Donner Lake

Donner Memorial State Park is a state park of California, US, preserving the site of the Donner Camp, where members of the ill-fated Donner Party were trapped by weather during the winter of 1846–1847. Caught without shelter or adequate supplies, members of the group resorted to cannibalism to survive. The Sierra Nevada site has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The state park contains the Emigrant Trail Museum and the Pioneer Monument dedicated to the travelers of the Emigrant Trail. Donner Memorial State Park is located outside Truckee, California. It has 2.5 miles (4.0 km) of hiking trails, campgrounds, and 3 miles (4.8 km) of lake frontage on Donner Lake, east of Donner Pass. The 3,293-acre (1,333 ha) park was established in 1928.

Tahoe Donner is a large home owners association located in the Sierra Nevada, off of Highway I-80, in Truckee, California, which offers a ski resort, golf course, and other amenities. Tahoe Donner is one of America's largest homeowner's associations, with 6,473 properties, more than 23,000 members, and more than 7,000 acres in the Sierra Nevada mountains. In 2017, USA Today voting panelists ranked Tahoe Donner "Number two for Best Cross Country Ski Resort in the U.S. and Canada." In addition to the ski resort, Tahoe Donner amenities (some semi-private) include a private beach club and marina on Donner Lake, the Alder Creek Adventure Center (which includes a ski center, cafe, bar, bike shop, an equestrian center with horseback riding trails), a golf course, walking trails in the Euer Valley, the Trout Creek Recreation Center, and the Club House. In the winter, Tahoe Donner offers alpine and cross-country skiing, snow play. The ski area usually opens 24–36 hours after receiving two to three feet of snow. The downhill ski area includes two chairlifts, three surface lifts, and more than a dozen trails. During the summer, the association offers activities such as golf, swimming, tennis, and hiking.

Tahoe Donner Downhill is a small ski resort with five ski lifts and 14+ trails, in Truckee, California 4.5 mi (7.2 km) northeast of Donner Pass. There are five chairlifts, three conveyor lifts, and 14 trails.

Tunnel Number 41, or the Big Hole, is a single-track railway tunnel underneath Mount Judah in the Sierra Nevada, near Norden, California. It is owned by the Union Pacific Railroad, in service as a part of the Roseville Subdivision of the Overland Route. Daily freight trains as well as Amtrak's California Zephyr utilize the line. Built by Southern Pacific to bypass the curves over Donner Pass along the First transcontinental railroad, it opened to traffic in 1925 as the third-longest rail tunnel in the United States at 10,325 feet (2 mi; 3,147 m) in length. The new tunnel and cutoff shortened the route by 1.29 miles (2.08 km) and was 132 feet (40 m) lower in elevation than the previous bore through the summit, Tunnel No. 6. The new and old single track routes were used in tandem as a double-tracked route until the old route was mothballed in 1993. The line is capable of transporting double-stacked containers.

Donner Pass is a 7,056-foot-high (2,151 m) mountain pass in the northern Sierra Nevada, above Donner Lake and Donner Memorial State Park about 9 miles (14 km) west of Truckee, California. Like the Sierra Nevada themselves, the pass has a steep approach from the east and a gradual approach from the west. The pass has been used by the California Trail, First transcontinental railroad, Overland Route, Lincoln Highway and Victory Highway (both later U.S. Route 40 and still later Donner Pass Road), as well as indirectly by Interstate 80. The pass gets its name from the ill-fated Donner Party who overwintered there in 1846. Today the area is home to a thriving recreational community with several alpine lakes and ski resorts (Donner Ski Ranch, Boreal, and Sugar Bowl). The permanent communities in the area include Kingvale and Soda Springs, as well as the larger community below the pass surrounding Donner Lake.

As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 16,180, reflecting an increase of 2,316 from the 13,864 counted in the 2000 Census and having the 316th highest population in California and 2114th in the United States.

Donner Creek is a stream in Nevada County, California, that flows into and out of Donner Lake. It is a tributary to the Truckee River.
