Fort Dupont Park

The John Philip Sousa Middle School, formerly the John Philip Sousa Junior High School, is a public school located at 3650 Ely Place in SE area of Washington, D.C. Located in the city's Fort Dupont neighborhood, it serves grades 6–8. Its school building, built in 1950, was the scene of civil rights action not long after its construction. Twelve black students were denied admission to the all-white school. This action was eventually overturned in the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Bolling v. Sharpe, which made segregated public schools illegal in the District of Columbia. The defeat of the legal doctrine "separate but equal" marked an early victory in the modern Civil Rights Movement. The school was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2001 for its role in this action. In 2022 it was designated an affiliated area of Brown v. Board of Education National Historical Park.

Penn Branch is a neighborhood in Southeast Washington, D.C., east of the Anacostia River. It is bounded by Pennsylvania Avenue SE to the south; Pope Branch Park and Pope Creek to the north; Branch Avenue to the west; and Fort Davis Park to the east. ‘Penn Branch’, takes its name from its location at the intersection of two major thoroughfares, Pennsylvania and Branch Avenue (the Washington continuation of Maryland Route 5). Penn Branch and neighboring Hillcrest, Fort Dupont and Dupont Park are conveniently located close to the rapidly developing Capitol Hill and is about 15 minutes from the U.S. Capitol. The area is convenient to the Southeast-Southwest Freeway, and is also popular for its treelined streets, American Craftsman bungalow, Federal , Mid-Atlantic Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival homes. The area has an altitude higher than most of Washington.

Fort Dupont is a residential neighborhood located in southeast Washington, D.C., east of the Anacostia River. It is bounded by East Capitol Street to the north, Fort Dupont Park to the south, Minnesota Avenue to the west, and Fort Chaplin Park to the east and northeast. Fort Dupont has a population of approximately 7,050.Fort Dupont is adjacent to Fort Dupont Park, the grounds of a Civil War-era fort that was constructed for the defense of Washington. Fort Dupont is a distinct neighborhood from the nearby Dupont Park, although both border the park and take their name from it.

Benning Ridge is a residential neighborhood located in Southeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by Fort Chaplin Park to the northwest, Southern Avenue to the south, Benning Road to the east, and Ridge Road SE to the west. Benning Ridge is an unusual neighborhood for its location east of the Anacostia River: although it is surrounded by working-class and low-income African American neighborhoods, Benning Ridge is rather affluent, with a diverse population of middle- and upper-middle-class white and black residents. As of 2015 the neighbourhood was one of the top ten most liberal neighbourhoods in Washington D.C..

Francis A. Gregory Neighborhood Library is part of the District of Columbia Public Library (DCPL) System. It was originally opened to the public in 1961. A new building on the same site, designed by award-winning architect David Adjaye opened on June 19, 2012.

Benning Terrace is a public housing project of 274 apartments and townhouses in southeast Washington, D.C. located east of the Anacostia River in the Benning Ridge neighborhood. It is known to the natives as "Simple City."

It is bounded by Fort Dupont Park to the north, Pennsylvania Avenue SE to the south, Branch Avenue to the west, and Fort Davis Park to the east. The neighborhood civic association uses Fairlawn Avenue and the Anacostia Freeway as the western boundary of the neighborhood.Dupont Park is nestled into the parkland of Fort Davis and Fort Dupont Parks, the grounds of two Civil War-era forts that were constructed for the defense of Washington. The year-round Fort Dupont Ice Arena used for ice-skating and hockey is also located in this area. Dupont Park is a distinct neighborhood from the nearby Fort Dupont, although both border the park and take their name from it. Neither should Dupont Park be confused with Dupont Circle, a more commercial neighborhood in the Northwest quadrant.

Woodlawn Cemetery is a historic cemetery in the Benning Ridge neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the United States. The 22.5-acre (91,000 m2) cemetery contains approximately 36,000 burials, nearly all of them African Americans. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 1996.

Clarence W. Blount (April 20, 1921 – April 12, 2003) was an American politician who was the first African American to be the majority leader of the Maryland State Senate. He represented the 41st district in Baltimore City from January 11, 1971 to January 8, 2003.

Benning Heights is a residential neighborhood located in northeast Washington, D.C. It is bounded by East Capitol Street to the south, Brooks Street NE to the north, 44th Street NE and Benning Road NE to the west, and Division Avenue NE to the east. It is served by the Benning Road Metro Rail station on the Blue Line and Silver Line of the Washington Metro (Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority/WMATA). Politically, Benning Heights is in Ward 7.
