Quincy Quarries Reservation

The Granite Railway was one of the first railroads in the United States, built to carry granite from Quincy, Massachusetts, to a dock on the Neponset River in Milton. From there boats carried the heavy stone to Charlestown for construction of the Bunker Hill Monument. The Granite Railway is popularly termed the first commercial railroad in the United States, as it was the first chartered railway to evolve into a common carrier without an intervening closure. The last active quarry closed in 1963; in 1985, the Metropolitan District Commission purchased 22 acres (8.9 ha), including Granite Railway Quarry, as the Quincy Quarries Reservation.

The John Winthrop Jr. Iron Furnace Site is a historic archaeological site at 61 Crescent Street, Quincy, Massachusetts. The site is called Braintree Furnace in some texts; the West Quincy location at the time of operation was in a part of Braintree, Massachusetts, that later became Quincy. Its importance lies in the fact that it was the first iron blast furnace established in what would become the United States. Furnace Brook, a stream which begins on the eastern slopes of the Blue Hills and meanders for about four miles from southwest to northeast through the middle of Quincy toward Quincy Bay, was named for the works site.The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

The House at 92 Willard Street in Quincy, Massachusetts, is, somewhat oddly, believed to be the only granite house ever built in the city, which is well known for its granite quarries. The house is located in West Quincy, near its famous granite quarries, and was built in the 1830s. It is a 2+1⁄2-story structure, fashioned out of granite blocks, with a gable roof. A single-story hip-roofed porch once wrapped around two sides; it was an early 20th-century addition that has since been removed. The main facade is three bays wide, with the entrance at the center.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

West Quincy is a neighborhood of Quincy, Massachusetts. It is bordered on the north by Wollaston, on the east by Quincy Center, on the south by South Quincy and on the west by the town of Milton and the Blue Hills Reservation.

Lyon's Turning Mill is a historic turning mill that created granite columns on Ricciuti Drive in Quincy, Massachusetts. The first quarry on the site, one of the earliest quarries in Quincy, was established on the site about 1825. In the late 1880s James Lyon bought the quarry and organized the Lyons Granite Company in 1893 with a paid in capital of $40,000. The mill, 200 ft by 90 ft (60m by 27m) was built in 1893-94 and equipped with lathes for turning large granite cylinders and jennies for polishing.The mill's power plant had a 150 hp steam boiler and 100 hp steam engine which ran the shaft, belt and pulley system that drove the plant's machinery. It had a 20-ton traveling derrick and three other derricks with capacities ranging from 5 to 25 tons. It was capable of producing spheres up to 6 ft (1.8m) diameter and cylinders up to 3 ft (1.9m) diameter and 22 ft (7m) long. The mill employed about 80 workers in various trades until 1907, when it closed for unknown reasons. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 25, 1980. It is the proposed home of the recently formed Quincy Quarry & Granite Workers Museum.

WUMB-FM (91.9 FM) in Boston, Massachusetts, is the radio station of the University of Massachusetts Boston. It broadcasts an Americana/Blues/Roots/Folk mix hosted by its staff weekdays. On weekends the station concentrates on traditional folk, Celtic, blues, and world music including syndicated programs. Overnight programming starting at midnight and usually through 5am is a repeat of a portion of the previous day's programming; an announcement of this fact is made at midnight. The station has received many awards for its folk music programming.

The Forbes Hill Standpipe is a historic water tower structure located on Reservoir Road in Quincy, Massachusetts, USA. The tower was built in 1899-1902 to contain a 330,000 US gallons (1,200,000 L; 270,000 imp gal) steel water tank. The site originally included an adjacent reservoir that supplied Quincy with water from the Metropolitan Boston Water System. The standpipe was taken out of service in 1955 and the reservoir was filled in.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

The Milton Main Post Office is a historic post office building at 499 Adams Street in Milton, Massachusetts. The single-story granite building was built in 1936 out of locally quarried stone. The building is roofed in copper and has a wooden tower with louvered side panels and copper roofing. The interior public lobby has terrazzo marble flooring, and white marble wainscoting, with the walls above finished in plaster. The ceiling is ringed by an ornamental plaster cornice. One wall is decorated by a mural depicting scenes of the American Revolution painted by Elizabeth Tracy and funded by the Treasury Section of Painting and Sculpture, a Depression-era jobs program.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

The South~West Middle School, formerly the South Junior High School and Reay E. Sterling Middle School, is a state of the art school building at 444 Granite Street in Quincy, Massachusetts. It is part of the Quincy Public Schools. The original school was in a Classical Revival style building was designed by Shephard & Stearns, and built in 1927. Of three junior high schools built by the city in the 1920s, it is the best preserved. It is a large U-shaped two-story brick building, with a flat roof and a raised basement. Its main facade is symmetrical, with slightly projecting end pavilions and a central entry pavilion.The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Solomon Nightengale House (or "Nightingale") was a historic house at 429 Granite Street in Quincy, Massachusetts. The 1+1⁄2-story Cape style house was built c. 1820 by Solomon Nightengale, whose family had owned the land since the 18th century. It had a four-bay facade, with a central chimney and a sheltered entry in the center-left bay. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.The house shown in the image is at the correct address (429 Granite Street) and lot, as verified by reference to the site map provided on the Massachusetts Historical Commission report precedent to its nomination to the National Register. Since it bears little resemblance to the house shown in the Quincy Historical and Architectural Survey, it appears that the 1820 house has been torn down and replaced by the house shown and its identical twin to the left.

The House at 23–25 Prout Street in Quincy, Massachusetts, is a well-preserved local example of worker housing for people employed in the local granite industry. A fine example of a "Quincy Cottage", it is a 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame structure with clapboard siding and a side-gable roof. It has a projecting gabled entrance vestibule, and twin shed-roof wall dormers, both of which are detailed with decorative wooden shingles. The front roof eave has Italianate brackets. This house was built by Barnabas Clark, a major investor in the granite quarries, to house workers.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Barnes House is a historic house at 183 Pine Street, Quincy, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story house was built in the 1870s, and is a fine local example of Italianate styling. It is three bays wide, with the first floor left bays taken up by a large projecting bay with four sash windows and a bracketed eave. The windows on the second floor have bracketed cornices, and the front entry is sheltered by a decorated porch with turned posts. The house is further distinctive because it has a surviving period barn/carriage house. The builder was probably Howard C. Barnes, who was in the musical instruments business.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
