Camden Underworld

The World's End is a pub and music venue at 174 Camden High Street in Camden Town, London, England, just south of Camden Town tube station with an additional branch at Finsbury Park, 23 Stroud Green Rd, London. It is a long established business, formerly known as Mother Red Cap or Mother Damnable's. The first reference to a tavern in the area occurs in 1690. At that time the locality was entirely rural and the proprietors relied on trade passing by on the road from London to Hampstead and Highgate. The name Halfway House was accordingly also used. It is not clear whether there was one establishment in the first half of the 18th century or two, but by 1751 the Mother Red Cap and the Mother Black Cap (now The Black Cap) were both in business. In the late 18th century the Mother Red Cap was at its present location, and it had acquired a tea garden. Camden Road was later built across the grounds, and the building was reconstructed. The present building dates from 1875 and was designed by H.H. Bridgman. The pub and venue in its present large guise is the work of Andrew Marler, a serial developer of Licensed Premises, who owned it as a 200 capacity pub and in 1988 bought the whole 'island site' on which it stands. He then enlarged the pub to a capacity of 1,000 and built the 500 capacity Underworld venue beneath the pub. Marler went on in 1994 to buy the BBC Television Theatre from the BBC and refurbish and launch the site as The Shepherd's Bush Empire, continuing with the business model of selling drinks to customers whilst being professionally entertained. The World's End and its Underworld Club, both Camden and Finsbury locations, have won Venue of the Year and hosted bands/artists like Dave Stewart, The Cranberries, Stuck Mojo, The Datsuns, The Darkness and Radiohead, as well as a host of extreme metal bands.

The Aba Daba Music Hall was co-founded by Aline Waites in 1969 at the Mother Redcap pub in Camden Town, London, England. The other original directors were David Ryder Futcher, Barrymore Brown, and Janet Browning. It transferred to the Pindar of Wakefield the following year, and stayed there until 1985, when the Pindar was sold and renamed The Water Rats. The Aba Daba Theatre Company stayed at the Water Rats until 1988. They started a new project at Underneath The Arches in Southwark in 1991, and carried on there until 1996. The Aba Daba Theatre Company have produced shows at the Canal Cafe, Little Venice, The Hollywood Arms, Chelsea and the Star and Garter, Putney, in addition to many West End and regional theatres. They have toured extensively in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, Canada, and the United States. Waites produced the shows from the very beginning. Many musical comedies and revues were written by Waites and Robin Hunter. Together with musical director, David Wykes, they wrote The Illustrated Victorian Songbook, published by Michael Joseph in 1985. Other company directors have included Shaun Curry, Robin Hunter, Geoffrey Robinson, David Wykes and Tony Locantro. David Wykes, Paul Smith, Mike Dixon, Peter Pontzen, Barry Booth and Tony Locantro were among the music directors.

The British Boot Company (formerly known as Holts) is a shoe shop in Camden Town in London notable for being a leading UK stockist of English brands such as Dr Martens, Grinders, Solovair, Gladiator, George Cox, Tredair and NPS. The shop was founded as "Holts" in 1851, selling hobnail boots. In the 1980s, the shop changed its name to British Boot Company, but the business was still run by the same family. In the 1970s and early 1980s the shop was popular with skinheads and punks from all over the world, who came to buy bovver boots or brothel creepers. Customers could borrow a marker pen to write messages on the walls that would then be read by other skinhead crews or punk bands on tour. In the late 1970s, the shop's owner, Alan Roumana, formed a close association with the local band North London Invaders, who would later become Madness. The band used to buy loafers from the shop, and they featured the store in their music videos "The Prince" and "The Sun and The Rain". Members of The Clash, Sex Pistols and UK Subs also became regular customers.

Camden Town is a London Underground station on the Northern line. It is a major junction for the line, as it is where the Edgware and High Barnet branches merge from the north, and is also where they split to the south into the Bank and Charing Cross branches for the journey through Central London. It is particularly busy with visitors to the Camden markets at weekends, and, until 2019, was exit-only on Sundays to prevent overcrowding. Northbound, the next stations are Chalk Farm on the Edgware branch and Kentish Town on the High Barnet branch. Southbound, the next stations are Mornington Crescent on the Charing Cross branch and Euston on the Bank branch. The station is in Travelcard Zone 2.

The Black Cap was a pub in Camden Town, London known for its drag cabaret, and popular from the mid-1960s until it closed in April 2015.

The Electric Ballroom is a 1,500-capacity performance venue (primarily for rock bands) and indoor market located at 184 Camden High Street in Camden Town, London, England.

St Michael's Church is the principal Anglican church for Camden Town in north London. The present building, built in the late 19th century, was designed by George Frederick Bodley and Thomas Garner in a Gothic Revival style.

The Jazz Cafe is a music venue in Camden Town, London. It opened in 1990 on the former premises of a branch of Barclays Bank and has had several owners throughout its history as a music venue. In 2020 the Jazz Cafe celebrates its 30th year, having hosted some of the most respected names in the jazz and soul world – including D’Angelo, Amy Winehouse, Adele, Roy Ayers, Bobby Womack. The venue has built a reputation for booking some of the world's biggest acts alongside local talent and rising stars. Boasting a restaurant upstairs that overlooks the stage, the venue holds 450 people across both floors.

Inverness Street Market is an outdoor street market in Camden, North London. Licences to trade are issued by Camden London Borough Council.

Blow Up is a club night that was founded in the early 1990s by promoter and DJ Paul Tunkin at a North London pub called "The Laurel Tree". The night quickly became the centre of the emerging Britpop scene in Camden attracting long queues of people eager to gain entry to the tiny venue. Early regulars included members of Blur, Pulp, Elastica, Suede, The Buzzcocks, Huggy Bear and The Jesus and Mary Chain, leading to the club being referred to as the place where "Britpop was born".The style of Blow Up and its audience has been noted as an early influence on, and instrumental in, the later mid-Nineties explosion of the Britpop scene in the UK and abroad, with Time Out calling it the "breeding ground" of the Britpop sound. John Best said that "not only do British bands look like Jarvis now, so do fashion models. It's global and I think it started at Blow Up." The Guest List called it "the night that spawned a thousand bands".

Our Lady of Hal is the Catholic parish church for the Camden Town area of London. The church was completed in 1933, and was under the authority of the Missionary Fathers of Scheut in Belgium until it came under the Catholic Diocese of Westminster in 1982. The church is the site for the English shrine to Our Lady of Hal, a medieval statue believed to be miraculous, in Halle, Belgium.

Sainsbury's supermarket, Camden is an architecturally notable supermarket building in Camden Road, north London, and is part of the J Sainsbury chain. It was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners and was completed in 1988, on the site of the former Aerated Bread Company Camden Town bakery. In 2019 it became the first purpose built supermarket to be Grade II listed for its futuristic architecture.
