Loriol-sur-Drôme

The canton of Loriol-sur-Drôme is an administrative division of the Drôme department, southeastern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Loriol-sur-Drôme. It consists of the following communes:

A member of the association Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, it is located 17 km (10.5 mi) north-northeast of Montélimar. In 2021, it had a population of 599.

The Eyrieux (French pronunciation: [eʁjø]) is a tributary of the Rhône in the Ardèche department, France. The Eyrieux runs for 83 kilometres (52 mi). It begins in the Massif Central and joins the Rhône just downstream of Valence. The Eyrieux has at least three distinct landscapes. Above Le Cheylard, the plateau is marked by the sugarloaf cones of old volcanoes, and the land is used mostly for raising cattle and sheep. In its middle section, down to Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut and Les Ollières-sur-Eyrieux, the river is torrential and prone to flash floods and extreme variation. Formerly used for silk mills, it is now used for micro-hydroelectric production, and is a popular spot for canoeing. The river never dries up in summer, as the many dams and barrages maintain a steady flow. The lower section to the Rhône, at Beauchastel and La Voulte-sur-Rhône, opens into the valley and allows intensive farming, especially peach orchards which are best viewed when the trees bloom in the spring.

The Drôme (French pronunciation: [dʁom] ; Occitan: Droma), a river in southeastern France, a left tributary of the Rhône. It is 110.6 km (68.7 mi) long, and has a watershed of 1,663 km². Its source is in the western foothills of the Alps, near the village Valdrôme. It flows into the Rhône near Loriol-sur-Drôme, between Valence and Montélimar. Tributaries of the Drôme include the Bez (or Bès), the Roanne and the Gervanne. La Voulte-sur-Rhône (French pronunciation: [la vult syʁ ʁon], literally La Voulte on Rhône; Occitan: La Vòuta) is a commune in the Ardèche department in southern France.

The late Middle Jurassic lagerstätte at La Voulte-sur-Rhône, in the Ardèche region of southwestern France, offers paleontologists an outstanding view of an undisturbed paleoecosystem that was preserved in fine detail as organisms died at the site and settled to the bottom of a shallow epicontinental sea, with a folded floor that in places exceeded 200 m at this site. The site preserves a marine system of the Lower Callovian stage, a little over 160 mya. The sequence is exposed in a series of quarries at La Boissine, west of the village of La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Iron pyrites in the silty shale are symptoms of an anoxic environment. The site was recognized among French paleontologists from the mid-nineteenth century for its finely detailed fossils.
