Fulfordgate

Fulford School is a coeducational comprehensive school on Fulfordgate near Heslington Lane in Fulford, York, England.

Fulford is a historic village and civil parish on the outskirts of York, in the York district, in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. Fulford is located 2 miles (3 km) to the south of the city, on the east bank of the River Ouse. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 2,785. It is home to Imphal Barracks, headquarters of the British Army's 15th Infantry Brigade; soldiers and their families live in married quarters outside the barracks. Fulford is a headquarters for the Royal Military Police. Fulford was the site of the Battle of Fulford won by the invading Vikings in 1066, a precursor to the nearby Battle of Stamford Bridge lost by the Vikings, and then the Battle of Hastings in Sussex won by the invading Normans in the following weeks.

The Battle of Fulford was fought on the outskirts of the village of Fulford just south of York in England, on 20 September 1066, when King Harald III of Norway, also known as Harald Hardrada ("harðráði" in Old Norse, meaning "hard ruler"), a claimant to the English throne and Tostig Godwinson, his English ally, fought and defeated the Northern Earls Edwin and Morcar.Hardrada's army consisted of allies from Orkney and a contingent with Tostig, as well as those coming from Norway. They crossed the sea in a fleet of ships and made their base east of York at Ricall. On 20 September 1066 the Vikings advanced towards York. The largely inexperienced Saxon army led by Morcar at York and Edwin at Tadcaster moved to block the invaders. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle says that the opposing armies met on the left bank of the River Ouse and that initially the Saxons caused heavy losses on the Viking army. However ultimately the Norse army overwhelmed the Saxon army although the earls survived. After winning the victorious Norwegians entered York and gathered supplies and asked for hostages.

Fulford Golf Club is a private golf club located approximately 1 mile (2 km) south of York, England. It was founded in 1906, moving to its current site, which had been approved by James Braid, in 1935. The golf course was designed by Charles MacKenzie, brother of notable golf course architect Alister MacKenzie. Fulford was home to several PGA European Tour events including the Benson and Hedges International Open between 1971 and 1989. Memorably, during the 1981 tournament, Bernhard Langer climbed the tree by the 17th green to play his third shot. The club also hosted the Martini International in 1967, the Sun Alliance European Matchplay Championship in 1979 and the Murphy's Cup in 1990 and 1991. In 1976 Fulford hosted the inaugural Women's British Open, won by Jenny Lee Smith. In recent years, Fulford has hosted a number of international amateur events including the European Ladies' Amateur Team Championship in 2013, The inaugural R&A British Girls' U16 Amateur Championship in 2018 and again in 2019, the Carris Trophy in 2018, and the Girls Amateur Championship in 2021.

York Cemetery is a cemetery located in the city of York, England. Founded in 1837, it now encompasses 24 acres (97,000 m2) and is owned and administered by The York Cemetery Trust with support of the Friends of York Cemetery. It is situated on Cemetery Road in the Fishergate area of York. It has approximately 28,000 graves and over 17,000 monuments, six of which are Grade II-listed. The chapel is a Grade II* listed building, while the gatehouse, gate and railings are Grade II. The cemetery as a whole is a Grade II* listed park and garden. The architect of the buildings and designer of the grounds was James Pigott Pritchett.

Lamel Hill is a scheduled monument about 1 mile (1.6 km) south-east of the centre of York, England. It is on the grounds of The Retreat and the northern part of Walmgate Stray, and in some medieval documents it is referred to as Siward's Mill Hill, or Siward's How Mill, in reference to its previous use as the base of a windmill. However it should not be confused with another site known as Siward's Howe which is about 220 yards (200 m) further east. The hill isn't visible in the picture as it lies inside the wall on the left. Lamel Hill is best known for having been the location of a Parliamentary gun-emplacement aimed at Walmgate Bar in the City Walls during the Siege of York in 1644. It was the site of York's first formal archaeological excavation in 1849, when traces of an Anglo-Saxon cemetery were found. Lamel Hill is part of a conservation area which was designated in 1975.

The Retreat, commonly known as the York Retreat, is a place in England for the treatment of people with mental health needs. Located in Lamel Hill in York, it operates as a not for profit charitable organisation. Opened in 1796, it is famous for having pioneered the so-called "moral treatment" that became a behaviour model for asylums around the world with mental health issues. Founded by William Tuke, it was originally only for Quakers but gradually became open to everyone. It inspired other progressive facilities such as the US Brattleboro Retreat, Hartford Retreat and Friends Hospital. The present day The Retreat seeks to retain the essence of early "moral treatment", while applying the principles to a modern healthcare setting. The Retreat withdrew from the delivery of inpatient services after 222 years on 31 December 2018.

York Student Television (abbreviated YSTV) is England's oldest student television station. Founded in 1967, the station is based at the University of York, with its studio in James College. YSTV once held the world record for longest continuous television broadcast under a single director, and is a long-standing member of the National Student Television Association (NaSTA). YSTV creates and produces a wide range of shows, both independently and in collaboration with other university societies. Recent shows include Tea Time Chat, a weekly magazine and politics show; YorKitchen, a cookery series; YSTV Sessions, an acoustic music show; various live coverage of on and off-campus events including extensive broadcasting of Roses 2017, and irregular reports on local events under the umbrella of YSTV Reports.

James College is a college at the University of York in the United Kingdom. It is known as the "Sports College" largely due to its prowess on the Sports field but also has a diversity of events that cater to all tastes. The college crest incorporates a swan with a White Rose of York.
