Chase-Coletta House, also known as the Lillie Ray Chase House, is a historic home located on the town square of Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1914–1915, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, rectangular, Bungalow / American Craftsman style frame dwelling. It sits on a brick foundation and is sheathed in weatherboard. It features large gable dormers, a sleeping porch, and a hip roofed wraparound porch on brick piers. Also on the property is a contributing shed (c. 1925).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Nu Wray Inn is an historic hotel located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1833 at the time Yancey County was formed and a year before Burnsville was established. It was originally built of logs and had eight bedrooms and a dining room and kitchen. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.Thomas Wolfe spent the night there in 1929 when he was a witness at a murder trial in Burnsville. Elvis Presley and William Sidney Porter (O. Henry) were also guests.It was owned by the same family for a century until the death of Wray family patriarch Rush Wray.Writing about the Inn in 1941 the journalist Jonathan W. Daniels said: Everything is on the table in the Nu-Wray Hotel at Burnsville. Nobody waits to give an order. They bring it in, three or four kinds of meat, all the vegetables of the whole mountain countryside. There are dishes of homemade jellies and preserves. The country ham is excellent. The stout tables do not groan but the stuffed guest rising sometimes does. It is country plenty, country cooked and country served, but in proof that the persisting homesickness for country eating is not entirely based on legend.

Citizens Bank Building, also known as the Yancey County Public Library Building, is a historic bank building located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1925, and is a three-story, yellow brick Renaissance Revival style building. The front facade features fluted Corinthian order pilasters and arched brick openings. The building housed a bank until 1972, when it was donated for use as a county library.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Yancey County Courthouse is a historic courthouse located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. It was built in 1908, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style, stuccoed concrete block building faced in stucco. It has a central pedimented entrance pavilion surmounted by a blocky cupola. It features Corinthian order pilasters and polygonal corner projections. The building housed county offices until 1965, when a new courthouse was constructed.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

The John Wesley McElroy House is a historic house museum in Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. The vernacular Federal-Greek Revival style house, which was built in the 1840s, is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Yancey Collegiate Institute Historic District is a historic school complex and national historic district located at Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina. The district encompasses seven contributing buildings, one contributing structure, and one contributing object built between 1914 and 1955. Contributing resources include the Brown Dormitory for Boys (1914), (Former) Burnsville High School Gymnasium (Parkway Playhouse, 1933, 1947, 1955), an outdoor amphitheater (1950-1952), the Classical Revival style (Second) Administration Building for Yancey Collegiate Institute (1919, 1922), Gymnasium (c. 1946), former Burnsville High School built by the Works Progress Administration (1939) and a stone retaining wall (c. 1950). The Yancey Collegiate Institute (YCI) was established in 1901 and sponsored by the Baptist church. The YCI educated students until 1926, when the facilities were sold to the Yancey County Board of Education.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Parkway Playhouse, located in Burnsville, North Carolina, is the oldest continually operating summer theater in North Carolina. It was established in 1947 by Dr. William Raymond Taylor, a professor of drama at Woman's College on Greensboro, North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. The Parkway Playhouse, for many years, was operated as a summer stock venue and a sponsored extension of the drama departments at UNC-G and the University of Miami. In the 1990s the Parkway Playhouse became an independent theater company, and is now operating as a small professional theater company serving the mountain region of Western North Carolina. It is housed in the (Former) Burnsville High School Gymnasium in the Yancey Collegiate Institute Historic District.

Both YCS public middle schools, East Yancey and Cane River, feed into Mountain Heritage. It is classified by NCHSAA as a 1A institution, meaning its enrollment is in the lowest quartile of North Carolina High Schools, having been reclassified from 2A in 2021.

Celo Knob is the northernmost major peak in the Black Mountains of western North Carolina. It is located just north of Mount Mitchell State Park in the Pisgah National Forest. It is the first peak encountered while hiking the Black Mountain Crest Trail from Bowlens Creek. The trail passes to the southwest of the summit, which can be reached by various herd paths.

Micaville ( MAYH-kuh-vil) is an unincorporated community in the Crabtree Township of Yancey County, North Carolina, United States. The name comes from a mineral mined there called mica. It was the central mining location in the county. Micaville was a main point on the Yancey Railroad (YAN) carrying mica and feldspar, along with fertilizer, building materials, livestock feed and steel spring wire. Due to damage from Hurricane Agnes and flooding from other storms most of the bridges , track and branches were destroyed. Engine number 40 now sits abandoned along 19E in Micaville, across the road from the Silver Bullet convenience store. In the early 1900s, the Black Mountain Railroad, later operating as the Yancey Railroad (YAN) transformed the economy from an agricultural-based into a mining community with later lumber harvesting adding into the economy.

Green Mountain sits along the Toe River, approximately seven miles north of Burnsville, the county seat. It shares a name with the ridgeline north of Burnsville that includes Phillips Knob and Rocky Knob. Its elevation is 2,159 feet (658 m). It has a post office with the ZIP code 28740, which is one of only two ZIP codes used for street addresses in the county.
