Hales Franciscan High School (known simply as Hales) is a private Catholic high school located in the Bronzeville neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. It is part of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Walter Henri Dyett High School For The Arts (formerly known as Dyett Academic Center and commonly known as Dyett High School) is a public four–year arts high school located in the Washington Park neighborhood on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The school opened in 1972. Dyett is a part of the Chicago Public Schools system and is named for American violinist and music educator Walter Henri Dyett (1901–1969). The school became an arts high school for the 2016–17 school year.

Provident Hospital, now a public hospital, was the first African-American owned and operated hospital in America. Provident was established in Chicago in 1891 by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, an African-American surgeon during the time in American history where few public or private medical facilities were open to black Americans. It was founded to provide health care and medical training. Its initial officers were president John M. Brown, vice president Richard Mason Hancock, treasurer John T. Jenifer, secretary Louis H. Reynolds, and auditor Lloyd D. WheelerOwned and run by African Americans, from its start Provident was open to all regardless of race. It was also "the first private hospital in the State of Illinois to provide internship opportunities for black physicians . . .[t]he first to establish a school of nursing to train black women . . . one of the first black hospitals to provide postgraduate courses and residencies for black physicians and the first black hospital approved by the American College of Surgeons for full graduate training in surgery. Provident also offered an important forum, a proving ground for ideas about black self determination and institutional survival." In 1893, the first documented heart surgery was performed by Dr. Daniel Williams at Provident Hospital and Training School. Though the historic Provident Hospital was forced to close in 1987 due to financial difficulties, it reopened in 1993 as part of Cook County Hospital System. to provide services to residents of Chicago's South Side. It is now known as Provident Hospital of Cook County.Alton Abraham, the social entrepreneur associated with Sun Ra, worked here. First Lady Michelle Obama was born at Provident Hospital in 1964.

The Afro-Arts Theater was a regional theater on Chicago's South Side established in 1967 by Kelan Philip Cohran. The theater was also a meeting place for black power activists and considered central to the growth of African American consciousness in Chicago. On December 28, 1969, Gwendolyn Brooks received at the theater what she considered "the most stirring and significant tribute of her life."

The Sutherland Hotel, originally built to be the Cooper–Monatah Hotel, is a historic building in the Kenwood neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Built as a high-end hotel, the Sutherland was commandeered by the US government as a military hospital before it was completed. Finally opened as a hotel in 1925, the building later became famous for its Sutherland Lounge, a popular venue for Chicago's jazz scene.

Regal Theater was a night club, theater, and music venue, popular among African-Americans. Located in the Bronzeville neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois. The theater was designed by Edward Eichenbaum. and opened in February 1928. Part of the Balaban and Katz chain, the lavishly decorated venue, with plush carpeting and velvet drapes, featured some of the most celebrated African-American entertainers in America. On what for a time was known as the Chitlin' Circuit, the Regal also featured motion pictures and live stage shows. Nat "King" Cole, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lena Horne, Dinah Washington, Miles Davis, Sammy Davis Jr., Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington performed frequently at the theater through the 1920s and 1940s.Other acts to appear at the Regal over the years have included such performers as The Supremes, Wayne Cochran, The Esquires The Temptations, The Four Tops, B.B. King, Herbie Hancock, Della Reese, Stevie Wonder, Les Paul, Gladys Knight & The Pips, International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Dionne Warwick, James Brown & The Famous Flames, The Isley Brothers, John Coltrane, Dorothy Dandridge, Revella Hughes, Five Stairsteps, Peg Leg Bates, Dave Peyton and Martha and the Vandellas. Closed in 1968, the theater was later demolished in 1973.

The Savoy Ballroom in Chicago, United States was opened on Thanksgiving Eve, November 23, 1927, at 4733 South Parkway.

Harold Washington Cultural Center is a performance facility located in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago's South Side. It was named after Chicago's first African-American Mayor Harold Washington and opened in August 2004, ten years after initial groundbreaking. In addition to the 1,000-seat Commonwealth Edison (Com-Ed) Theatre, the center offers a Digital Media Resource Center. Former Chicago City Council Alderman Dorothy Tillman and singer Lou Rawls take credit for championing the center, which cost $19.5 million. It was originally to be named the Lou Rawls Cultural Center, but Alderman Tillman changed the name without telling Rawls. Although it is considered part of the Bronzeville neighborhood it is not part of the Chicago Landmark Black Metropolis-Bronzeville District that is in the Douglas community area. The limestone building, which is located on the same site as a former historic black theatre, the Regal has become the subject of controversy stemming from nepotism. After a construction phase marked by delays and cost overruns, it has had a financially disappointing start and has been underutilized by many standards. These disappointments were chronicled in an award winning investigative report. The center suffered from under use leading to financial management difficulties. After it defaulted on some loans, the Chicago City Council voted in November 2010 to have the City Colleges of Chicago take over the Center and use it for a consolidated Performing Arts program.

The Kenwood Astrophysical Observatory was the personal observatory of George Ellery Hale, constructed by his father, William E. Hale, in 1890 at the family home in the Kenwood section of Chicago. It was here that the spectroheliograph, which Hale had invented while attending MIT, was first put to practical use; and it was here that Hale established the Astrophysical Journal. Kenwood's principal instrument was a twelve-inch refractor, which was used in conjunction with a Rowland grating as part of the spectroheliograph. Hale hired Ferdinand Ellerman as an assistant; years later, the two would work together again at the Mount Wilson Observatory. Hale's work attracted the attention of many in the astronomical community, and when he was hired at the University of Chicago as a professor of astronomy, more advanced astronomy students initially used the Kenwood Observatory. When Yerkes Observatory was established in 1897, the Kenwood instruments were donated to the University of Chicago and moved to the Yerkes facility in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. The 12-inch telescope was one of the instruments besides the large 40-inch aperture refractor for the start of Yerkes observatory in the 1890s. The observatory was also called Kenwood Observatory. The 12-inch refractor is noted as being moved to the north dome of the Yerkes observatory, but was eventually replaced by a 24-inch reflector telescope.The 12 inch refractor was a double telescope with one for visual observation and another objective for astrophotography,

The Robert S. Abbott House is a historic house in the Grand Boulevard community area of Chicago, Illinois. Built about 1900, it was home from 1926 until his death of Robert S. Abbott (1870-1940), founder and publisher of the Chicago Defender, the largest-circulation African-American newspaper in the nation. Abbott started this newspaper in 1905 in which he heartened blacks in southern United States to move into north far from racist south. Abbott became one of the few self-made black millionaires in the early 20th century. His home was designated a National Historic Landmark status in 1976.

The Elam House, originally Simon Marks House, is a chateauesque-style residential building at 4726 South Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The house was designed by Henry L. Newhouse and built in 1903. It was later purchased by Melissia Ann Elam. It was designated a Chicago Landmark on March 21, 1979.

The Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church is a historic church at 4501 S. Vincennes Avenue in the Grand Boulevard community area of Chicago, Illinois. Built in 1899, the building was originally a synagogue for the Isaiah Temple congregation. Architect Dankmar Adler, who partnered with Louis Sullivan to build many of Chicago's early skyscrapers, designed the Neoclassical building; Adler was the son of a rabbi, and he designed several other synagogues in Chicago.African-American settlement changed the demographics of the neighborhood in the early twentieth century, and the Isaiah Temple congregation sold the building to the black Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church congregation in 1921. The first gospel choir was formed in the church in 1931, and its leaders Thomas A. Dorsey, Theodore Frye, and Roberta Martin were responsible for popularizing gospel music in Chicago's black churches. The church's choir helped launch the careers of many prominent gospel musicians, including Mahalia Jackson, Sallie Martin, and Dinah Washington; rock and roll pioneer Bo Diddley also performed in the church's orchestra.The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 24, 2016.
