Coppull

Coppull railway station is a closed railway station in Coppull, England, situated on Station Road in the centre of the village. Coppull was in the historic county of Lancashire and remains in the county's modern version.

Coppull Mill is a former cotton spinning mill in Coppull, Chorley, Lancashire. It was opened in 1906 by the Coppull Ring Spinning Co, followed by its sister mill, Mavis Mill in 1908. Together they employed 700 workers. The mill was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1941 and passed to Courtaulds in 1964. The building is a Grade II listed building and is now used as an enterprise centre. This was a ring mill. It was driven by a 1600 hp triple-expansion four-cylinder engine by J & E Wood built in 1906. Its 26-foot (7.9 m) flywheel operated at 68 rpm and ran 36 ropes.

Mavis Mill was a cotton spinning mill in Coppull, Chorley, Lancashire Mavis Mill was built in 1908 alongside the Coppull Ring Mill, which still survives under a change of use to an enterprise centre. The mill was taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation in 1941, but was subsequently demolished to make a car park. The spinning machines were driven by a 2000 hp triple-expansion four-cylinder engine by J & E Wood, 1909, which had a 26 ft flywheel with 36 ropes.

Chisnall Hall Colliery was a coal mine in Coppull in Lancashire, England. It was the largest coal mine on the Lancashire Coalfield north of Wigan. The colliery on Coppull Moor was owned by Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Company in 1896 when it employed 135 underground and 48 surface workers. The colliery appeared on maps in 1908 as a coal mine with two shafts and railway sidings connecting its 1.5-mile mineral railway to the London and North Western Railway's West Coast Main Line. In 1930, Pearson & Knowles merged with the Wigan Coal and Iron Company and others and their collieries became the property of the Wigan Coal Corporation. More than 1,000 people were employed there in 1933 and more than 300,000 tonnes of coal were produced annually.

The River Chor is a largely culverted stream in the Lancashire town of Chorley. Its name was back-formed from "Chorley". The source of the river is in the hills near Heapey. Subsequently, the young stream flows through Chorley North Industrial Estate, past B&Q and then underground to enter Astley Park from under Park Road. The river exits at the Southport Road end of the park, flowing behind Chorley Nissan and through Big Wood at the foot of Stansted Road, before connecting into Gillibrand Reservoir. At the end of the reservoir, the river continues for approximately one hundred metres and flows into the River Yarrow.

Yarrow Valley Park is a country park in Lancashire, England. It follows the River Yarrow for about 6 miles. It contains much woodland and includes nature reserves, best known being Birkacre and Duxbury Woods. Parts of the park are reclaimed collieries and other old industrial sites. A visitor's centre is on site, with regular conservation events. Angling is permitted on the two lodges. The park provides recreation for the nearby town of Chorley and its surrounding villages.

Wigan Rural District was an administrative district in Lancashire, England from 1894 to 1974. The rural district comprised an area to the north, but did not include the town of Wigan. The district was created by the Local Government Act 1894 as the successor to the Wigan Rural Sanitary District. It consisted of six civil parishes: Dalton, Haigh, Parbold, Shevington, Worthington and Wrightington. The contiguous parishes of Haigh and Worthington were separated from the rest of the district by Standish with Langtree Urban District.The rural district was abolished by the Local Government Act 1972 in 1974. Its territory was split between the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, and the district of West Lancashire, with the parishes of Haigh, Shevington, and Worthington going to Wigan, and the remainder going to West Lancashire district.

Westhoughton was a parliamentary constituency in Lancashire, England. Centred on the former mining and cotton town of Westhoughton, it returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The constituency was created for the 1885 general election, and abolished for the 1983 general election.

Ellerbeck Colliery was a coal mine located on the border of Coppull and Adlington in the Borough of Chorley in Lancashire, England. The Hilton House and Red Moss Coal Company sank the first shaft in 1876 and the colliery closed in 1928.In 1896 Ellerbeck employed 460 underground workers and 148 on the surface. In 1923 Ellerbeck Nos. 1 & 2 pits had expanded to employ 892 underground workers and 156 on the surface. Ten years later the colliery was owned by the Blackrod Colliery Company and the pit employed 50 underground and 22 surface workers mining the Bone, Wigan Six Feet and New coal seams. The colliery was nationalised in 1947 becoming part of the National Coal Board and was redeveloped employing 411 men in 1958 before finally closing in 1965.The colliery was served by a branch line of the Lancashire Union Railway, remnants of which including the old bridge foundations on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal are evident today. The branch line was shared with neighbouring Duxbury Park Colliery.
