Solo is a defunct restaurant in Gorinchem, Netherlands. It was a fine dining restaurant that was awarded one Michelin star in 2007 and retained that rating until 2012. On 2 September 2014 it was made known that the restaurant had closed down.The head chef of Solo in the period of the Michelin star was Mohammed el Harouchi. After his accident, sous chef Gerrit van den Berg took over.The restaurant lost its star due to the severe accident of head chef El Harouchi, in which he suffered a contusion of the brain stem. There was no shock or confusion among staff, as everybody expected to lose the star due to the long absence of the head chef.The Dutch-Moroccan background of El Harouchi reflected in his cooking, which was in the basic French style but with Moroccan influences, herbs and tastes.

The Blue Tower (Dutch: Kasteel de Blauwe Toren) was a castle with an imposing stone keep in Gorinchem, the Netherlands. It was a princely residence of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. The complex, which stood there between 1461 and 1578, gained an almost mythical status thanks in part to descriptions by the Gorinchem chronicler Abraham Kemp and the discovery of its foundations in 1983. It was located at the southwestern side of the city center, at the level of the current Tolsteeg, Duivelsgracht, and Buiten de Waterpoort by the Merwede river.

Gorinchem is a railway station in the town of Gorinchem, Netherlands. It is on the MerwedeLingelijn. It was opened on 1 December 1883. Train services are operated by Qbuzz. The original railway building was built to look like Sneek railway station, a building type known in Dutch as "Standaardtype Sneek". The current railway building, designed by Cees Douma, was opened in 1971, and the old building was demolished.

The Linge is a river in the Betuwe that is 99.8 km long, which makes it one of the longest rivers that flow entirely within the Netherlands. The river starts near the village of Doornenburg near the German border. A legend tells us that if pigs no longer forage at the castle of Doornenburg, the river will dry up. The Linge flows to Zoelen, a small village north of Tiel, and from there it meanders west through the Betuwe, to empty in the Boven Merwede near Gorinchem. Until Geldermalsen, the river is little more than a small, canalised stream. From Geldermalsen on, however, it takes the appearance of a real river complete with dikes and small floodplains. The Linge provides idyllic spots at old towns like Asperen and Leerdam as the picturesque city walls are still in place on the banks of the river. The river was once a branch of the river Waal, being cut off at Tiel in 1307 or thereabouts (some traces of this can still be seen). The river is navigable for small vessels and is a popular destination for boaters. The banks of the river are important breeding grounds for waterfowl. This river used to be an important trade route in the olden days. This role has subsequently been taken over by the Rhine and Waal rivers. 't Zand is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Altena, on the southeastern edge of the village of Sleeuwijk. 't Zand is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Sleeuwijk. It consists of about 40 houses. It was first mentioned in 1980 as 't Zand, and means sand.

The Afgedamde Maas (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌɑfxədɑmdə ˈmaːs]; Dammed-up Meuse) is a former distributary of the Maas River (French: Meuse) in the Dutch provinces of North Brabant and Gelderland. The Maas splits near Heusden with one channel flowing north until its confluence with the river Waal (the main distributary of the river Rhine) to form the Merwede, while the other channel (the Bergse Maas) continues west as the main distributary of the Maas.

Dalem is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is located in the municipality of Gorinchem, about 2 km east of the city. It was first mentioned in 1343 as Dalem, and means "low-lying settlement". It should not be confused with the nearby hamlet Laag-Dalem which has become a neighbourhood of Gorinchem. Dalem is a dike village which probably developed around the 11th century along the Boven-Merwede. The Dutch Reformed church is an aisleless church with a doomed roof. An obelisk has been placed on top of the roof. In 2001, it was discovered that the roof had become unstable, and the local congregation could not afford a restoration. In 2004, it was sold to the municipality and restored.Dalem was a separate municipality until 1818, when it was renamed to "Vuren", the name of the other village in the municipality. The village was part of the province of Gelderland until 1986, when the municipality of Vuren ceased to exist, and Dalem became part of Gorinchem, thereby becoming part of the province of South Holland.

The Boven Merwede (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌboːvəˈmɛrʋeːdə], Upper Merwede) is a stretch of river in the Netherlands, mainly fed by the river Rhine. The Afgedamde Maas river joins the Waal at Woudrichem to form the Boven Merwede, which at Hardinxveld-Giessendam splits into the Beneden Merwede river on the right and the Nieuwe Merwede river on the left. Its length is 8.8 km (5.5 mi). The Merwede is part of the main shipping route between Rotterdam and Germany. A road bridge connects the west side of Gorinchem on the north to the west side of Sleeuwijk on the south. There are three passenger ferries.

Hoogblokland is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Molenlanden, and lies about 4 km north of Gorinchem. In 2001, the village of Hoogblokland had 935 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 0.25 km², and contained 372 residences. The statistical area "Hoogblokland", which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 1100.Hoogblokland was a separate municipality until 1986, when it became a part of Giessenlanden.
