Clayton Historic District is a national historic district located at Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina. It encompasses 271 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 1 contributing structures in the town of Clayton. It includes notable examples of Late Victorian and Bungalow / American Craftsman style architecture and buildings dating from about 1850 to 1959. It includes commercial, residential, ecclesiastical, and educational structures. Located in the district are the separately listed Clayton Banking Company Building and the Clayton Graded School and Clayton Grammar School-Municipal Auditorium. Other notable buildings include the B.M. Robertson Mule Company stable, Mayo House, the Young House, Horne Memorial United Methodist Church, First Baptist Church of Clayton, and First Missionary Baptist Church.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

Clayton Banking Company Building is a historic bank building located at Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina. It was built in 1919–1920, and is a two-story rectangular brick block faced with Indiana limestone in the Beaux-Arts style. The front facade includes a pair of three-quarter Ionic order columns "in antis" framing the double front doors. The building houses the Clayton Chamber of Commerce. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

The Clayton Center is a performing arts and conference center in Clayton, North Carolina. The center is managed by the Town of Clayton and is located in the same complex as Town Hall at 111 East 2nd Street, Clayton. The venue serves patrons in Johnston County, North Carolina and beyond, drawing heavily from the Triangle area. The building is the former Clayton Elementary School, which closed in 1997. The center was created through a public-private partnership between the Town of Clayton and the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation. Fundraising support for the center is conducted through the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation. The center opened in December 2002. Receptions, trade shows and weddings are held in the center's main lobby adjacent to the glass atrium. Meeting rooms are located on the center's first and second floor. The center's 600-seat auditorium is available for large presentations, film screenings, concerts, pageants and other performing arts. Among its many operations, The Clayton Center presents a Palladian Series each season featuring internationally touring artists.

The Clayton Elementary School and Auditorium are a historic school complex located at Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina. The elementary school was built in 1915, and is a two-story, rectangular brick building on a raised basement with a projecting one-story rear gymnasium. The municipal auditorium was designed by architect Charles C. Hook and built in 1926. It consists of a two-story, gable front auditorium on the front of the building, with a three-story classroom section at the rear. The classroom block contains 18 classrooms. The school closed in 1997.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Ellington-Ellis Farm is a historic home and farm complex located near Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina. The house was built around 1835, and is a two-story, "T"-plan Greek Revival style heavy timber frame dwelling. It is sheathed in weatherboard, is flanked by exterior stone end chimneys, and has a low hip roof. It was remodeled in the 1850s that added a two-room kitchen/dining ell. Also on the property are the contributing smokehouse with a bell tower (1830s), a four-seat ladies' privy (1830s), and a playhouse (1850s).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Stallings-Carpenter House, located on State Road 1713 north of Clayton, Johnston County, North Carolina, was constructed in 1845 by James and Elizabeth (Jones) Stallings in the Greek Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 28 Mar 1983.

Clemmons Educational State Forest (CESF) is a 825-acre (3.34 km2) North Carolina State Forest in Clayton. It is North Carolina's first educational state forest, and it is operated by the North Carolina Forest Service. The site features self-guided nature trails with audio exhibit stations, the Forestry Exhibit Center with interactive exhibits about the ecology of forests, soil, water, wildlife and the state's cultural history. There are 4 main trails with 8 miles of hiking available. The two audio trails ("Talking Trees" trail and the "Talking Rocks" trail) feature recorded messages about the history of the forest and trees as well as geology of North Carolina. The Forest Demonstration trail shows actual forestry practices, while the Watershed Extension loop features streams, hills, and other interesting sites. There are picnic sites as well as a large covered picnic shelter available for the public to use. Another interesting feature is a large 40 feet by 24 feet deck overlooking a 3-acre pond with a large map of North Carolina showing all of the river basins in the state. Children and adults enjoy feeding the fish from the deck also. Forest rangers offer education programs for school groups.

Powhatan is an unincorporated community in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States, centered on the intersection of Powhatan Road and U.S. Route 70 Business, equidistant from the towns of Clayton and Wilson's Mills. It lies at an elevation of 302 feet (92 m).The community is home to a large athletics complex on Powhatan Road, as well as several large chemical/pharmaceutical plants, including the Grifols plant on US 70 Business, and Novo Nordisk on Powhatan Road. Just east of the community is the eastern terminus of the Clayton Bypass (mainline US 70).

The Walnut Hill Historic District is a collection of 40 family dwellings, agricultural outbuildings, and other structures and sites associated with the Walnut Hill Plantation and the Mial-Williamson and Joseph Blake farms near Shotwell, North Carolina. The historic district represents the post-Civil War growth of one of the largest agricultural centers in Wake County. It is situated primarily along the northeast end of Mial Plantation Road (State Road 2509) between its intersections with Major Slade and Smithfield Roads.The Walnut Hill Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2000. The nearby Walnut Hill Cotton Gin and Oaky Grove Plantation have been listed in the National Register separately, in 1986 and 1993, respectively.

Shotwell is an unincorporated community in rural eastern Wake County, North Carolina, United States, located about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Knightdale and 11 miles (18 km) east of Raleigh at the confluence of Smithfield, Mial Plantation, Major Slade, Grasshopper, and Turnipseed Roads. Shotwell has been inhabited since the early 19th century and is home to a number of historic structures. A post office was established in 1883 but closed less than two decades later.Oaky Grove was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.
