Saussignac

Château de Gageac is an ancient monument from the 12th/14th/18th centuries. It is a château located near Gageac-et-Rouillac in the Dordogne department in south-west France. Constructed as a fortress in the 12th century, it was besieged in 1377 during the Hundred Years' War by troops loyal to Charles V of France. Later it was converted to a residence, and it has been in the ownership of the de Vivans family for six generations. A large dovecote facing the castle is a notable feature.

Saussignac (French pronunciation: [sosiɲak]) is a wine appellation (Appellation d'origine contrôlée, AOC) in South West France. The Saussignac AOC is used exclusively for a sweet white dessert wine, similar to Monbazillac but a little drier. The grapes used are generally Sémillon grapes which have been affected by Botrytis cinerea. To qualify for the appellation, the grapes must be grown, and the wine produced, in the four communes of Saussignac, Razac-de-Saussignac, Monestier and Gageac-et-Rouillac. A fundamental difference between Saussignac and all other sweet or late-harvest wines is that chaptalization, or the addition of sugar, is forbidden under the rules of the AOC.

Gageac-et-Rouillac (French pronunciation: [ɡaʒak e ʁujak]; Occitan: Gajac e Rolhàs) is a commune in the Dordogne department in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in southwestern France. A scattered village consisting of many small hamlets. Gageac is now the main village with the Mairie whilst Rouillac has the ancient Carthusian monastery, now a private house and stand on a hill with excellent views across the Dordogne valley. The 15th-16th century Château de Gageac is a listed monument. The commune is part of the Bergerac wine-growing region.
