Muchelney

The Priest's House is a National Trust-owned property in Muchelney, in the English county of Somerset. It has been designated as a grade II listed building. The house was built in the early 14th century by the nearby Muchelney Abbey to house the parish priest. Over the centuries the house deteriorated and was adapted for use as a school. In the late 19th century it rented as storage by a farmer. In the early 20th century the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings campaigned for its restoration and it was then taken over by the National Trust. The thatched stone building is rented to a tenant and has limited public access.

The Church of St Peter and St Paul in Muchelney, Somerset, England, has Saxon origins, however the current building largely dates from the 15th century. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building.The church, which is adjacent to the site of Muchelney Abbey and close to the River Parrett, has a ceiling enlivened with Jacobean paintings of bare-breasted angels, their nudity thought to symbolize innocent purity. They were painted in the early 17th century.The church also contains a barrel organ built by Gray and Davison and installed around 1835 to 1840. It is the last one known to be still in the church where it was first installed and still in working order.There is a three-bay aisled nave and a chancel with a short chapel on either side.It has a three-stage Somerset tower, dating from around 1468, supported by pairs of full-height corner buttresses. The south-east octagonal stair turret leads to an outer door.The parish is part of the Langport Area Team Ministry benefice within the Ilchester deanery of the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

Muchelney Abbey is an English Heritage property in the village of Muchelney in the Somerset Levels, England. The site consists of ruined walls showing the layout of the abbey buildings constructed from the 7th to 16th centuries, and the remaining intact Abbot's House. It is next to the parish church in which some of the fabric of the abbey has been reused. It comprises the remains and foundations of a medieval Benedictine abbey, the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon abbey, and an early Tudor house dating from the 16th century, formerly the lodgings of the resident Abbot, which is now a Grade I listed building. The ruins of the abbey have been designated as a scheduled monument.The abbey was founded in the 7th or 8th century, damaged by Viking raids and rebuilt and refounded in the 10th century. It owned and managed local land. The buildings were expanded from the 12th to 16th centuries until its dissolution in 1538. Most of the buildings were demolished and the stone used in local buildings, although the Abbot's House and reredorter survive. Some of the tiles and other decorative features from the monastic church were reused in the adjacent parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. Since 1927 the ruins have been in public ownership.

The River Yeo, also known as the River Ivel, is a tributary of the River Parrett in north Dorset and south Somerset, England. The river's names derive from the Celtic river-name gifl 'forked river'. The name Yeo appears to have been influenced by Old English ēa 'river'.The river rises in the North Dorset Downs region. It flows through the town of Sherborne and Sherborne Lake in north Dorset, and the Somerset towns of Yeovil, Yeovilton and Ilchester, to which it gives its name, and joins the River Parrett near Langport. For a few miles east of Yeovil, it forms the county boundary between Somerset and Dorset. The river is navigable for light craft for 8 miles (13 km) from the Parrett to Ilchester.The Yeo's tributaries include the River Gascoigne, which rises near Milborne Wick and joins the Yeo near Sherborne, the River Wriggle, Trent Brook, Hornsey Brook, the River Cam and Bearley Brook.

Huish Episcopi is a village and civil parish in Somerset, England, situated on the outskirts of Langport, 4 miles (6.4 km) south west of Somerton in the South Somerset district. The parish has a population of 2,644, and includes the hamlets of Bowdens, Combe, Pibsbury and Wearne.

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Huish Episcopi, Somerset, England has 12th-century origins, but was largely rebuilt in the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building. St Mary's Church also serves nearby Langport. Built in blue lias with golden hamstone decoration, the church is most noted for its classic 100 feet (30 m) Somerset tower, deemed to be an architectural companion piece to St Martin's Church in Kingsbury Episcopi. A church was present on the site during the 11th century. The current church was built after a fire in the previous structure. It was dedicated in 1232.St Mary's tower dates from around 1500 and was built in four stages replacing an earlier central tower. It is extensively embellished with pinnacles and quatrefoil panel bands. In the north-east corner is an octagonal stair turret which reaches the full height of the tower. The tower was depicted on a postage stamp in 1972.A stained glass window by Edward Burne-Jones is also noteworthy.The churchyard contains two Commonwealth war graves, of a Lincolnshire Regiment soldier of World War I and a Royal Artillery soldier of World War II.

Huish Episcopi Academy is a mixed secondary school located in Huish Episcopi near Langport, Somerset, England. Huish Episcopi has the academy status and has done since 2010. It is a state secondary school for pupils ages 11 to 16. The academy also has a Sixth Form for Further Education (16+). The school has a specialist status as a Science College, Language College and Applied Learning College. In 2017 it had 1,508 students. A range of subjects are offered, including Design Technology in Food, Textiles, and Resistant Materials, Modern Foreign Languages, and Information Technology and computer science .

The Hanging Chapel (more formally known as the Chantry Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary) in Langport, Somerset, England is a 13th-century archway, bearing a Perpendicular building known as the hanging chapel. It has been designated as a Grade I listed building, and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

The Church of All Saints in Langport, Somerset, England, has 12th-century origins but was rebuilt in the late 15th century. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building.

Langport Railway Cutting (grid reference ST427272) is a 0.5 hectare geological Site of Special Scientific Interest at Langport in Somerset, England, notified in 1992. It is a Geological Conservation Review site. Gravels exposed at Langport Railway Cutting show scour-and-fill structures consistent with braided stream deposition. This site is of importance as one of the few permanently exposed localities for coldstage Pleistocene gravels in south Somerset and more particularly because it is the first site in Britain in which typical calcrete features have been recorded. As such it is of national significance and has considerable research potential.

Langport was a rural district in Somerset, England, from 1894 to 1974. It was created in 1894 under the Local Government Act 1894. In 1974 it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972 to become part of South Somerset. The parishes which used to be in the district include Aller, Babcary, Barrington, Barton St David, Beercrocombe, Charlton Mackrell, Compton Dundon, Curry Mallet, Curry Rivel, Drayton, Fivehead, Hambridge and Westport, High Ham, Huish Episcopi, Isle Abbots, Isle Brewers, Keinton Mandeville, Kingsbury Episcopi, Kingsdon, Kingweston, Langport, Long Sutton, Muchelney, Pitney, Puckington and Somerton.

The River Isle (also known as the River Ile) flows from its source near Combe St Nicholas, through Somerset, England and discharges into the River Parrett south of Langport near Midelney. Several small springs merge into the river near Wadeford it then flows north past Donyatt, Ilminster, Puckington, and Isle Abbotts, before joining the Parrett. The first section of the river falls 250 feet (76 m) in 6 miles (9.7 km) and then falls less steeply falling 80 feet (24 m) during the subsequent 8 miles (13 km). As a result, several mills were built on the upper reaches of the river. At least one mill was in existence at the time of the Domesday Book in 1086. These mills were an important part of the local economy connecting with the wool trade.The road bridge over the river at Knowle St Giles is a Grade II listed building.A lock was built at the junction with the River Parrett, to maintain water levels, when the Westport Canal was built in the 1830s. The canal joins the river approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) before the confluence with the Parrett.Chard Reservoir was built by damming the river in the 1840s to provide water for the Chard Canal.
