Arna, Norway

Indre Arna is a suburban village in the borough of Arna in the municipality of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. While Indre Arna is relatively far from most of the city centre by road, there is an 8-minute train journey through the mountain Ulriken from Indre Arna to the city centre. Arna Church is located in the village. The 3.96-square-kilometre (980-acre) village has a population (2012) of 6,536 and a population density of 1,651 inhabitants per square kilometre (4,280/sq mi). Since 2013, Statistics Norway no longer tracked separate population statistics for Indre Arna, instead the village was incorporated into a larger urban area called Arna.

Arna is a former municipality in the old Hordaland county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1964 until 1972. It encompassed the northeastern part of the Bergen Peninsula, along the Sørfjorden, bordering the city of Bergen across the mountains to the west. The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Indre Arna. The municipality stretched from the village of Ytre Arna to Trengereid along the coast and then inland about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) to the Espeland area. Today, the area of the former municipality makes up the borough of Arna in the city of Bergen.

Arna Church (Norwegian: Arna kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Bergen Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located in the village of Indre Arna. It is one of two churches in the Arna parish which is part of the Åsane prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, stone church was built in a long church design in 1864 using plans drawn up by the architect Frederik Hannibal Stockfleth. The church seats about 280 people.

Arna Station (Norwegian: Arna stasjon) is the second largest train station in Bergen, Norway; located in the Arna borough on the east side of Ulriken and between the two tunnels Ulriken Tunnel and Arnanipa. The present station was opened in 1964, when the tunnels were completed. The old station, located north of the new station, is still in use for heritage trains on Gamle Vossebanen. All passenger trains on the Bergen Line stop at Arna. The most frequent trains are shuttle trains which run between the Bergen Railway Station and Arna, providing the fastest connection between downtown Bergen and Arna. These normally operate each half-hour, or hourly in weekends and evenings.

Espeland is a village in the borough of Arna in the municipality of Bergen in Vestland county, Norway. Espeland is located north of Lake Haukeland (Norwegian: Haukelandsvatnet) and Mount Livarden. The village of Indre Arna lies about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to the north. The 2.19-square-kilometre (540-acre) village has a population (2012) of 2,182 and a population density of 996 inhabitants per square kilometre (2,580/sq mi). Starting in 2013, Espeland has been included in the urban area of Arna and separate population statistics are no longer tracked.Espeland was the site of the Espeland concentration camp (Norwegian: Espeland fangeleir) built under the direction of German occupation forces between 1942 and 1943.

It is located in the village of Hausvik on the western shore of the island of Osterøy. It is the church for the Haus parish which is part of the Åsane prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in a long church design in 1874 using plans drawn up by the architect Ole Vangberg. The church seats about 460 people.

The 0.37-square-kilometre (91-acre) village has a population (2019) of 601 and a population density of 1,624 inhabitants per square kilometre (4,210/sq mi). The Osterøy Bridge is located about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) south of Hausvik, connecting Osterøy island to the mainland of Bergen. Before the opening of the bridge in 1997, there was a regular ferry route from Hausvik to Garnes. The ferry route was discontinued after the bridge opened.Haus Church is located in the village, serving the southwestern part of Osterøy. The village of Haus was the administrative centre of the old municipality of Haus that existed from 1838 until 1964.

Espeland detention camp (Norwegian: Espeland fangeleir, German: Polizeihäftlingslager Espeland) was an internment camp opened in 1943 by Nazi Germany in occupied Norway next to the village of Espeland in the borough of Arna, Bergen.Built to house prisoners after the closure of the nearby Ulven detention camp, Espeland was soon being used to mitigate overcrowding in Bergen. It functioned as a transit camp, sending many inmates further to Grini detention camp and to camps in mainland Europe. Abuse was common and the total number of people killed during captivity is unknown.Following the surrender of the Nazi regime the previous day, the camp was liberated on 9 May 1945. It was subsequently used by the Norwegians to house post-war prisoners. Since 2000, there has been an effort to convert the camp into an education and archive centre. It is currently run by the Stiftelsen Espeland fangeleir (Espeland Prison Camp Foundation), which, as of 2021, was in the process of being merged with the Norwegian Gestapo Museum.It is among the most well-preserved Nazi concentration camps in the world and in November 2014 the facility was declared a protected monument.
