It has been proposed by Germany for inscription in the List of World Heritage. The World Heritage nomination Naumburg Cathedral and the High Medieval Cultural Landscape of the Rivers Saale and Unstrut is representative for the processes that shaped the continent during the High Middle Ages between 1000 and 1300: Christianization, the so-called Landesausbau and the dynamics of cultural exchange and transfer characteristic for this very period.

The Goseck Circle (German: Sonnenobservatorium Goseck) is a Neolithic structure in Goseck in the Burgenlandkreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Its construction is dated to approximately 4900 B.C., and appears to have remained in use until about 4700 B.C. Thus, it may be the oldest and best known of the circular enclosures associated with the Central European Neolithic. Currently, the site is presented officially by the state archaeologists and the local association that looks after it as a ritual or cult structure. The circle consists of a concentric ditch 75 metres (246 feet) across and two palisade rings containing entrances in places aligned with sunrise and sunset on the winter solstice days and smaller entrances aligned with the summer solstice. Marketing materials have described the site as one of the oldest "Solar observatories" in the world, but sunrise and sunset during winter and summer solstices are the only evident astronomical alignments emphasized in the remains of the structure. The existence of the site was made public in August 2003. It was opened for visitors in December 2005.

Neuenburg Castle (German: Schloss Neuenburg) is a hilltop castle overlooking Freyburg, a town in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The castle was built around 1090 by the Thuringian count Ludwig der Springer, securing his territory in the east, as did its sister castle Wartburg in the west. The name Neuenburg derives from German for "new castle". From 1656 until 1746 it was a secondary residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Weissenfels.

The Unstrut (pronounced [ˈʊnʃtʁuːt]) is a river in Germany and a left tributary of the Saale. The Unstrut originates in northern Thuringia near Dingelstädt (west of Kefferhausen in the Eichsfeld area) and its catchment area is the whole of the Thuringian Basin. It breaks out of the basin through the Thuringian Gate west of Heldrungen and, in its lower reaches, flows through Saxony-Anhalt before emptying into the Saale near Naumburg. The total length of the Unstrut is 192 kilometres (119 mi). Towns along the Unstrut include Mühlhausen, Sömmerda, Bad Frankenhausen, Artern, Roßleben, and Freyburg. The main tributaries of the Unstrut are the Gera, Wipper, Helme, and Lossa. The countryside around the Saale and Unstrut rivers forms the wine-growing region of Saale-Unstrut. The well-known brand of sparkling wine, Rotkäppchen ("Little Red Riding Hood") is produced in the cellars of Freyburg.

The Friedrich Ludwig Jahn Memorial Gymnasium (in German Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Erinnerungsturnhalle) in Freyburg, Germany, is a listed historic building that combines a gymnasium with a memorial. It was built in 1894 in the Neo-Romanesque style to commemorate Friedrich Ludwig Jahn (1778–1852), the founder of the German gymnastics movement. The design was created by architect Georg Weidenbach from Leipzig, and the site chosen was the former cemetery located outside the Obertor gate. During construction, Jahn’s remains were transferred in March 1894 to a specially constructed crypt beneath the northwestern gable of the gymnasium. The initiative for the building came from the Deutsche Turnerschaft (German Gymnastics Association) along with private supporters. Upon completion, the gymnasium was presented as a gift from the Deutsche Turnerschaft to the town of Freyburg. Today, it is regarded as an important architectural testament to the gymnastics and commemorative culture of the late 19th century.

One of the most prosperous towns in the region, Freyburg is nicknamed "Tuscany of the North" It is the headquarters of one of the world's largest wine companies.The town and the castle of Freyburg are part of the World Heritage designation "Naumburg Cathedral and the High Medieval Cultural Landscape of the Rivers Saale and Unstrut".

Unstruttal is a Verbandsgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the Burgenlandkreis (district), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Before 1 January 2010, it was a Verwaltungsgemeinschaft. It is situated along the river Unstrut, approx. 50 km west of Leipzig. The seat of the Verbandsgemeinde is in Freyburg. The Verbandsgemeinde Unstruttal consists of the following municipalities: Balgstädt Freyburg Gleina Goseck Karsdorf Laucha an der Unstrut Nebra
