Mayfield East is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 5 kilometres (3 mi) from Newcastle's central business district. It is part of the City of Newcastle local government area.

The Newcastle Steelworks was built by BHP in Newcastle, New South Wales. Construction commenced in January 1913, with operations commencing in March 1915. It was officially opened on 2 June 1915 by Governor-General Ronald Munro Ferguson. Newcastle was selected due to its proximity to the Hunter Valley coalfields with the iron ore shipped from Whyalla.Having become one of the largest employers in Australia with a workforce that peaked at 11,000 in 1981, it closed on 30 September 1999. Demolition commenced in 2000.In 2022 the Department of Planning & Environment called for expressions of interest to redevelop the site.The 150 ha (370 acres) steelworks had a 45 km (28 mi) rail network. Initially operated by steam locomotives, 32 and 37 class diesel locomotives were later introduced.

Mayfield North is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. It is basically an industrial estate, which extends north to the south arm of the Hunter River, west to Tourle Street, and south to Industrial Drive. Originally the estate comprised CSR Chemicals, Titans, Koppers, and part of the BHP Steelworks (No2 Merchant Mill, Rod Mill, Limestone Kiln and Spares Yard). It has officially has population of zero.

The 2007 New South Wales storms started on 8 June 2007 following the development of an intense east coast low pressure system during the previous night. Over the next 36 hours these areas were battered by the system's strong winds and torrential rain, which caused extensive flooding, damage, loss of life and the grounding of a 225 m (738 ft) long bulk carrier.

The district consisted of the rural areas of Murray County, which had previously been part of Counties of Murray, King and Georgiana, and St Vincent County, which had previously been part of Counties of St Vincent and Auckland. The towns of Braidwood and Queanbeyan were not part of the district, being included in Southern Boroughs.In 1856 the unicameral Legislative Council was abolished and replaced with an elected Legislative Assembly and an appointed Legislative Council. The district was represented by the Legislative Assembly electorate of United Counties of Murray and St Vincent.

The district consisted of the towns of Newcastle, Stockton and Raymond Terrace that had previously been part of Northumberland Boroughs.In 1856 the unicameral Legislative Council was abolished and replaced with an elected Legislative Assembly and an appointed Legislative Council. The district was represented by the Legislative Assembly electorate of North Eastern Boroughs.
