Medavakkam is a southern suburb of Chennai in Tambaram taluk of Chengalpattu district, which is adjacent to the neighbourhood of Sholinganallur, Madipakkam, Selaiyur, Keelkattalai, Velachery and Tambaram and it is center place to the developing suburbs like Ponmar, Ottiyambakkam and Sithalapakkam. Medavakkam is administered by Village Panchayat, which comes under the Shollinganallur MLA Constituency and South Chennai MP Constituency. This location is a fast developing residential locality due to its close proximity to the IT corridor OMR (approx 4 km from Sholinganallur) and SEZ in Medavakkam Sholinganallur Road.According to a 2012 report by global property consultant Knight Frank, the neighbourhood has emerged as India's 6th largest destination for investment in the residential real estate, in the list of 13-top residential destinations in the country from an investment point of view, where housing prices are expected to increase by 103 percent over the period 2012–2017.

Sholinganallur metro station is an upcoming elevated-interchange metro station on the Red Line and Purple Line of Chennai Metro in Chennai, India. This metro station will be among the 19 elevated stations of Corridor III and 39 elevated stations of Corridor V of the Chennai Metro. This station is slated to be operational by 2026, making it a key metro rail hub of South Chennai.

Pallikaranai is a neighborhood and a residential area in south Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Madambakkam Lake, or Madambakkam aeri, is a rain-fed reservoir in Madambakkam, Chennai, India, that is filled only during the monsoon seasons. The lake covers an area of 250 acres.

Nanmangalam Reserve Forest is a protected forest located in Chengalpattu district, about 24 km from the city centre. It is located at Medavakkam on Velachery High Road between Velachery and Tambaram. The reserve forest has an area of 320 hectares. However, the total area of the forest is 2,400 hectares.

The Lok Sabha constituency Chennai South is one of three constituencies in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Its Tamil Nadu Parliamentary Constituency number is 3 of 39. It was formerly known as Madras South. It was created in 1957 through bifurcation of Madras Lok Sabha constituency. It is one of the most populous parliamentary constituencies in South India. C. N. Annadurai, the first non-Congress chief minister of Tamil Nadu resigned his seat in 1967 after he was nominated for chief ministership. It was later contested and won by Murasoli Maran.
