Marbach am Neckar

The Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach (DLA – German Literature Archive), established in 1955, in Marbach am Neckar, is one of the most significant literary archives in the world. Its collections span literary and intellectual history from 1750 to the present and are open to everyone who is conducting source criticism. The DLA offers nearly 800,000 volumes and over 1,000 journals.

The Museum of Modern Literature (German: Literaturmuseum der Moderne, LiMo) is part of the German Literature Archive (Deutsches Literaturarchiv) in Marbach am Neckar, Germany. The museum won its architect the Stirling Prize in 2007. Designed by British architect David Chipperfield and constructed at a cost of €10 million by Leonard Weiss GmbH, with engineering by Ingenieurgruppe Bauen, the museum opened in September 2006. It stands on a rock plateau in Marbach's scenic park, overlooking the valley of the Neckar River. It displays and archives 20th-century literature. Notable original manuscripts include The Trial by Franz Kafka and Berlin Alexanderplatz by Alfred Döblin.

The Murr (German: [mʊʁ] ) is a river in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Neckar. The river gave its name to a small town on its banks, Murr, and to the Rems-Murr-Kreis district, which was also named after the river Rems, which runs roughly parallel to the south of the Murr. Its source is approx. 4 km south of Murrhardt. It flows northeast before turning west to cross Murrhardt. After a further 7 km, Sulzbach an der Murr is reached. Here, at its northernmost point, the Lauter joins from the north, coming from Spiegelberg. The Murr continues southwest, passing Oppenweiler to reach Backnang, where its narrow valley widens. Further towns on its way are Burgstall an der Murr, Kirchberg an der Murr, Steinheim an der Murr, and the community of Murr itself, which is located in the district of Ludwigsburg. North of Marbach am Neckar, the Murr joins the Neckar after having travelled about 50 km in total. The Murr runs south of the Löwenstein Hills. A large part of the river is situated in the Swabian-Franconian Forest, after which the eponymous nature park was named.

The Steinheim skull is a fossilized skull of a Homo neanderthalensis or Homo heidelbergensis found on 24 July 1933 near Steinheim an der Murr, Germany.It is estimated to be between 250,000 and 350,000 years old. The skull is slightly flattened and has a cranial capacity between 950 and 1280 cc. Sometimes referred to as Homo steinheimensis in older literature, the original fossil is housed in the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, Germany. Some believe that the Steinheim skull may have belonged to an adult female due to its gracile nature.

The Protestant Amandus Church in Freiberg am Neckar, Germany, is a late Gothic fortified former village church. Apart from the collegiate church in Bad Urach it is the only church of that name in Baden-Württemberg. Situated on a hill above the old village centre, it is notable for a diversity of architectural styles and for its paintings and organ.

Steinheim an der Murr is a town in the district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is situated on the river Murr, 9 km northeast of Ludwigsburg. It is known worldwide for the Steinheim skull, the skull of an early human found there in 1933. This human lived around 250,000 years ago. The original skull is kept in the museum of nature in Stuttgart, while in Steinheim, visitors can see two reproductions of the skull in a small museum.
