on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, set in the northern edge of the civil parish of Whitby, in North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2011 UK census, Ewe Cote has a population of 11.

The Church of St Oswald, Lythe, is the parish church for the village of Lythe, 4 miles (6.4 km) west, north west of Whitby in North Yorkshire, England. The church is at the top of Lythe Bank (the western end) and is just east of the village on the A174 road. A church has been on the site since the 13th century, though the present building was adapted from the old church in 1910 by Sir Walter Tapper. It was grade I listed in 1969.

Runswick RNLI Station, not to be confused with Runswick Bay Rescue Boat, was located in the village of Runswick Bay, approximately 7 mi (11 km) north-west of Whitby, in the county of North Yorkshire, England. A lifeboat station was established here in 1866 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In 1978, the nearby lifeboat station at Staithes was reopened as in Inshore lifeboat station, and renamed Staithes and Runswick. The All-weather lifeboat 37-11 The Royal Thames (ON 978) was withdrawn, and Runswick Lifeboat Station closed. Following a meeting of the local population, and with the view that a rescue service was still required, the independent Runswick Bay Rescue Boat was established in 1982.

Runswick Bay Rescue Boat operates out of the former RNLI Tractor shed, and is located in the village of Runswick Bay, in the county of North Yorkshire, in England. Runswick Lifeboat Station was opened here in 1866 by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The station remained in operation until 1978, when the All-weather lifeboat was withdrawn, and the former station at nearby Staithes was reopened as an Inshore lifeboat station. A rescue service was re-established in 1982 by the locally formed Runswick Bay Rescue Boat Association (RBRB). RBRB currently operate a 4.8 m (16 ft) Ribcraft RIB, Spirit of Nagar, on station since 2020.

Hutton Mulgrave is a village and civil parish in the Scarborough district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 UK census, Hutton Mulgrave parish had a population of 48. The population remained at less than 100 as at the 2011 Census. Details are included in the civil parish of Ugthorpe.
