Appleton Wiske

St Mary's Church is the parish church of Appleton Wiske, a village in North Yorkshire, in England. The oldest surviving part of the church is the chancel arch, which was constructed in the 12th century, its size suggesting that it was part of an important building. Parts of the walls may also date from the 12th century, but they have been heavily altered. There are buttresses which probably date from the 14th century, while the chancel is probably 16th century. The north door was walled up in 1760, and in 1802 the roof was replaced, and a gallery and new pews were installed. In 1875, the building was heavily restored by Walker Stead, with the work of 1802 removed, new windows added, and the ground level outside lowered. A vestry was added in the 20th century, and the building was Grade II listed in 1970. The building is constructed of stone from Osmotherley, and has a mixture of stone slates and Welsh slate on its roof. It consists of a two-bay nave with south porch, and a lower chancel with north vestry. Most of the windows are 19th century, but the chancel retains one twin lancet window from the 16th century.

Welbury is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Appleton Wiske and 8 miles (13 km) north of Northallerton. The village is mentioned in the Domesday book (1086) as having 6 Geld units for taxable purposes and King William being the Lord. The village was originally in the Union of Northallerton which was in the Wapentake of Birdforth. In 1319, the village and fields were destroyed by marauding Scots on their way to meet the English at what would become the Battle of Myton.Since about 1800, the manor of Welbury has been held by the Earl of Harewood. St Leonard Church is 9th century and had renovations in 1815 and 1877. It is in the parish of Welbury in the Diocese of York.Welbury used to have its own railway station just south of the village built by the Leeds and Thirsk Railway (later the Leeds Northern Railway) which later became part of the North Eastern Railway. The station opened in 1852 and closed to passengers in 1954. The line is still open and is served by Trans-Pennine expresses between Middlesbrough and Manchester Airport via York and Leeds.Welbury has a village pub, The Duke of Wellington, which gives its land over to the welly wanging championships.

West Rounton Gates railway station, was a railway station between Welbury and Picton railway stations on the Leeds Northern Railway in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. The station was opened in 1864, but it was served by trains on Wednesdays only for the market day in Stockton-on-Tees.

Welbury railway station was a railway station serving the village of Welbury in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe Line (now part of the North TransPennine route) it was opened on 2 June 1852 by the Leeds Northern Railway. It closed to passengers on 20 September 1954 and closed completely in 1963. The station was located 5.6 miles (9 km) north of Northallerton station and 8.7 miles (14 km) south of Eaglescliffe. The line is still open for passenger and freight trains, with TransPennine Express providing an hourly service between Manchester Airport, Middlesbrough and Redcar Central and Grand Central providing five trains per day in each direction between Sunderland and London King's Cross. Freight is mostly, steel, coal and biomass run by several operators. There is a level crossing at Welbury which is controlled by Low Gates box in Northallerton.

Deighton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of Northallerton and near the A167 road. A moated site at grid reference NZ379017 in Deighton is a scheduled ancient monument. In the 2011 census, the population of Deighton (including Little Smeaton and Birkby) was 168.

High Worsall is a hamlet and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England. It is near Low Worsall and 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Yarm. The population of the parish was estimated at 40 in 2010. The population remained at less than 100 at the 2011 Census, so details were included in the civil parish of Low Worsall. However, in 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the hamlet to have 40 people living there in 2015.Both High and Low Worsall are mentioned in the Domesday Book, and the first element derives from an Old English personal name (Wyrc) and the location of the villages in the nook of land of the River Tees provides the second element of the name. The area contains evidence of a deserted medieval village, featured on Time Team in the late 1990s.A chapel dedicated to St John was built in the village c. 1710, which was used up until 1894, when a church was built in Low Worsall. The churchyard was still the location of burials until at least 1957.High Worsall was the highest tidal point on the River Tees until the opening of the Tees Barrage in 1995.

Picton is a hamlet and civil parish located in the north of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 4 miles (6 km) south from Yarm, 8 miles (13 km) south from Middlesbrough, and just over 1 mile (1.6 km) west from the A19 road. The name of the village derives from Old English and means "Pica's farm or settlement." Up until the 1850s, the village was spelt as Pickton with the old spelling being cut into the Picton Liberty stone which marked the boundary between the parishes of Picton and Kirklevington. The parish is in the Hambleton District and had a population of 108 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 135 at the 2011 Census. It lies just south of the border with the Stockton-on-Tees unitary authority. A stream which lies east of the village is called the Picton Stell.Every year Picton holds a show on the third Saturday in July. The event has horse, dog, craft and horticulture competitions, and traditional games and races for children. There is also a bar, and stalls for refreshment and entertainment. This village contains The Station public house and a small disused church, the grade II listed Church of St Hilary, which was abandoned in 2004 due to structural problems. The Station pub takes its name from the railway station that was just east of the village on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe line. The station was also a junction for trains on the Picton to Battersby line. The station was closed to passengers in 1960 and to goods in 1964.

Hornby is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies on a minor road between Great Smeaton and Appleton Wiske.It lies roughly 9 miles (14 km) from Northallerton, 9 miles (14 km) from Darlington, and 7 miles (11 km) from Yarm.According to the 2001 census, Hornby had a population of 206, which increased in the 2011 census to 238. The village has very few amenities. There is a small church, a telephone box and a post box. The village pub is called the "Grange Arms".

Low Worsall is a small village and civil parish in Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England, near High Worsall and 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Yarm.In 1732, Richard and Thomas Peirse developed a port on the southern banks of the River Tees at Low Worsall, and named it Peirseburgh. The river was naviagable as far as Worsall at that time, and exports of lead would pass through Worsall to be loaded onto ships at Yarm. The brothers developed a port to capture road traffic and transfer it to and from ships.

East Rounton is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton District of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the A19 and 8 miles (13 km) north-east of Northallerton. It is on the River Wiske and West Rounton is nearby. The population taken at the 2011 Census was less than 100. Details are included in the civil parish of West Rounton. East Rounton was the site of Rounton Grange, a country house designed by the architect Philip Webb in 1872 to 1876 for the industrialist Sir Isaac Lowthian Bell. It was demolished in 1953.

Picton railway station was a railway station serving the village of Picton in North Yorkshire, England. Located on the Northallerton to Eaglescliffe Line (which is now the North TransPennine line) it was opened on 2 June 1852 by the Leeds Northern Railway. It closed to passengers on 4 January 1960 and closed completely in July 1964.
