Sherwood Observatory

Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society (MSAS) is an amateur astronomical society in the East Midlands of England. It was formed in 1969. It is based at Sherwood Observatory, a 61 cm mirror telescope which it owns and operates. The observatory lies 4 km south west of the centre of Mansfield on one of the highest points in the county of Nottinghamshire.The society is a member of The Federation of Astronomical Societies.

The Mansfield and Pinxton Railway was an early horse-drawn railway in the United Kingdom. It was completed in 1819, to make a transport link between Mansfield and the Cromford Canal at Pinxton. An important traffic was coal inward to Mansfield, as coal deposits near there were too deep to be extracted economically at the time; minerals, malt and other manufactures were exported from Mansfield. Collieries along the line of route were developed as time went on. From 1847 the Midland Railway developed a railway network in the locality of Mansfield, and purchased the M&PR, converting it to be suitable for locomotive use and incorporating it in its own network. In the second half of the twentieth century, passenger and ordinary goods business in the Mansfield area declined substantially, leaving only a limited coal traffic via Codnor Park from 1970. The passenger service from Nottingham to Mansfield was revived under the marketing title The Robin Hood Line, opening to Mansfield in 1995, using the section of the original M&PR, as modified by the Midland Railway, from Kirkby to Mansfield. The mineral traffic flow from Codnor Park continues.

Sutton Junction railway station was a station in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England. It was opened in 1850, and was located on the Midland Railway's Mansfield Branch Line (Now the Robin Hood Line). It was one of four stations that served the town. The others were Sutton-in-Ashfield Central, Sutton-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield Town. The station was replaced by the modern-day station on the same line and now known as "Sutton Parkway".

Sutton Parkway railway station serves the town of Sutton-in-Ashfield in Nottinghamshire, England. The station is about 1⁄2 mile (800 m) south of the location of the former Sutton Junction station and 14 miles (23 km) north of Nottingham on the Robin Hood Line.

Robin Hood Hills are a steep sided range of sandstone hills forming a natural amphitheatre surrounding the villages of Annesley and Newstead in Nottinghamshire, England. Robin Hood's Cave lies at the bottom of the hills. They rise to a height of 195 metres above sea level at Coxmoor, Kirkby-in-Ashfield. A railway tunnel passes underneath the hills on the Robin Hood Line railway between Newstead railway station and Kirkby-in-Ashfield railway station.

King's Mill Hospital is an acute general district hospital serving the population of north Nottinghamshire and parts of Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. It is managed by the Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The majority of the hospital buildings are inside Ashfield District Council (town planning) area with some peripheral buildings falling under Mansfield District Council planning controls.

Kirkby-in-Ashfield is a market town in the Ashfield District of Nottinghamshire, England. With a population of 25,265 (according to the 2001 National Census), it is a part of the wider Mansfield Urban Area. The Head Offices of Ashfield District Council are located on Urban Road in the town centre.

Mansfield 103.2 FM is an Independent Local Radio station in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, serving the areas of Mansfield and Ashfield in Nottinghamshire and nearby Bolsover in Derbyshire. It was launched in 1999 after winning a licence to broadcast from the Radio Authority in 1998. Based at the Brunts Business Centre, near the centre of Mansfield, it uses a shared transmitter mast sited at Fishpond Hill, on the outskirts of Mansfield near to Skegby.Mansfield 103.2's Managing Director is Tony Delahunty and the Managing Editor is Ian Watkins.The station is Mansfield's only local radio station.

Outwood Academy Kirkby (formerly Kirkby Comprehensive School and then Kirkby College) is a mixed secondary school located in Kirkby-in-Ashfield town centre, Nottinghamshire, England.Previously a foundation school administered by Nottinghamshire County Council, Kirkby College converted to academy status on 1 August 2012. The school continues to coordinate with Nottinghamshire County Council for admissions. In September 2022 Kirby College joined the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, and was renamed Outwood Academy Kirkby.

The 1906 News of the World Match Play was the fourth News of the World Match Play tournament. It was played from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 October at Notts Golf Club. 32 players competed in a straight knock-out competition, with each match contested over 18 holes, except for the final which was over 36 holes. The winner received £100 out of a total prize fund of £240. Sandy Herd defeated Charles Mayo 8 & 7 in the final to win the tournament.
