Montezuma, New York

Seneca River Crossing Canals Historic District is a national historic district located at Montezuma and Tyre in Cayuga and Seneca Counties, New York. The district includes more than a mile of the Enlarged Erie Canal prism (built here between 1849 and 1857); towpath and heelpath; a drydock; the remains of the Richmond (Montezuma) Aqueduct crossing the Seneca River; remnants of the original Erie Canal, built between 1817 and 1825 and including Lock #62 and piers of the original mule bridge from that era; and a culvert that carries a stream beneath the Enlarged Erie Canal. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

Mentz Church is a historic community church located at Montezuma in Cayuga County, New York. It is a rectangular, gable roofed frame structure built between 1820 and 1830 and enlarged during the 1870s-1880s. The front facade features a centrally engaged square tower. Also on the property is the church cemetery with headstones dating from 1813 to the 1940s. The church ceased being used for services in 1954 and is being restored for community use.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Montezuma Marsh is a marsh at the northern end of Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Much of the marsh is part of the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, which is a major point on the route of many migratory birds, such as Canada geese and mallard ducks. The Cayuga valley is an old preglacial valley, which once drained northward into the Ontario Valley. Cayuga Lake and Montezuma Marsh were partially created by the damming effect of huge quantities of glacial drift brought from the Laurentian Shield of Canada and the deepened Ontario valley. (Cayuga Lake was also deepened southward of the area of the marsh.) The valley is completely buried by a drumlin field between the marsh and Lake Ontario. The marsh was a barrier to westward travel in colonial times as roads could not be built across it, with the technology of the time. The first major passageway was the Erie Canal, which was completed in 1825 but the digging of the section that crossed the marsh was one of the most difficult, with great loss of life due to mosquito-borne fevers (possibly malaria). The cut was finally finished by digging it in the winter (also with great suffering, due to frostbite) when mosquitoes were dormant.

Erie Canal Lock 52 Complex is a national historic district located at Port Byron and Mentz in Cayuga County, New York. The district includes two contributing buildings (the Erie House and the blacksmith shop / mule barn); three contributing engineering structures (Erie Canal Lock 52, culvert, and canal prism of the enlarged Erie Canal); and archaeological sites associated with the canal operations. Lock 52 was constructed 1849-1853 as part of the Enlarged Erie Canal program. It remained in operation until the rerouting of the canal under the New York State Barge Canal System in 1917. The Erie House was built in 1894 and is a two-story frame structure that housed a saloon and hotel. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The lock is now the centerpiece of a local historic park, accessible either from local streets, or from a rest area on the eastbound side of the New York State Thruway.

Port Byron is a village in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,290 at the 2010 census. It is in the town of Mentz and is north of Auburn.

Savannah is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in the Town of Savannah, Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 558 at the 2010 census. Savannah was incorporated as a village in 1867, but dissolved in 1979. Government offices for the Town of Savannah are located in the hamlet.

Mentz is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,114 at the 2020 census. The town is in the central part of the county, 7 miles north of Auburn.The town's name has never been determined, but it is locally believed that it derived from Mainz, in Germany.

Hiram Lay Cobblestone Farmhouse, also known as the Cobblestone House at 1145 Old School House Road, is a historic home located at Tyre in Seneca County, New York. It is a 1+1⁄2-story, five-bay, cobblestone farmhouse with Greek Revival style detailing. It has a side-gable roof and one-story rear kitchen wing. The roof is topped by a hip roofed cupola. Also on the property is a contributing brick smokehouse. It is the only cobblestone building in Tyre and one of 18 remaining in Seneca County. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

Aurelius is a town in Cayuga County, New York, United States. The population was 2,610 at the 2020 census. The town was named after the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. It is at the western edge of the county and borders the city of Auburn.

Savannah is a town in the southeast portion of Wayne County, New York, United States. The population was 1,730 at the 2010 census.The town has a hamlet (and census-designated place), also called Savannah. Government offices for the town are located there.
