Acushnet Center, Massachusetts

Acushnet ( ) is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 10,559 at the 2020 census.Acushnet is a part of the South Coast region of Massachusetts which encompasses the cities and towns that surround Buzzards Bay (excluding the Elizabeth Islands, Bourne and Falmouth), Mount Hope Bay and the Sakonnet River.

The Acushnet River is the largest river, 8.6 miles (13.8 km) long, flowing into Buzzards Bay in southeastern Massachusetts, in the United States. The name "Acushnet" comes from the Wampanoag or Algonquian word, "Cushnea", meaning "as far as the waters", a word that was used by the original owners of the land in describing the extent of the parcel they intended to sell to the English settlers from the nearby Plimouth colony. Quite naturally, the English mistook "Cushnea" for a fixed placename or the name of a specific river.

The Head of the River Historic District is a historic district encompassing a village area at the head of navigation of the Acushnet River, which separates Acushnet and New Bedford, Massachusetts. The village is centered at the junction of Tarkin Hill Road, River Road, and Mill Road in New Bedford, and Main Street in Acushnet. The area went through two significant periods of development: the first was in the late 18th and early 19th century, and the second was in the early 20th century. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

The Manomet Mills are a historic textile mill complex on the north side of New Bedford, Massachusetts. They are located between Riverside Avenue and the Acushnet River, north of Manoment Street and the Whitman Mills. The complex consists of three Classical Revival brick buildings, built between 1903 and 1907. The main building, Mill No. 1, is a 54-bay, three-story structure that was built in 1903. It is attached to Mill No. 2 (1907), of similar size, by a single-story brick structure. The third building is the Mill No. 2 Department Room (1907), a two-story brick building that was originally connected to the other two via overhead bridges, now removed. The mill complex was the main operating site of the Manoment Mill Company, which produced cotton yarn until about 1928. The buildings were sold in that year to the Delaware Rayon Company, which went bankrupt in 1954. Mill No. 2 was then used by the Acushnet Process Company for the manufacture of golf balls, while Mill No. 1 continued to be used for rayon production, a chemically intensive and environmentally hazardous process.Mills Nos. 1 and 2 were occupied by the Cliftex Corporation. In 2012, projects to redevelop the mills into residences began, with the third redevelopment project finishing in 2022. The mill complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, also in 2012.

The Whitman Mills are a historic mill complex on the banks of the Acushnet River north of central New Bedford, Massachusetts. The mill yard is bounded by Riverside Street, Manomnet Street, Coffin Street, and the river. It is just one of a group of mill complexes developed by William Whitman in the area around the turn of the 20th century. This particular grouping, including two large mills, an office, and several outbuildings, was built between 1896 and 1917, with most of those original buildings still standing. The mills operated until 1932, when the Whitman Company went bankrupt. The complex was nearly demolished in the 1950s, but has since been subdivided and occupied by a succession of smaller businesses.Renovations at the historic Victoria Riverside mill are now complete and tenants began occupying units in the winter of 2011. Because of the 18’ ceilings, the architect has created a unique design with living space on two floors within the unit with a balcony on the second floor overlooking open space on the first floor. Traditional loft units are also available with living space on one floor. Of the 101 units, traditional loft units are also available with living space on one floor. New Bedford has teamed with Community Rowing of Boston to bring rowing to the Acushnet River. The plan is to create a top level rowing course on the river with amenities such as a boathouse, launch deck and observation areas. Victoria Riverside will overlook the course. The mill complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.

The Oxford School is a historic school building at 347 Main Street in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. Built in 1896 and enlarged in 1921, it was the town's first large elementary school, built for an part of the community which grew rapidly due to its proximity to the mills of New Bedford. The building, a good example of period neo-Classical architecture, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023. It has been converted to residential use.

Riverside Cemetery is a cemetery located in Fairhaven, Massachusetts at 274 Main Street. Laid out in the rural style, it was established in 1850 by Warren Delano II, the grandfather of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School (commonly referred to as GNB Voc-Tech, Voc-Tech, or Voc) is a vocational high school located in New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States for students in grades 9–12. The school draws its student body from the towns and cities of New Bedford, Dartmouth, and Fairhaven. It is considered its own school district, thus having an on-site superintendent as well as an academics principal and a vocational-technical principal. Students alternate between six day long career technical and academic cycles. Students at GNB Voc-Tech experience an education which blends academic instruction with career and technical education. They can choose from more than two dozen career majors. In a typical class, 60-70% of its graduates choose to continue their education, either at colleges or advanced technical schools. Another 30-35% enter the workforce and approximately 2% enter the armed services.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish is a Roman Catholic parish designated for Polish immigrants in New Bedford, Massachusetts, United States. Founded in 1905, Our Lady of Perptual Help is one of the Polish-American Roman Catholic parishes in New England in the Diocese of Fall River. Since the 1930s, the parish has been staffed by the Conventual Franciscans. Parish has been closed on Jan 20, 2022.

The Hotel Waverly is a historic hotel at 1162-1166 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The 3+1⁄2-story hotel was designed by locally prominent architect Samuel C. Hunt and built in 1901. The Queen Anne structure was originally designed to house four residential units on the upper floors, and retail space on the ground floor. In 1911 it was repurposed into the Hotel Waverly, with the second floor converted to a cabaret space. It was renamed the Hotel Touraine in 1922, operating as such until the mid-1970s.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. Completely renovated in 2000, it is now home to low income housing, and known as Talbot Apartments.

WBSM (1420 AM) is a radio station broadcasting in the New Bedford–Fall River market area with a news/talk/sports format. WBSM is under ownership of Townsquare Media, with studios in Fairhaven shared with WFHN.
