Roman Ridge

Little Canada is a hamlet in the City of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the B6422 road between Brodsworth and Scawthorpe, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of Doncaster city centre. The Scawthorpe subdivision within the Adwick le Street built-up area, which only includes Little Canada and not the bulk of Scawthorpe, had a population of 259 at the 2011 census.

Ridgewood School is a coeducational secondary school with academy status in Scawsby, Doncaster, England. The school gained academy status in October 2011, and was a specialist Engineering College prior to September 2015.

Highfields is a former coal mining village, located south of the model village of Woodlands, in South Yorkshire. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is part of the City of Doncaster. The village is located in the Adwick ward of Doncaster MBC. Although it does not currently have an air of prosperity, Highfields was built so that most houses either overlooked farmland or woodland, the ornamental Highfields Lake, or the greens in the centre of the village. Like its neighbour, Woodlands, Highfields lies between the historic Great North Road and the Roman road. The Roman road is a branch of Ermine Street, branching off near Lincoln and rejoining near York. Although a separate branch, it is also known as Ermine Street. Locally, this stretch of the road is known as the Roman Ridge, although it is more colloquially known as the Roman Rigg. David Pegg, one of the eight Manchester United footballers who died as a result of the Munich air disaster of February 1958, was born at Highfields in 1935 and lived locally until he began his career with Manchester United in the early 1950s. Half a mile south-east are the surviving earthworks, much overgrown, of Hangthwaite Castle, a medieval motte-and-bailey castle.

Highfields Lake is an ornamental lake in the Woodlands wildlife park at Highfields, north of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England.It is filled by the Pick Burn, which then flows on to join the River Don as Bentley Mill Stream. The lake was originally built by the owners of Woodlands, a country house that lent its name to the model village built for the miners of Brodsworth Colliery.The lake now forms part of High Country Park and Woodlands wildlife park, run by Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, whilst Woodlands is now a social club. Doncaster Greenway North passes to the north of the lake alongside the A638 road.

Hanging Wood (or Highfields Wood) is an area of woodland situated between the old Great North Road and the Roman Road, and between the mining villages of Highfields and Woodlands in South Yorkshire, England. The Woodlands wildlife park and an ornamental lake, Highfields Lake are features of the wood, as is Woodlands, a former country house, now a social club. Hanging Wood was part of Barnsdale Forest, where the original Robin Hood ballads are set. A "Robin Hood's stream" rises near the Roman Road at Highfields approximately 200 yards east of the Cinder path between Highfields and Woodlands and flows into the river Pick or (Pick burn) which itself flows into Highfields Lake. Hanging Wood was reputedly one of the favourite 'hold up' spots for the 17th Century Highwayman William Nevison (Swift Nick, Black Bob). The London to York Stage coach had to negotiate a small valley at the point where the Roman Ridge crossed over the Pick Burn in Hangingwood due to having to reduce speed to negotiate this natural obstacle the Stage coaches had to reduce speed to walking pace which made them vulnerable to ambush in what is still an isolated location. There is a record of one such attack in the Archives at Doncaster Council where a 'Hue and Cry' (Posse) was raised and said highwayman chased to Owston Village via Skellow before he evaded his pursuers. The Ghost of a Headless Horseman allegedly haunts the Roman Ridge at Hanging wood.

Sunnyfields is a suburb of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It lies to the east of Scawsby and to the west of Scawthorpe. It forms part of the Doncaster North parliamentary constituency. It elects 2 councillors to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council. The ward is named after the Roman Ridge, a bridleway that was an ancient Roman road. In 2011 it had a population of 11,229. The ward was formed in 2015.

Hangthwaite Castle was an earthwork motte and bailey castle founded by Nigel Fozzard. It stood in the 11th century and is situated just north of Scawthorpe, Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. Originally, the site was known as Langthwaite, though it changed over the years to Hangthwaite. In the 13th century, a fortified house called Radcliffe Moat (53.5554°N 1.1639°W / 53.5554; -1.1639 (Radcliffe Moat)) replaced Hangthwaite Castle as a local fortification. Nowadays, only the motte and the ditches remain. Encased by the wide wet ditch, the motte defends a bean-shaped eastern bailey and a small north-western mound, which is possibly a barbican.A settlement was adjacent to the castle, which is now designated as a Deserted Medieval Village (DMV). The site is now a scheduled monument.It is known locally as Castle Hills, with a school, just a few hundred yards away bearing the name Castle Hills Primary School.

Scawsby is a suburb of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 2 miles north-west of the city centre on the A635 road to Barnsley close to its terminus with the A638.

Cusworth Hall is an 18th-century Grade I listed country house in Cusworth, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire in the north of England. Set in the landscaped parklands of Cusworth Park, Cusworth Hall is a good example of a Georgian country house. It is now a country house museum. The house is constructed of ashlar with slate roofs. The rectangular 6 x 5 bay plan main block is linked to 5 x 2 bay service wings.

Cusworth is a village and suburb of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England, located 2 miles (3.2 km) to its north-west within the civil parish of Sprotbrough and Cusworth and the City of Doncaster, with a population of 4,728. It is home to Cusworth Hall, an 18th century country house, and its surrounding parkland. Some buildings in the old village can be dated back to the 16th century.The village's historic cottages, semi-rural location and situation on the edge of a plateau has led to it sometimes being referred to as ‘a piece of the Cotswolds in Yorkshire’.
