Abbenrode is a village and a former municipality in the district of Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Since 1 January 2010, it has been part of the municipality of Nordharz. The village is situated north of the Harz mountain range, near the Ecker creek and the border with the state of Lower Saxony. The Abbenrode manor, possibly named after a first settler called Abbo, arose in the medieval Duchy of Saxony and was first mentioned as Abbenrot in an 1129 deed issued by King Lothair III of Germany. About 1145 Bishop Rudolf of Halberstadt established a monastery of Benedictine nuns here. His foundation received the confirmation by Pope Eugene III in 1148. The abbey was devastated during the 1525 German Peasants' War and finally dissolved under the rule of the Protestant Halberstadt administrator Sigismund of Brandenburg in 1554. The present-day parish church, dedicated to Saint Andrew, was consecrated in 1575. After World War II the village became isolated and decayed owing to its location close to the inner-German border. Since German reunification Abbenrode has recovered.

Taubenklippe

The Taubenklippe is a rock formation in the Harz mountains in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. It lies about halfway between Bad Harzburg and Ilsenburg at a height of 572 m above NN on the eastern slopes of the Ecker valley. From the crag there is a good view over Harz Foreland, the heights near Bad Harzburg and the highest mountain in the Har, the Brocken. The Taubenklippe may be reached from the Ecker valley on a footpath, some 6 km long, that starts in Ilsenburg. The Taubenklippe is checkpoint number 4 in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking trail network. Rabenklippe

The Rabenklippe is a granite rock formation in the Harz National Park. The name means "Raven Crag" and is very apt as ravens live in the vicinity.

Butterberg (Bad Harzburg)

The Butterberg is an elongated hill northeast of the spa town of Bad Harzburg in Goslar district, in the German state of Lower Saxony. Its long crest, which since 1952 is protected as a nature reserve, reaches a height of 308 m above NN. Part of the northern Harz foothills, the hill is located north of the Harz Nature Park at the rim of the Harz National Park. The Butterberg is part of the Harz - Brunswick Land - Eastphalia National Geopark; its steeply inclined strata belong to the Northern Harz Boundary Fault. In the west, the hill is bounded by the Radau river and the parallel Bundesstraße 4 highway. The mountain-ridge path offers scenic views to the Harz mountains and over the North German Plain. The name Butter is associated with Low German buten (i.e. "outside", c.f. Buten and binnen). These are therefore hills lying outside or on the edge of given places. There are many other "Butterberg" hills in German-speaking regions.
