Slug Road

Cairn Mon Earn or Cairn-mon-earn is a hill in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

Cryne Corse Mounth is an old droving road which ran south across the high ground from the Dee valley in Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland. Much of the route is now afforested. It is one of a number of old tracks which passed over the Mounth, an eastern extension of the Grampian Mountains. The route departs the modern A957 road at a sharp bend at Spyhill and climbs steeply to the vicinity of Red Beard's Well near the Durris transmitting station. The well itself is named from the leader of a gang of highwaymen who lay in wait for travellers on this route. At its south end the route meets the public road near Cleuchead north of Glenbervie. Almost all of the route now lies within an area of conifer plantations, known in part as Fetteresso Forest. Edward I is said to have used the route in 1296, as subsequently did William Wallace. Cattle were driven along the route to Herscha Hill, north of Fordoun where an annual cattle fair known as St Palladius' or Paldy Fair was held each July. An alternative name for the route is Cryne Cross. Parts of the route are annotated on modern Ordnance Survey mapping as 'Cryne Corse Road (Track)'.

The Durris transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility, situated close to the town of Stonehaven, within Durris Forest, within the area also known historically as Kincardineshire (grid reference NO763899). It is owned and operated by Arqiva, and is the tallest structure in Scotland.

Durris Forest is a chiefly coniferous forest south of the River Dee approximately three kilometres west of Netherley in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The A957 road forms the southwest boundary of Durris Forest, separating it from Fetteresso Forest. The Durris Forest includes several smaller named woodlands. The ancient route of Elsick Mounth crosses the Grampian Mounth within the Durris Forest. Notable natural features in the vicinity include Red Moss and Meikle Carewe Hill. Notable historic features in this area include Raedykes Roman Camp, Muchalls Castle and Maryculter House.

Lochton is a settlement on the Slug Road in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Roman legions marched from Raedykes to Normandykes Roman Camp somewhat east of Lochton, using higher ground evading the bogs of Red Moss and other low-lying areas including the Burn of Muchalls. That march used the nearby Elsick Mounth, an ancient trackways crossing the Mounth of the Grampian Mountains, lying westerly of Netherley.

Mergie is a settlement in Aberdeenshire approximately six miles west of Stonehaven, Scotland. Situated in the former Kincardineshire slightly south of the Slug Road.

The Fetteresso Forest is a woodland that is principally coniferous situated in the Mounth range of the Grampian Mountains in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The forest has a number of prominent mountain peaks including the Hill of Blacklodge and Craiginour peak. A good overlook for viewing the forest from the north side lies on an unnamed tarmack road which leads north from the Slug Road to the Raedykes Roman site. The Cowie Water flows through and drains much of the forest. To the north of the easternmost part of the forest is the archaeological site Raedykes Roman Camp, as well as Cowton Burn. The Slug Road runs along much of the northeast perimeter of Fetteresso Forest. Notable features in this vicinity include Dunnottar Castle, Fetteresso Castle, Bogjurgan Hill and Muchalls Castle.

Balfour (Scottish Gaelic: Baile Phùir), Aberdeenshire is a settlement on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Balfour lies south of the River Dee.

Durris Castle or the House of Dores was an early royal residence on the southern bank of the River Dee in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The castle controlled the northern end of the Crynes Corse Mounth trackway. Dating from at least the 13th century, the castle, a motte and bailey, was occupied by Alexander III and is mentioned in the Chamberlain Rolls of the time as the subject of repairs. King Edward I of England stayed one night in 1296 at the castle, during his invasion of Scotland. Durris was granted to the Fraser family by King Robert I of Scotland and created into a barony by King David II of Scotland.It was burned by the Marquis of Montrose in 1645 and not rebuilt. No remains of the castle exist today, but the 7-metre-high conical knoll on which it stood retains the name Castle Hill. The hill has a flattened summit measuring 41 metres by 30 metres, and its sides may have been artificially steepened. Evidence remains on the western side of the site of a 2.6 metre ditch, possibly a moat.

Mills of Drum railway station was opened in September 1853 by the Deeside Railway and served the rural area around Park House and Crathes estates at the Mills of Drum or Drum Mills, corn mills, that lay close to the River Dee. The Deeside Railway was taken over by the GNoSR in the 1860s. Mills of Drum only remained open until 1863 as an intermediate station on the Deeside Railway that ran from Aberdeen (Joint) to Ballater. Mills of Drum station was located in Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
