John O'Gaunt's Castle

Beaver Dyke Reservoirs were two water supply reservoirs (one of which is still extant), 5 miles (8 km) west of Harrogate in North Yorkshire, England. The main reservoir, also known as Lower Beaver Dyke Reservoir, was constructed in 1890 and had a surface area of 9 ha. In 2008 the reservoir's owner, Yorkshire Water, decided that it was not economic to maintain its ageing structures. It was decommissioned between 2013 and 2015 by breaching its dam and channelling a stream in the bed of the former reservoir. A residual lake of 0.5 ha was retained. The water of the reservoir was relatively nutrient rich, but it was known to suffer from potentially toxic blooms of Blue green algae. The smaller reservoir (also called John O'Gaunts Reservoir due to the proximity of John O'Gaunt's Castle) is still filled with water.

Norwood is a civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. According to the 2001 UK census, Norwood parish had a population of 200, increasing to 216 at the 2011 Census. The parish lies on the eastern side of the Washburn Valley, and includes the eastern side of Swinsty Reservoir. There is no village in the parish. The population is spread among a number of hamlets and scattered farms, including Norwood Bottom and Bland Hill. Norwood Hall is a 17th-century Grade II listed building. Dob Park Bridge is a packhorse bridge, probably of 17th century origin, over the River Washburn.Norwood is pronounced locally as "Norood", just as Warwick is pronounced "Warrick". Until 1950 the parish was known as Clifton with Norwood. It was historically a township in the parish of Fewston, and became a separate civil parish in 1866.

Knabs Ridge Wind Farm is an electricity generating site just south of the A59 road near to Felliscliffe, Kettlesing, North Yorkshire, England. It was the first wind farm to be built in North Yorkshire in over 15 years, and was believed to be the first time that civilian air traffic was considered in the planning permission process.

Menwith Hill Elementary/High School was an American facility located at RAF Menwith Hill in North Yorkshire, England. It closed in 2015.

Felliscliffe is a civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, in Nidderdale, Harrogate borough. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 283. The principal settlement in the parish is the village of Kettlesing, and the parish also includes the hamlet of Swincliffe.

Royal Air Force Menwith Hill or more simply RAF Menwith Hill is a Royal Air Force station near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England, which provides communications and intelligence support services to the United Kingdom and the United States. The site contains an extensive satellite ground station and is a communications intercept and missile warning site. It has been described as the largest electronic monitoring station in the world.RAF Menwith Hill is owned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), but made available to the US Department of Defense (DoD) under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement 1951 and other, undisclosed agreements between the US and British governments. His Majesty's Government (HMG) is entitled to possession of the site and retains control over its use and its facilities, though the administration of the base is the responsibility of the US authorities, with support provided by around 400 staff from Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), in addition to United States Air Force (USAF) and US National Security Agency (NSA) personnel. In 2014, the number of American personnel was reduced as part of a streamlining of operations due to improvements in technology.The site acts as a ground station for a number of satellites operated by the US National Reconnaissance Office, on behalf of the NSA, with antennas contained in numerous distinctive white radomes, locally referred to as "the golf balls", and is alleged to be an element of the ECHELON system.The site is one of three main sites operated by the United States across the globe as a major satellite monitoring station and intelligence gathering location. The other two sites are located in America and Australia, having similar roles and working together with RAF Menwith Hill to develop knowledge around American, British and Australian interests. The Australian site is known as the Joint Defence Facility Pine Gap.

Wharfedale was a rural district in the West Riding of Yorkshire from 1894 to 1974. It comprised the northern side of lower Wharfedale, the lower Washburn Valley and several parishes between Leeds and the River Wharfe. The Haverah Park experiment was a cosmic ray air shower detection array consisting of water Cherenkov detectors distributed over an area of 12 km2 on Haverah Park on the Pennine moorland near Harrogate, North Yorkshire. The experiment was operated by University of Leeds for 20 years, and was switched off in 1987. Air showers of secondary particles generated from a primary cosmic ray hitting the Earth's atmosphere are spread over many kilometres when they hit the ground. An array allows for detection of secondary particles caused by a single cosmic ray at several detectors. The geographic spread of the detectors allows for calculation of the following: The total number of particles detected can be used to estimate the number of particles in the air shower and from the model of the energy required to generate those particles, the energy of the primary cosmic ray. The difference in the time of arrival of recorded particles at multiple detectors can be used to estimate the arrival direction of the primary cosmic ray.During its operation, many thousands of cosmic ray events were recorded including four exceptional events with energies over 1020 eV. These results were somewhat controversial because they are beyond the GZK limit. Such particles were since observed by other experiments, such as Fly's Eye (Oh-My-God particle) and AGASA.

Swinsty Reservoir is a reservoir in the Washburn valley north of Otley and west of Harrogate in Yorkshire, England. Construction began in 1871 and was completed in 1878. The capacity is about 866 million gallons, with a surface area of 63 hectares. It can be found from the A59 road. The reservoir is below and directly adjoining Fewston Reservoir. The area around the reservoirs is popular with walkers.

Haverah Park is a civil parish in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is located 3 miles (5 km) west of Harrogate. The parish consists of several scattered farms. There is no village in the parish, and there are no public roads. Access is by private roads or by public footpaths. The population is estimated at only 30. The parish shares a grouped parish council with Beckwithshaw. There are several small reservoirs in the parish: Beaver Dyke Reservoirs, Scargill Reservoir and Ten Acre Reservoir. The remains of John O'Gaunt's Castle lie in the far west of the parish.

The Forest of Knaresborough was a royal hunting forest in Yorkshire, England. It covered an area of some 45 square miles (120 km2) west and south of the town of Knaresborough, between the River Nidd and the River Wharfe, then in the West Riding of Yorkshire and now in North Yorkshire.
