Merewether () is a former Municipality and today a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 3 km (2 mi) from Newcastle's central business district with a population of around 11,000. The suburb stretches 3 km (2 mi) from Merewether Beach in the east to Adamstown in the west.

Newcastle High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in Newcastle West, a suburb of Newcastle, in the Hunter region of New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1929, the school enrolled approximately 1,080 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom nine percent identified as Indigenous Australians and nine percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education in accordance with the education curriculum, as determined by the New South Wales Education Standards Authority. Newcastle High School has one of the largest Special Education Unit in the Entire Hunter Region. As of October 2020 the principal is Janene Rosser.

It is the home stadium of Newcastle Jets (A-League Women), the Hunter Wildfires Rugby Union Club (Shute Shield), the Hunter Rugby Union and the Wanderers Rugby Club. It has a current seated capacity of 5,000.

The St John's Anglican Church, formally the Church of St John the Evangelist, also called St John's Cooks Hill, is an Anglican church in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It is the oldest remaining church building in Newcastle, completed in 1860. The building, the design of which is attributed to colonial architect Edmund Blacket, in the Old Colonial Grecian Revival style, is located close to the city centre at 1D Parry Street, Cooks Hill. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

The suburb is primarily a retail/commercial trading district but includes one high school. At the 2016 census Newcastle West had a population of 618.

Hamilton South is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) west of Newcastle's central business district. Hamilton South was part of the Australian Agricultural Company's coal bearing land in inner Newcastle. When mining ceased around 1910 it was decided to create a prestigious estate with an appeal to the higher end of the residential market. The suburb is characterised by late federation style housing. Examples of the design and architecture of the time still remain. The suburb is serviced by Hamilton South Public School, established in 1933 and contains a number of parks and playing fields, including Learmonth Park, Darling Oval and Henry Park.

The Ridge is a heritage-listed residence and former hospital at 21 Hillcrest Road, Merewether, New South Wales, Australia. It was also known as Hillcrest Hospital. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Cooks Hill is an inner city suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It is typified by its tree lined streets, rows of Victorian terrace housing, turn of the century timber cottages and corner pubs. Cooks Hill had a population of 3,621 in 2016.

Miss Porter's House is a heritage-listed former residence and now house museum at 434 King Street, Newcastle West, Newcastle, City of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It was built by John T Owen. The property is owned by the National Trust of Australia (NSW). It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 17 November 2000.
