Sound, Cheshire

Sound Heath, also known as Sound Common, is an area of common land in Sound, near Nantwich in Cheshire, England, which includes heathland, grassland, scrub, woodland and wetland habitats. The majority of the area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Local Nature Reserve. One of the very few lowland heaths in Cheshire, Sound Heath is a valuable habitat for heathland plants and animals, although its heathland character is currently under threat from the spread of trees and scrub. The common's ponds form one of the most important sites in the county for freshwater invertebrates. Three nationally rare or endangered species have been found within the area: the mud snail (which is now one of the UK's most endangered freshwater creatures, having been recently recategorised as near threatened across Europe in the new IUCN European Red List of Non-marine Molluscs), great raft spider and the Enochrus isotae species of water scavenger beetle, as well as the nationally scarce beautiful snout moth. The first sightings of the migrant hawker dragonfly in Cheshire were at Sound Heath, and many other locally rare species have been recorded here. The site is also an important breeding site for birds.

Broomhall is a civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The main line of the Shropshire Union Canal runs through the parish and the River Weaver forms part of its boundary. The main settlement is the hamlet of Broomhall Green, which lies on the A530 about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south-west of Nantwich. The civil parish has an area of 539 hectares (1,330 acres), and also includes part of the small settlement of Sandford (also in Newhall parish), with a total population of around 200 in 2011. Nearby villages include Aston, Sound, Wrenbury and Audlem. Broomhall appears in the Domesday survey and the name was also historically spelled Bromhall.

Aston (also known as Aston by Wrenbury, Aston in Wrenbury, Aston by Newhall, Aston in Newhall and Aston near Audlem) is a village in the civil parish of Newhall in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The village should not be confused with several other villages named Aston in Cheshire, which include Aston juxta Mondrum, Aston by Budworth and Aston, Vale Royal.

Ravensmoor is a village in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, located at SJ620505. It is split between the civil parishes of Baddiley and Burland and Acton. It lies at an elevation of 65 m, around 2¼ miles south west of Nantwich and 6 miles south west of Crewe. The village centres on the crossroads of Baddiley Lane, Marsh Lane, Swanley Lane and Sound Lane, with a small village green adjacent. Much of the village dates from the second half of the 20th century. The village lies within a fork of the Shropshire Union Canal south of the Hurleston Junction; the Llangollen branch runs ⅔ miles to the west and the main line of the canal runs just over a mile to the east. Ravensmoor Brook runs to the east of the village and Edleston Brook to the south and west.

Baddiley Hall is a country house in the settlement of Baddiley in Cheshire, England. Previously there was a half-timbered house on the site, but this had been replaced by the current house before the death of its owner, Sir Henry Mainwaring, in 1797. It is constructed in brown brick with a tiled roof, and has an L-shaped plan. Its architectural style is Georgian. The house is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building. Figueirdo and Treuherz comment that it is "a modest Georgian brick manor house, hardly more than a farmhouse".

St Michael's Church is in the civil parish of Baddiley, Cheshire, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The church lies at the end of a lane near to Baddiley Hall, formerly the home of the Mainwaring family. It dates from the early 14th century. The nave and chancel are divided by a pre-Reformation screen and tympanum. The church is one of a 'handful' of timber-framed churches remaining in the country. It continues to be an active Anglican parish church in the diocese of Chester, the archdeaconry of Macclesfield and the deanery of Nantwich. Its benefice is combined with those of St Mary's and St Michael's Church, Burleydam and St Margaret's Church, Wrenbury.

Newhall is a village (at SJ609454) and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The village lies 3½ miles to the west of Audlem and 5 miles to the south west of Nantwich. The parish also includes the village of Aston (at SJ610468), and the small settlements of Aston Heath, Barnett Brook, Brown's Bank, Dodd's Green, Grandford, Grindley Green, Hollingreen, Kingswood Green, Maiden Estate, Salesbrook, Sheppenhall and part of Sandford. Nearby villages include Audlem and Wrenbury. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 669, increasing to 776 at the 2011 Census.

Wrenbury railway station serves the village of Wrenbury in Cheshire, England and is on the Welsh Marches Line 9 miles (14 km) south west of Crewe. It is an unstaffed, request-stop station with two platforms.

Baddington is a civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, which lies immediately to the south-west of Nantwich and north of Audlem. Predominantly rural with scattered farms, the civil parish has a total population of around 100 people, increasing to 212 at the 2011 Census, and includes the dispersed settlement of Hack Green, the site of a former RAF decoy station, radar station and Home Defence regional headquarters. Nearby villages include Aston, Broomhall Green, Hankelow, Ravensmoor, Sound Heath and Stapeley.

Salesbrook (sometimes written 'Sales Brook' or archaically 'Sailsbrook'. Occasionally referred to by the Welsh version of the name Nant Acsiynau) is a small settlement in the parish of Newhall, near the village of Aston, in the ceremonial county of Cheshire and the unitary authority of Cheshire East in England. Nearby settlements include Aston by Wrenbury, Newhall, Barnett Brook and Dodd's Green.

Baddiley is a scattered settlement and civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. The civil parish also includes the north-western part of the village of Ravensmoor (also in the parish of Burland), as well as the small settlements of Baddiley Hulse, Batterley Hill, and parts of Gradeley Green and Swanley. According to the 2001 Census the parish had a total population of 226, increasing at the 2011 Census to 249.The largest settlement within the parish, Ravensmoor centres on a crossroads with a small village green. It lies around six miles south west of Crewe.

Edleston is a former civil parish, now in the parishes of Burland and Acton and Nantwich, in the unitary authority area of Cheshire East and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England, which lies immediately to the south west of Nantwich. For administrative purposes, it was combined with adjacent civil parishes of Acton and Henhull to form a total area of 765 hectares (1890 acres). The parish was predominantly rural with scattered farms and houses, with the exception of a new housing estate at the eastern end of the parish east of the canal. Nearby villages include Acton and Ravensmoor. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 53. Since then new building in the parish has increased the population, with over 300 new houses in the east of the parish bringing the population to well over 500. Malbank Waters is a two-phase development of nearly 400 houses in the east of Edleston as an extension to the town of Nantwich. The first phase was completed in January 2019.
